Minor irritation of the day:

I really like the image mode: it lets me look at the results of my runs (output SVG) and play with tweaking them manually and seeing the results with a keystroke right there. I can flip through a dozen outputs so easily.

But it doesn't handle text paths, which is deeply unfortunate today when all I'm doing it text paths.

It's all ImageMagick under the hood, and IM understands text paths so why? why???

yantar92,
@yantar92@emacs.ch avatar

@mathling AFAIK, the newer Emacs versions use a library to display SVGs. Maybe your Emacs is too old?

Drafting a brief report on 2023. The other organizers suggested including a section on conference highlights. It's hard for me to pick, although we should definitely mention @howard's talk on solo RPGs in as a crowd favourite, and it was nice to have John Wiegley, @yantar92, and Stefan Kangas speak about core development. Want to make my life easier and reply with your favourite talks and why? :)

yantar92,
@yantar92@emacs.ch avatar

@sachac @howard My personal highlights are not necessarily about specific presentations, but about represented topics:

  1. Multiple talks on using Emacs/Org mode in university setting both on student and lecturer side. This gives a promise on more people being exposed to Emacs and more people using it in their professional toolchain.

  2. The raise of LLM talks - Emacs being text editor is a natural interface to LLMs that do text-crunching.

  3. "Parallel text replacement" talk showing us that even the most common text-based interfaces are not yet "figured-out". Even in Emacs.

devinprater, to emacs

Okay so I have an Org capture template set to take a note and ask for a tag. I type in the tag, and the amazing piece of magic puts my cursor right there after the heading marker, and before the tag, ready to type a heading. Like, I would pay the developers of Org, if I'm not doing so already. I'm not actually sure. But this is going to make my work so much easier. Just categorize students into tags, and sort by those tags, and at the end of the month I'll have all the info I need for a report. Ugh so darn good! Of course, if there's an even better way to do this, I'd love to hear it.

@devinprater

> puts my cursor right there after the heading marker, and before the tag, ready to type a heading

I am not sure if this was a question, but see %^G and %? in org-capture-templates docstring.

> Just categorize students into tags, and sort by those tags, and at the end of the month I'll have all the info I need for a report.

Sorting by tags is ambiguous in general (there might be multiple). I recommend assigning a heading property and sorting by it (see org-sort - r By the value of a property.). You can also define a custom sorting function.

yantar92,
@yantar92@emacs.ch avatar

@devinprater Here is a small command you can try to use. It selects the first @tag in headings and sorts by that tag:

(defun yant/org-sort-entries-by-tag ()
"Sort subtree at point by the first tag starting with @."
(interactive)
(org-sort-entries
nil ?f
(lambda () (cl-find-if (lambda (tag) (when (string-match-p "^@" tag) ;; only @tag
;; Strip leading @
(substring tag 1)))
(org-get-tags nil 'local)))
(lambda (tag1 tag2) (when (and (stringp tag1) (stringp tag2)) (string-lessp tag1 tag2)))))

    In case you might think that I've got my under control: 3 hours ago I had 791 items (from 2019 onward) in my . Those are ideas, tasks, notes, bookmarks I captured but didn't process yet. 😲

    At the moment, I brought it down to 274 and I'll continue throwing things out tomorrow. 🏆

    yantar92,
    @yantar92@emacs.ch avatar

    @publicvoit @greg I usually just refile things away from inbox first. Then, I dedicate up to 30 minutes per day, but only for the freshly refiled tasks in subtrees I currently mark as active. This allows to not spend too much time on topics I do not want to spend time on for now.

    Please help collecting statistics to optimize Emacs GC defaults

    Many of us know that Emacs defaults for garbage collection are rather ancient and often cause singificant slowdowns. However, it is hard to know which alternative defaults will be better.

    Emacs devs need help from users to obtain real-world data about Emacs garbage collection. See the discussion in https://yhetil.org/emacs-devel/87v8j6t3i9.fsf@localhost/

    Please install https://elpa.gnu.org/packages/emacs-gc-stats.html and send the generated statistics via email to emacs-gc-stats@gnu.org after several weeks.

    #emacs #announcement

    yantar92,
    @yantar92@emacs.ch avatar

    This is a final call to submit your GC statistics.

    We now got around 90 reports in the mailing list [1] and the frequency of getting new reports is fairly low now.

    After a week from now, I will start bringing all the data together.

    [1] https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-gc-stats/

    -gc-stats

    yantar92,
    @yantar92@emacs.ch avatar

    The results are presented in my EmacsConf2023 talk:

    emacs-gc-stats: Does garbage collection actually slow down Emacs?

    https://emacsconf.org/2023/talks/gc/

    -gc-stats

    yantar92,
    @yantar92@emacs.ch avatar

    @publicvoit @hajovonta This is likely hapenning when you are working on Emacs actively

    The way GCMH handles GC is (1) setting a really large >1Gb threshold most of the time; (2) reducing it on idle. However, if you manage to exceed that >1Gb threshold by not taking a breaks from Emacs, it takes really, really long time to garbage collect all that 1Gb+ staff.
