Long story short, don't trust AI with your dog.

@clacksee This clearly originated as a parody image but Google's AI has taken it seriously

Currently lets you set "hate groups" to "show" or "hide".

But why not give a little slider instead? To put me in control of how much hate I wish to see.

Actually, there could be two sliders, one for hate frequency and one for hate intensity.

If there is insufficient hate for my chosen hate level, it could generate some using an LLM.

Bluesky™: the precise amount of hate you choose, guaranteed.

Spare me from people who think the answer to "Google sucks now" is a paywalled search engine that gets most of its results from Google anyway

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

I heard "if you're not paying, you're the product!" so I'll pay some guy to call the Google API for me

I have to log in to do it but he pinky promises not to associate my searches with that account

Did you know that <input step="10"> in not only makes the up/down arrows on your number input go up and down in steps of 10, it also outright rejects as invalid any keyed-in number that isn't a multiple of 10, and does so with a user-facing error that is too cryptic for any user to understand the issue?

I now know this. Guess how I found it out.

Changing Twitter's name and logo gives up, at a stroke, all the awareness from those share/follow buttons that litter the web, and even print media and TV. They will all need to be changed, but most likely half of them will just be dropped instead and the other half will linger with the bird logo like the Google+ icons you still see around occasionally

It's funny how people who talk about web dev believe that a very particular set of "modern", JS-heavy, build-heavy practices are the only thing worth discussing, while continues to quietly take over everything.

Do platforms "enshittify"? Well, yes and no.

Think of it this way: You are a bee. You are handed a convenient, free, pre-built beehive. Amazing! You tell all your friends and together you get to work filling it with honey.

One day a guy turns up, blows smoke at you and takes the honey.

Did the beehive get worse? Not exactly. The whole plan was there from the beginning. You just weren't told.

I don't post much politics on here but:

I'll be at this march tomorrow to rejoin the EU

You hear that? It's the sound of bits of history decaying.

Sooner or later it will all be gone, like every upload on Myspace.

It's funny to me that people use "said the quiet part loud" in very serious contexts when it is a quote from... Krusty the Clown

Me: "update the-thing"

"Ohohoho I think you mean upgrade! Not update! Ohoho even though this error message shows that I clearly understood the intent anyway! Use the right word fool!"

Does a word processor exist (regular app or web app I suppose) that displays a section outline with 'live' word counts next to each section? Like:

Introduction (434 words)
Chapter 1 (942 words)
etc

This seems so simple but searching turns up a) other people asking the same question and b) bodgy scripts/plugins.

Stop releasing "new web browsers" that are just Chromium.

Stop releasing "new search engines" that are just Bing.

What a colossal waste of time.

Is Composer just completely stuffed in PHP8 or am I doing something wrong?

(Composer's website seems to list 7.2 as the most recent supported version.)

People say Mastodon will never go mainstream but I just saw some guy who had posted a picture of a bit of rubbish in a park with an annoyed message about it.

You don't get more mainstream than that, kids

Saw a thread with loads of boosts and positive comments recommending GNU Mailman as an open source substitute for Mailchimp and... what? What??

Anyone recommending this has no clue where the difficult part is today in sending emails at any list size over ~100. (Clue: it's the bit where people actually receive any of the emails.)

The trouble with Bluesky's "labelling" moderation (everything is tagged and you choose what you don't like) is that it assumes moderation is entirely a problem of what I personally see.

This model cannot handle things that will have negative consequences for me, and for society generally, even if I remain unaware that they are happening. For example, incitement to harassment or violence, doxxing, presidents calling for coups...

It does nothing about posts that have real-world consequences.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

It's a moderation model where someone could broadcast calls for mass murder of some group I am a member of, and my only recourse would be a switch for "don't see murder posts", while their (willing) audience continues to bask in the murder feed

People today: why I am leaving Substack

This shift is good overall but it is annoying when people refuse, for the 100th time, to acknowledge that there may be a downside to walking into mousetraps because look, I really need that cheese man
