Given that Mastodon now has an ex Twitter founder board member and Bluesky does not.
Are we being consequential and move over to Bluesky or was that reason against Bluesky and ATP just a petty argument because of "not invented here" syndrome?
Both are open source solutions and from a technical perspective I think ATproto is the much better designed system for a decentralized social network.
Self hosting for yourself is actually viable on ATproto without being a hobby SysAdmin.

We've got this cheap egg cooker that plays the loudest, most terrifying alarm you've ever heard when it's done cooking. My wife requested that I make it "less aggressive" so I hacked it into the most gentle egg cooker of ALL TIME

(warning: probably loud)

Before shot: egg cooker finishing an egg before modification. Jarring alarm goes off, I say "fuck!" After shot: egg cooker finishes. A few moments later, a small mechanical music box next to the cooker starts playing Pachelbel's Canon

@MLE_online feels like they just repurposed hardware from some old early digital alarm clocks lol
Good sound to wake you up, bad sound to tell you about your egg being ready.

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@naught101 @MLE_online good at waking you up and "good to wake up to" are two entirely different things

A CD with software manufactured in 2022 wow...

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

wtf, the CD version installs a desktop client for Instagram?!
The seemingly identical internet download of the software does not lol

@ErinRose I think whoever created that CD just messed up lol

Arguably the receiver doesn't quite fit but I do still like the look of it being integrated into the furniture and it not taking up the top space.

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@claudius not that much, the back is open and there is still about 2cm open space above it

learning that the platformio folks are a bit... well, you can read for yourself: https://github.com/platformio/platform-raspberrypi/pull/36#issuecomment-1501724359

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark @gsuberland @jacqueline I'd be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt if its the first time being weird but they have a quite a history there. I have very little sympathy at this point.
The projects claim of being a benefit for the open source community is quite something when their messy Arduino implementation has been a massive strain on library and core developers.

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark @gsuberland @jacqueline Espressif dropped them recently as an officially supported tool for similar reasons.
Having platformio support brought onto yourself is a sure way of getting your bug reports doubled with issues entirely specific to platformio but people still come to you first instead of platformios bug trackers. I have sympathy with any vendor not being so keen on that value proposition.

It's looking like I might have a couple extra second-draft prototypes of V5 to give away at .

Help me think of a contest that selects for nerdiest nerds with the freest free time (and likely to use it to write code/find bugs).

@ArchiteuthisFlux @jasoncoon You are the only person I know that not only not hates mini USB but actively loves it!

Starting to see why so few projects do PoE or do cursed PoE. Its quite a thing to implement. USB PD feels almost easy compared (assuming vendor IC does the state machine heavy lifting).

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark sort of! The standard magnetics just can't handle the current but could in theoery do it.
You get magnetics for PoE specifically but you also need to make sure its for the right standard because of the different power requirements of the verious PoE standards.
Finding magnetics thst support 802.3at and that don't cost a fortune was not easy.

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark Like I already use the Silvertel modules but there is so much stuff still around it to make those usable and not have them spew EMI.

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark then I'm not sure what you mean but I also haven't tried to implement a source.

I don't have enough good cameras to stream all the fat pigeons in nests on my balcony.
Not sure how I'm gonna stream both of these.
This one is the one from last and previous year, its about twice the size of the rock pigeons on stream.

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@niklas @danimo so just some 2.54mm pin headers that give you 12V Data GND where you can solder on a JST pigtail that the strips ususally come with?

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@danimo The S3 also has the RMII interfaces. Can check if there are cheap PHYs in the LCSC catalog, could probably even do with a 10M one.

E: oh nvm it does not, maybe wiznet then cause I do like having native USB

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@niklas @danimo what connector would you add though? The typical connector the LED strips use does not come in PCB mount variants

timonsku, (edited )
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@danimo @niklas @unlink So what I would do is add a W5500, its reasonably cheap and has better driver support outside of ESP-IDF and comes with PHY built-in.
Then maybe add a footprint for a Silvertel PoE module that you can solder in if needed but I'm not sure if ~10W is enough for the cams? Couldn't find specs of the original PSU but given the codec powers it via RJ45 it can't be that much.

You could leave the whole Ethernet bit DNP if cheaper options are needed where Ethernet is not needed.
