Unpopular (maybe?) opinion:

The way to get better at & isn't to build complex web applications with frontend frameworks. The way to get better at HTML & CSS is to write content with HTML & CSS.

  • Build a blog.
  • Build a landing page.
  • Build a report.
  • Build a portfolio.
  • Build lists.

Most web applications are simply content + forms in a fancy UI trench coat. 😅 They just tend to be far more "componetized" — making it much harder to grok the underlying semantics at first.

Sometimes #WebComponents need to know what’s happening inside of them.

Whether you’re working with the concept of “slots” or just plain ol’ #HTML, you may need to react to changes imposed from without.

Thankfully, the native platform provides a solution in the form of MutationObserver, an API which is so powerful it can beat at the heart of entire #JS frameworks (Stimulus being but one example).

Sorry be the bearer of bad news, but the typical DOM APIs you use to turn strings of HTML into new DOM do not parse declarative shadow DOM (DSD). All those <template shadowrootmode="…"> tags remain just that, template tags. No shadow DOM to be found anywhere.

If you're building your web applications against hosting platform SDKs instead of host-agnostic open source libraries, you are taking on an arguably unacceptable degree of tech debt and vendor lock-in.

Plan your architecture accordingly.

(In case you're wondering what this means, here's an example:

Open source library: Redis

Hosting platform SDK: Netlify Blobs

Use Redis? You can host anywhere. Use Netlify Blobs? You're stuck with Netlify. FOREVER… 😱)

The Government Digital Service blog for the UK has published an article about their performance gains across a variety of properties, with “reductions of up to 40% in CSS size on some pages.”

This was accomplished by unbundling styles which are specific to certain pages and not the entire website and loading those styles on those specific pages, instead of loading all of a website’s via a single bundle.
