@mmasnick done by far the best job of chronicling the Twitter/Musk follies and the resulting social media diaspora. His 6-months-later piece, on where we stand in what I hope will be a massive move to decentralized networking, is a must-read: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/28/six-months-in-thoughts-on-the-current-post-twitter-diaspora-options/

@JadeMasterMath we're working hard to get blue sky to all users

This doesn't really answer the question *, sure clients will have various monetization models (though WTH is transactions). The issue is what is the server/Bluesky PBLLC business model?

Are they going to start putting ads in the feed? Are they going to charge users or clients for access? Stay free and make it up in volume? I have no clue, not sure anyone does either.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@paul It bothers me that there is no clarity about what his level of involvement actually is. Lots of people are running around saying he's barely involved, not making decisions, etc. Yet here he is popping up to do a Q&A about the business model.

Mastodon is an incredibly rare opportunity for open-source, non-profit, advertising-free, decentralised software to be a real contender in a category – and, if it continues to grow, even to pull many other social networks into being part of (or interoperable with) the fediverse.

It's strange to me that this isn't mentioned more in the endless opinions about features, onboarding, UX, "vibes" etc.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@acm_redfox It's run by a non-profit so I don't think that's possible.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@arachromatics Yeah... being non-profit is important too, but it's a little more indirect. That affects a whole range of things, from the fact that it won't be trying to profit from your data to the way it won't become a public company that sells itself to a billionaire, or collapses into bankruptcy. It's also likely to be longer-lasting for that reason than any for-profit platform. Less 'immediate' but ultimately determines a lot.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@scottjenson @frenchy @troed

Not scoffing, just trying to talk about some other topics. But big thanks to everyone who has come here to tell me about UX some more...

Anyway, I do not think Mastodon's problems with inclusivity stem from UX, tbh. They are far more about culture.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

The main lesson of this is that including the phrase "UX" in a toot pulls in a bunch of people who barely read it but would like to talk to you about UX. Again.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@arachromatics I interact with "having no ads" a lot as a user

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@ScienceisWhere Yeah, I do agree with this too, I just think that what is different about Mastodon gets lost in most of the comparisons between Mastodon and other platforms. Everyone mentions it's difficult/technical and hardly anyone mentions there are no ads! But yes, it does need to be easier.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@ahimsa_pdx Glad somebody did! (I think a lot of people did really, but it gets a bit lost in the discussions.)

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge In the best case though, this would be preparation for their public launch, right? Since currently you cannot read or write anything using this "open" protocol unless you have an invite.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge Isn't AT Protocol too under-specified to be able to do this yet? Since they are still (cack-handedly) inventing major parts of it, most recently blocking, and I heard decentralisation itself is a "coming soon"?

Excellent news from @Gargron about making Mastodon more accessible and inclusive for many more people! https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/05/a-new-onboarding-experience-on-mastodon/

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@anildash @cholling @Gargron That would be neat, and I can imagine things going that way – instances could create their own badged apps based on one of the open source Mastodon apps.

@zachleat In principle I'm in favour of not supporting IE, in practice I did it for a site a couple of years ago and quickly received "site doesn't work" support emails from... you guessed it.

An "open protocol" that requires you to beg for an invite to try it out is not an open protocol. It is pure bullshit.

@secretprocess I have some bad news for you about my opinions on React...

But anyway, it's not promising once you consider the number of projects that have ever delivered anything open vs the number that have promised it at the start but never done it.

tomw,

@christian Nah I don't think so, it was all quite positive but wouldn't have done well with such types.

So I wrote some stuff about Bluesky ("skeeting on the blooski" oh god) over at the blog. Plus more social media chatter, especially how it affects and regards writers.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@chuckwendig This is nicely written but I don't think 2008 Twitter was full of shitposters, memelords etc. That was later. Early Twitter was quite tech-oriented and Mastodon-like.

jynersolives, to random
@jynersolives@mastodon.social avatar

British peeps: I wondered if any of you can explain the Labour party and its position on .

Background: I was reading a recent poll stating that 59% of Leave voters who now think leaving was wrong would vote Labour (50% if they were unsure) while those Leave voters who still think Brexit was the right choice would overwhelmingly vote Conservative (51%, only 18% for Labour).

So campaigning to rejoin the single market would be a winner for Labour, no?

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@jynersolives It's confusing to us too! Yes, on balance it would improve their polling position.

My reading on it is that Labour (and the Lib Dems) got burned at the previous election where, as they see it, turning off Brexit voters cost them seats.

Now the whole situation has changed, Brexit is a thing that has actually happened and people by a large majority don't like it, but the politicians are lagging far behind the population in acknowledging that, because they're still re-fighting 2019.

Stormeko, to webdev

Anyone good with HTML and CSS that can tell me why one of my pages have a gap and the other doesn't? It happens because of the backstory bit, but I don't see anything wrong?

Page with the gap https://stormeko.neocities.org/OCs/Tangle

Page without the gap https://stormeko.neocities.org/OCs/Dakota

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@Stormeko This is a good use of CSS Grid!

I think it's that you have declared grid areas on the .container but not the columns - I noticed you try to do this later using width: 3fr but that isn't valid. Possibly what you were aiming for is (add to .container):

grid-template-columns: auto 1fr 3fr 1fr;

If that's too much of a layout change, you can get .oc-info to just expand into the gap by removing the max-width: 15em. (It becomes a bit wider than you probably intended though.)

tomw, to random
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

The only thing the popularity of an invite-only social network tells you is that some people enjoy feeling part of an exclusive club.

tomw, to random
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

Everyone: Ugh, why doesn't Mastodon fix these obvious problems?

Mastodon: Hello, we are going to fix some obvious problems.

Vocal (mostly longer-term) users: Arrggh no! This is a disaster!!!

Mystery solved.
