Apple's accessibility announcements, returning to an old scanner friend, and leaping into the iPad discourse.

@siracusa @david @marcoarment @caseyliss Follow-up: can you help me square John’s circle of using Dropbox instead of iCloud per episodes where you all discussed Dropbox’s creepy permissions requests? I’m torn about what service to rely on and pay for Google One 2 TB storage in addition to iCloud 2 TB storage. :( I recently ran out of storage on my 512 GB iPhone 13 mini that is now in bootloop because iCloud synced many files.

@siracusa Do you mess with Clipboard history? I really like the way Windows has implemented it. [Win]+[v] gives you a popup at your cursor where you can pick from previous things put into the paste buffer. What are the cool kids using to emulate this in MacOS?

@siracusa besides the M4, are the iPad Pro subsystems and thermal envelope such that it really could run macOS as well as the fanless Macs?

@atpfm Question for @siracusa: Have you considered going back to doing your massive macOS reviews, even if not for Ars Technica?

I remember you mentioning they were a ton of work and you dedicated so much time that you ended up working less than minimum wage to write them while working a regular job. But now that you’re self-employed and presumably have a larger audience that is willing to directly sponsor you (podcast memberships), have you given it a thought to trying again solo?

@atpfm Do you have any insight into the “moderation” process behind App Store reviews? I was looking at the Google app reviews for some inane reason last week, and noticed a slew of reviews that I can’t decide whether they are confused elders, farmed reviews targeting the wrong “Google” listing, or ChatGPT generated gook. Leaning ChatGPT, but my question then is: to what end? And does Apple have any system for verifying reviews other than having an Apple ID?

@siracusa in the Home app or Control Center, you just tap the icon to toggle on/off and not adjust dimming. Tapping anywhere else on a dimmable button will open the dimming controls.

Would you ever reconsider Apple Podcast Subscriptions?
Yes, I know, Overcast exists.
Yes, I know, Apple charges money.
Yes, I know, I have been listening for years.
Still asking.

Hi @siracusa and

My photo library is over 100,000 photos, and about 4500 video clips.

Video is big, but I was surprised to find those photos are about 80% of the storage size. Mostly all are HEVC already.

This size difference makes me think I should be managing my videos somewhere other than photos - where I can make smart albums about video length and other video metrics.

Do you manage video clips elsewhere?

@atpfm How do you keep projects that are using source control in sync across machines? Yeah, dumb question, but it's annoying to realize I didn't push my project before packing up the laptop and having to dig it out.

@atpfm Is the Apple Studio Display a good purchase today, two years in since launch? In Norway, I can get a second hand one (entry level one) in mint condition for 1300 USD. A brand new one from Apple Norway is 1750 USD (incl taxes). So quite the savings. Is it still a good purchase today at 1300USD or is the tech too old (and not that great to begin with) to be worth it in 2024, and should I rather wait for the Studio Display 2 (with hopefully a better webcam and promotion?)

@siracusa you mentioned that often regulators are not technical enough and then you also say you would rather have Apple and the EUC to discuss directly until the EUC deems them compliant… so that would remove the ability for devs who are technical and directly involved from giving feedback before it is too late (having the EUC declare it compliant would remove strengths from devs’ arguments).

@atpfm Apple Watch Repairs, Blood Oxygen follow-up:

I have a Series 6 that wasn’t holding a charge anymore. I brought it to my Apple Store for an out-of-warranty battery service last week. I have no need for a newer model, so $99 sounded better than buying a new watch. Plus I expected to keep the O2 feature. Last step before paying for the service, I had to agree the replacement WONT have the O2 feature. Replacement came a few days later and nope, no Blood Oxygen

@atpfm Currently helping family members separate the shared Apple ID they have been using. Didn’t see an easy way to move everything on one phone to a new ID. The plan is this: We are trying to get all original photos downloaded to one of the phones before signing out of iCloud. (Photos is taking its time.)Then we will sign into the new account and hopefully everything will merge to the new account. Is this a good plan? Should it work?

@atpfm I use my 2nd generation AirPods Pro virtually every waking minute. While it doesn't matter how far away I am in my apartment when connected to my iPhone or iPad, the connection to my MacBook is interrupted as soon as I am two rooms away. Is this a common phenomenon and, if so, what is the technical reason?

I'm using an iPhone 14 Pro, a 2022 iPad Pro and a M1 MacBook Air.

I work in commercial finance. Your discussion of the DMA and the line of credit makes me want to clarify what those actually ARE.

That’s money that must be held, essentially in escrow, by your bank. It’s not like a line of credit; it’s more akin to a minimum deposit.

Small consortiums of indie devs will simply never get that kind of money together in order to control their own distribution destiny.

@atpfm hopefully an intersting for @siracusa: why did apple stop charging for major OSX upgrades?

As far as I could tell, they went from $129 (most cats) to $30 (last couple of cats) down to free (CA locations).

I realize the software landscape was very different then (OSs came on CDs) but a paid upgrade system seems like it would fragment the userbase much more than we have today.

@atpfm @siracusa Re-asking this as it seems right up John’s alley. After scanning someone's glasses before using a Vision Pro headset, why did they go with physical inserts versus handling the adjustments computationally? Isn't it just math? Maybe it's math, but so significant that they don't yet have the computational headroom to do it in real time, but might be able to eventually?

@atpfm Where do I post a question for ? My M1 MBP's fan runs very loudly whenever it's "docked" (plugged in and connected to my Thunderbolt Display), but is completely silent when on battery - and I can't notice any performace differences. Is there a way to stop the fan when it's plugged in? (I understand that may mean throtttling its performance, but that may be OK…)
