I don't know if I've ever been much of a tech enthusiast.

tsvenson,

@dabeaz

More about the challenges?

tsvenson,

@dabeaz

I know. That soaks me up too. It is one of the many freedoms open source provides really well.

I once heard someone say, "I don't think I should have to thank someone for doing their job," and I am still horrified.

tsvenson,

@nedbat

Doesn't it depend?

tsvenson,

@nedbat

The kind of job, the situation and many other factors.

For example, I wouldn't thank a telemarketer for doing their job calling to try and sell me something.

tsvenson,

@nedbat

Then yes.

Chrome is hot garbage.

A long time ago it was a snappy rebel browser that took the Internet by storm.

Today it's worse than IE ever was, tracking your browsing habits and sharing them with advertisers even if you take efforts to protect your privacy. It's all opt-out too.

tsvenson,

@geerlingguy

It is a very clear sign of desperation from Google. It is really sad. So very far from "Don't do evil"

I've spent far too much time this week working with ATLAS, OpenBLAS, and Blis, and still don't have a strong opinion about any one of them lol

Except that I still hate algebra

tsvenson,
tsvenson,

@geerlingguy

Figured, but couldn't resist as that Atlas clip showed up in my feed literally minutes before your post.

Re linear algebra I'm a newbie, but I recently got this book that maybe can be edutainment for you too.

Scary sounding email in my ...

"Subject: Thief

Who are you bc I don't know you you are a thief and until I get my babies returned home I will not stop trying any way I can to bring them home. You are a liar and just as bad as they. Whoever they are. Take your code off my devices"

Thanks for sharing. Needed that to 🤪

People who took a longer break (say 3 months plus) from computers, how do you get back into doing things again? Specially mentally!

tsvenson,

@kushal

Is that even possible as a choice in developed countries?

tsvenson,

@kushal

Ahh!

Then in my personal experience it is a mix of:

a) The break let some knowledge sink in, mentally, and I now have a deeper and wider understanding about it.

b) I've gone rusty about some things and it will take a bit of time for the old skills to resurface.

The fun part is to realize which one about what 😁

Just tried the new #Textual extension for #VScode.

Very nice only have to refactor to .tcss and no more annoying false errors with red squiggly underscores in the editor.

Sweet 😀

New version of Textual landed, with the new Digits widget.

Slightly smaller release than typical. We have both @davep and @darrenburns working on some big features.

The next 2 releases are going to blow some minds...

Here's me looking forward to getting a very blowned mind 😶‍🌫️

Are people still using slack?
This isn’t facetious. I want to have place to allow people to ask and answer questions for the upcoming pytest course. I’m wondering if slack is fine or if there is a better choice.

tsvenson,

@brianokken Yes, due to communities I keep an eye and that still uses Slack.

However, since they made the free tier so much worse - especially started to automatically deleting posts older than 90 days - my sense is quite a few of such communities will migrate to something else.

I haven't used the new client yet though.

Discord is much better, and lots of Python communities are already there, so that is another good argument for it.

A user is rude and DEMAND a change to your project, but after lots of back-and-forth a slightly different improvement is landed. Should the person get credit for their "report"?

tsvenson,

@bagder from following you for some time, I think you saw through the "DEMAND" and thought it was worth responding. Obviously, since it resulted in a change, it paid off.

Yes, some users are more energy draining than others.

But you, with this question, just shown that that is a price that is well worth paying.

Just, hopefully, not too often.

To the #Camera folks here, does it make sense to buy a #Nikon D850 in 2023? I still have my expensive Nikon lenses and was wondering if I should get a new body to use them.

tsvenson,

@kushal yes, but it is also about half the price compared to the D850. But maybe my tip was about giving you a taste of just how much has happened with DSLR recently. As I write, with the 6700 Sony raises the bar a lot.

tsvenson,

@kushal I've just gotten back to shooting with system cameras again the last year. Was a local freelance photographer decades ago.

It's impressive the tech they are able to squeeze into so limited packages.
