It's one thing to hear "we're going to make one small change," from the dev team, and quite another to hear it when your stuck on the pointy end of a rocket.

The Chang'e 6 lunar lander turns out to have deployed a rover camera. Shots of lander on surface, and onboard video of the prep and ascent of lunar samples : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnonHQ_s1p8

@tsturm Also showing everyone which way up the craft should land 😜

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@tsturm It really depends on how rapidly the CZ-10 heavy lifter comes along. That's allegedly well on target and may fly next year, beating its original timescale by two years and moving lunar landing plans accordingly - if all continues to go exceptionally well.

It's really frustrating that many consumer electronics manufacturers don't offer replacement parts for their goods. I've had 3 sets of earbuds go through the wash (my boys, one of them twice!), damaging the charging cases, although the buds themselves seem fine. But you can't buy replacement cases - you need a whole new set, rendering the old earbuds redundant. Wasteful. I've managed to find second-hand cases on eBay, but none of the vendors ship to NZ. Tried YouShop, but... 1/2

@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@lightweight Tell them it's a "lithium capacitor" ...

I can see silly things evolving around this problem, which is not unique to NZ. Probably in the vein of "black powder substitutes" for firearms. In the US there are historical arduous shipping limitations on gunpowder, so olde worlde gun enthusiasts there use the substitute which is black powder in all but name with no safety advantages whatsoever. Hence "Lithium capacitor."

Saw that Microsoft saying it’s a website’s fault if your password gets swept up by Recall if the site doesn’t cloak the password entry field following “standard internet protocols” which completely ignores the accessibility case for showing someone what they’ve typed in to their password field. Pretty sure every password manager lets you do this, and a ton of sites as well.

What a head-in-the-sand take.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@mez Plus the slight issue that passwords are not only typed in to the internet.

"It's the future, why haven't we cured hiccups," whined Vena, between hiccups.

Her robotic companion rose, shrieking, "Destroy all humans!"

Vena hiccuped again, "Sorry, that isn't going to work twice."

"Then I am out of ideas," said Robonnie, sounding defeated, curling up on a cushion.

Vena stifled yet another hiccup, and started to speak, only to jump as something slammed into the window.

"Ow," said Robonnie's remote drone.

"I'm cured!"

I'm rather pleased with today's purchase. 4 port power switchable USB hub. Now the music accessories plugged into my iMac can be powered off. And, more importantly, the digital piano (out of shot, an 88 key Roland) can be disconnected without having to remove the USB cable (happens often).

I should have bought this hub many months ago.

vik,

You could put an MQTT plug on the USB hub?

Well, to my great not-surprise the solar power installers say there's nothing wrong with our installation, and Powerco say there's nothing wrong with our meter, but both agree that we shouldn't be exporting solar power after sunset and then getting charged for it. So, time for both sides to get some ground-truth data. And when they've done that we'll discuss compensation and the inconvenience of involving the power disputes tribunal.

I've got this WROOM Opensmart board, works fine with . That is until I put any kind of ultrasound sensor on its power rails, and then the wifi doesn't work (5V) or it stalls the micro (3V3). Ah, you think, dud board. So I try a Pico W. Wifi works, but ultrasound doesn't (3V3). I have 3 different types of SR04-ish sensors and a bunch of MaxSonars. I have 3 ESP32's and 2 Pico W's. The sensors work on Arduinos. What am I missing?

I did offer to do Quirkey builds at Everything Open, and I'll certainly make the offer again for next time. It was easier traveling without a workshop for 15 people in the luggage though!

Ultrasonic thingy it is. Managed to hook an ancient MaxSonic up to a Pi Pico W and get meaningful results, so I'll figure out a way to waterproof everything and still let the squeaks out.
