I can connect this phone to my living room display and VLC plays videos on the external display just fine.

But how the hell do I even mount a remote filesystem to actually access video files?

ssh-keygen and sshfs might not be super newbie friendly, but at least they work. I can't find anything remotely equivalent on Android.

What the Linux ecosystem needs right now is a solid community-maintained distribution for non-technical people.

Like, if someone who's using Windows asks me right now "which Linux can I use on my laptop", I have no answer.

My partner tried Fedora, but it was so unstable and broken all over the place that she asked me to get rid of it, even if it mean starting from scratch again.

She now uses PopOS and I've had to configure dozens of things for her that would have been trivial on Windows 7.

Sure, having to open a terminal to fix a problem is not newbies friendly. And having to open a car's front cover to fix an engine problem isn't friendly at all either.

Yet somehow I only hear people complaining about one of the two. And it's not the one which can lead to injury.

In an alternative reality, people prefer comfort to status symbols, so they ride public transit instead of each one buying and piloting their own cars.

@pine64eu Any idea when the Pinephone Pro Keyboard (SKU: PPHONE-KEYBRD) will be in stock again?

@drewdevault epoll(7) and poll(2) don't allow implementing non-blocking I/O on a filesystem. Is implementing such a thing under the radar for Bunnix or Helios?

"Considered harmful" considered harmful.

Using "X considered harmful" in a title is considered harmful and should not be done.

Tagged unions have changed error handling forever. There's no going back to exceptions with try/catch.

@davx5app My calendar events don't show attachments. I read the manual1, but I'm not entirely sure I understand correctly. Is it impossible to view attachments to events?

Disappointed that my compositor has layer-shell but no layer-white or layer-yolk. How am I supposed to implement an omelette app?

I just watched this interesting video on the Engieering of the gameboy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKm45Az02YE

It's amazing to see that the criticism that it received is the same criticism that the Switch received decades later. Mainly, complaints about it not being "the highest end hardware available". This supposed limitation actually made both devices cheaper, more energy efficient (so lower cost of ownership), and lighter than the competition.

If xz had been proprietary, would the bug have caught any attention?

600ms (the runtime overhead in this case) is a fraction of what it takes to log into some systems.

@modos content-type-v1 is a wayland protocol where clients can specify the content type for a given surface. Currently clients can specify photo, video or game (text seems to be a missing content type).

This might be useful for you to optimise how portions of the screen render.

I'd love to hear comments on how this works for you.

@martijnbraam While discussing the slowness of pkgs.alpinelinux.org today, I remembered pkgs.postmarketos.org (which is actually a lot faster). Did you write apkbrowser just to deal with performance? I'm trying to get a clearer picture of where each one stands.

I was having trouble mounting my external drive. My external drive wasn't showing up in /dev/sda. I checked dmesg and nothing. It just wouldn't show up. I thought for a minute or two, then looked at the disk by my side.

I had not taken it out of the box yet.

The DMA has some pretty interesting in multiple fields, but is extremely underwhelming on its impact on messaging.

Gatekeepers won't be federating messaging or anything alike. Instead, to interact with people who use Meta's messaging services, one would need to sign up as a partner and fulfil a variety of additional requirements.

As an individual, this makes little to no difference. I still can't set up a server that federates; people are still in a silo unless a sign a contract with Meta.
