@mastodonmigration So much for the "open protocol" talk

Since some people have asked me, here's a quick thread on initial experience comparison between Bluesky and the fediverse. It's important to note that this comparison is somewhat absurd by default because Bluesky is still tiny & unproven, but there's interest so I'm happy to share what I've observed. Also, I don't get into protocol differences because honestly who cares. So:

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@mergesort @bhaugen @anildash I do not think launching without a block function (for example) is "hey let's wait and see" territory. It's deeply irresponsible.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@mergesort @bhaugen @anildash I don't see how composable moderation addresses issues of societal harm like, picking an example out of the air here, "this guy is trying to use the platform to organise a coup".

It's all focused on me choosing what I don't want to see (via labelling) and not on disinformation, incitement of violence, etc.

The screenshot of the "political hate groups" toggle shows the problem. Hate groups inciting violence against me remains my problem even if I choose "hide".

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@mergesort @bhaugen @anildash It's not about the screenshot but about the whole principle of the system, which is:

  1. Label things
  2. I can choose not to see them

My question is: how does this possibly address issues like incitement, where hiding it from myself is not a solution?

Mastodon admins looking at incitement can remove it easily – it's not even harmful to look at in and of itself. It is only harmful if it is able to spread.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@mergesort @bhaugen @anildash I already told you I'm not judging by the screenshot. I'm judging by the post you linked.

You're talking about moderation in future tense for a social network that has launched already!

Currently lets you set "hate groups" to "show" or "hide".

But why not give a little slider instead? To put me in control of how much hate I wish to see.

Actually, there could be two sliders, one for hate frequency and one for hate intensity.

If there is insufficient hate for my chosen hate level, it could generate some using an LLM.

Bluesky™: the precise amount of hate you choose, guaranteed.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@pimeys Oh wow, that is exactly it! This even more makes me think that Bluesky will genuinely do this.

This toot is:

  • 10% posted for mockery purposes
  • 90% posted so that you can remember it and link to it when they implement basically this

The dunking on Bluesky happening on Mastodon and the dunking on Mastodon happening on Bluesky is wild to me. Both things are attracting similar audiences, both protocols have their advantages and disadvantages, and both are recognizing some fundamental problems in the 2010 social model.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@lewin @zorangrbic How, uh, reassuring

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@lewin @zorangrbic This is just a ridiculous level of minimisation of a known bad actor who is central to the project. Why do this? If he's "not involved" then why was he posting a few days ago to a micro level of detail about features under development?

Imagine: you're a cute little mouse. You have finally escaped from the maze and tasted freedom.

But at that moment you smell some cheese and clamber back into the maze.

That's Bluesky.

@lee_ yeah, I suppose on the "no such thing as bad publicity" principle

tomw,

Not to say I'm so great, boost my toots, etc, but good anti-Bluesky posts I'm seeing (and boosting) aren't doing that well either.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@GlasWolf Yeah that makes sense, it might be that lots of people just don't care, or haven't seen it. I'm just worried by people I've seen dipping their toes in, especially people who looked like they would stick on Mastodon.

tomw, (edited )
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

These anti-Bluesky posts don't do so well, I've noticed. The smell of tasty cheese is too strong.

Or maybe it's more just hedged bets... either way, it doesn't seem like my total mistrust of Bluesky is widely shared. Which is weird.

bigzaphod, to random
@bigzaphod@mastodon.social avatar

I was invited to Bluesky a few weeks ago and followed one person and posted exactly once yet somehow people are following me so there must be decent discovery, I guess, or maybe lots of bots?

The app looks clean and familiar to Twitter users and I imagine this is the primary reason why everyone is suddenly interested in it.

I wanted to change my password and could not find a way to do it. I just checked again this morning and I still cannot find a way to change my password. So there's that.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@Ciantic @bigzaphod Mastodon already looks very similar to Twitter. These tweaks are really minimal – changing a few icons and widths – hardly seems like make-or-break ease of use stuff. Twitter used to change this kind of thing around all the time anyway.

All UK addresses can be expressed as:

Name
[Flat No.]
House No.
Postcode

Street and Town/City are not required but are recommended - they help resolve typos and such. But people insist on writing addresses out like this:

Name
[Flat No.] [Building Name]
123 Street Name [or House Name then Street!]
Small District
Larger District
Town/City
County
Postcode

If you don't give them enough fields to do this then they will take a terrible revenge on your data.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@dan Yeah – worse, you see UK as a thin translation layer (at best) for what is "zip codes" etc internally, and does some completely wrong things. Like Nationbuilder stripping leading zeroes from phone numbers, which I bet it does to this day.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@nickbwalking Yeah, they can (usually) match from either end now, so typing a postcode works but so does just typing the address.

I still think take postcode then choose from a list is faster but only if (big if!) it's implemented well.

sil, to random
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

hm. If I've got an img with object-fit contain, and I give it a background-image of linear-gradient(red, blue), then the background doesn't get object-fitted. A linear-gradient doesn't have a size, so background-size:contain doesn't work. This is annoying. Is it resolveable?

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@sil Set height: auto on the image?

The minimal example is good but it's hard to figure out the 'real' aim.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@sil set div height to min-height? But maybe there is a reason why you wouldn't want to do that.

Is there a list anywhere of which organisations are paying for Twitter gold ticks? (The ones that cost 1k+ per month.) I've only seen a couple, it would be interesting to have a list to... you know... "engage with".
