Small teaser for people waiting for a new development version of @GIMP.

You'll still have to wait for a few days for it to be available on the website for all platforms (and giving us time to write the news). I know, I'm mean to tease you all like this! 👿😜

@zemarmot, @CmykStudent

"Text layers can now be rendered in the full image's gamut (not sRGB only anymore), though colors are trimmed to the gamut and are always 8-bit", but

"Text outline colors are now rendered in float in the full image's gamut, without precision loss".

Is this a temporary limitation for text fills?

zemarmot,
@zemarmot@fosstodon.org avatar

@CmykStudent @prokoudine Well it's temporary in the sense that we would like to do better. Now it's unfortunately not easy to change because we rely on Pango to draw text using hexadecimal markup which means we can't go unbounded and high-precision.

There is no limitation for outlines because we draw them ourselves (through Cairo).

See pango markup: https://docs.gtk.org/Pango/pango_markup.html

My commit message explains this: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/commit/e992ca3e514569a35b4077bb22315b0d085ff2b9.patch

@CmykStudent @prokoudine Moving away from Pango is part of our plans and was even part of Idriss' GSoC project (but it was too big so the project got scaled down).

Idriss did already a lot of very nice improvements regarding GIMP's font support. It's much less visible than stuff like NDE but GIMP 3 will actually be a huge step forward regarding font support.

Pango is even considered deprecated by GTK. We had a GSoC meeting with Pango maintainers back at Wilber Week: https://developer.gimp.org/conferences/wilberweek/2023-amsterdam/#2023-05-26-1

👋 Look what I merged just now on @GIMP main development branch.

For people who don't get what this screencast is, it means non-destructive editing will be in GIMP 3.0! 🥳

By the way, you want to thank @CmykStudent for their work on this, as well as Jacob Boerema for his help in the review and everyone else who participated in tracker or IRC.

It's also thanks to all past developers (a lot mitch, my co-maintainer) making this cherry-on-the-top possible, and of course to @pippin for the incredible work on GEGL, GIMP's backend for graph-based raster editing.

GIMP is not dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants, but a lot of dwarfs helping each others! 💌

The "color space invasion" project in @GIMP implies things like: RGB values need to be accompanied with color space info. Also improving color selection, color picking, soft-proofing, and so on.

With 1 exception, we entered feature freeze for GIMP 3.0.

The exception is the layer effect MR (because it's a pretty big deal), giving it a few more days for the code to mature and being more stable. Hopefully layer effects can still make it to @GIMP 3!

So here it is! The finale countdown to @GIMP 3! I've been preparing this schedule for weeks now and I think we can make it.

My hopeful deadline is the next @lgm though if we manage to release before, it's all for the better, right? 😊

From time to time, people ask us why we are not on Github sponsor. The main reason was that most our work (e.g. @GIMP) is not hosted on Github (but e.g. on @gnome or @XOrgFoundation 's Gitlab).

Anyway as a test, we decided to set up a Github sponsor profile and see if it helps: https://github.com/sponsors/Jehan

Since our project is already crowdfunded through other platforms, this is only an additional option. No need to switch if you already fund us!

As always thanks to all our patrons by the way! 💌

Yesterday I finished a patch I had for MozJPEG (JPEG compression improvements by @mozilla) to make it side-by-side installable with jpeg-turbo (hence available in more distributions) and discoverable at build.
Once it's in, I will merge a new option in @GIMP to enable better compression (unfortunately encoding is also slower by an order of magnitude, hence this cannot be default).

More code being reviewed these days, again by another interns, Shubham Daule, who is doing a really great work so far: the ability for paint tools to grow layers as you paint past their boundaries.

I was not planning on having this in @GIMP 3.0 initially, and it's not merged yet, but seeing how well it is progressing, it might just get in soon!

More code review and news in @GIMP: we started to include pieces of the work by Idriss Fekir, one of our interns, to improve font support.

In particular, like most FLOSS using the Pango library, we had breakages with fonts using uncommon style name (Pango didn't like this kind of originality). Well we don't anymore!

Or if you had different fonts with the same name: this too will work now!

Still very much work-in-progress and a lot more to be done! Still, it's encouraging!

So I just reviewed and merged new snapping features in GIMP by mr.fantastic:

  1. snapping by layer's bounding box ◰ (side and center);
  2. snapping by equidistance 📏 between 3 layers.

To be discovered in the next development version of @GIMP (2.99.18… or who knows maybe 3.0.0-RC1! 😜)

at Wilber Week: yesterday we had a meeting with @Blender, @inkscape, Wayland/GTK and of course @GIMP_Official developers about color management on Linux. It was quite insightful and constructive! 🤓
