hey @ben someone pointed me at your showmy.chat project which looks amazing :) I just had a comment, maybe this is in the more extensive instructions already, but the quickstart currently doesn't indicate how wide/high the chat overlay should be :) THis might be somewhat subjective but a bit of guidance would be really helpful for screen reader users who have a hard time figuring out if text is going to overflow/get cropped :)

I think the newest resistance piece I see a lot of these days is " We just made the component, we're constrained by how the component is used". That is a self-inflicted limitation at best. If you see a component is consistently being used wrong, likely your documentation needs work, and if it is happening in one particular use case, the component might just not be intended for that use case and may need to be forked. That we CAN reuse a component doesn't always need we SHOULD reuse the component. It is still possible to make bespoke experiences, and one-size-fits-all does not, in fact, always fit all. Sorry to break it to you.

THe interesting thing about working remote for primarily non-DUtch companies; you totally forget about your own national holidays. It took me until now to realize the Netherlands has a day off today :P

The case for AI in is a hotly contested one but I do feel the baby's being tossed out with the bathwater just a tiny bit. Yes, it is bad that AI is being used to phase out hoomans in all sorts of pursuits. And yes, it is also true that at least at the moment, Ai-generated anything is generally lower quality than hooman-generated stuff. And yes, it is also true that we're seeing AI in places we really shouldn't be seeing it (MDN anyone?) and that people, just like always with a new toy, are going absolutely nuts with it and putting it front and center like it's Cthulhu's new miracle to end all toilet paper shortages. But it CAN, at times, actually be an enabler. It CAN, OCCASIONALLY, actually be used for good, and I don't think people who find this out and do this should be villified

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

If image generation gets good enough to make me Twitch banners, or blog featured images, or make small video edits for me, or write me CSS that actually looks good, you bet your glutal hemispheres I'm going to make use of it. Purely a matter of efficiency. We haven't had a decent video editor that's as long as I've been alive, I think i've waited long enough for hoomans to step up. If AI can do it, AI can do it. Screen readers can't tell me if CSS is doing what I want, so if AI can do it that just means I can be more productive as a developer. Again, I've waited for this situation to improve in for my entire professional career, so if what is for all intents and purposes a new tool can enable me to do this, I will happily make use of it. Summarizing articles in between all the newsletter popups, ads, images without alt text and silent videos? Absolutely. Just another tool at this point. So yeah. Bad, but not all bad.

@zersiax The case I like to make is that neural networks aren't new technology, what's got Silicon Valley excited is making them larger than ever before. (personally I don't find this strategy interesting, & I question its value)

We've long used it for accessibility! We should continue! But then its banal.

The narrative & the reality of this tech seem to be frustratingly different at the moment... Its the narrative that's harmful, not so much the tech...

To what degree does NVDA actually have support for TUIs? When I look at TUIs (terminal user interfaces) for tools like Joplin, Vim, practically anything that requires using arrow keys/tab within a terminal, it almost always is a horrible experience. Are there things TUI developers can do to better accommodate NVDA? @NVAccess @tspivey
Do terminal-first tools like TDSR in a WSL2 shell improve this at all?

miki,
@miki@dragonscave.space avatar

@tspivey @zersiax @NVAccess We really need ARIA for terminals. This is totally doable with TTY escape codes, just like we have images and clickable links now. Terminals are supposed to be so accessible, but no access to semantic information for screen readers just kills the whole concept.

This isn't just for traidtional TUIs, software that puts "2024-04-12, 23:42.6857 CET, warning: /a/very/long/path/to/the/software/src/utils/helper.py: warning:" before every log message would also benefit from this.

Piciok,

@zersiax @SunDial79 @NVAccess @tspivey At some point I was using a music player whose name evades me now, to arrange playlists on a Linux machine over SSH. I remember setting something in the config so that the cursor always lands in the currently selected line and that seemed to do the trick. Not sure if that helps.

Does the concept of a Boot Menu still exist in modern UEFI? Like ...just a list of currently bootable devices, pick one from the list? I don't need boot order priorities, secureBoot etc., just ...hit a key, list of boot devices, pick one, done. DO we still do that on modern mobos?

holsta,
@holsta@helvede.net avatar

@zersiax @alcinnz My UEFI board certainly responds to F8 so I can bring up a boot menu, yes.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@holsta @alcinnz have we decided on a key for it that's somewhat universal? f8 sounds like the boot modes switch for windows as well but it could very easily also be just the bios boot menu for some mobos :)

Getting "Dropbox unexpectedly quit" messages on windows 11 ... anybody else? THinking of just getting something like CLoudMounter and being rid of the whole stupid thing at this point ...

davebell396,

@zersiax
Thanks for the report, I tried to download a file from a link and the error message implied Dropbox had gone into dead-parrot mode, not any sort of temporary fault. At least I now know current users are surprised.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@davebell396 I don't think it's service-wide ... it's some random convergence of events on this particular machine that's causing havoc, and because we don't do useful error messages anymore in 2024 to not scare the users I have no idea what the actual problem is, so am going to have to do a clean OS install and hope that fixes sit. It's a new machine , so really only just a few hours of time lost, but yeah ...

Let's grab the new NVDA Update. NVDA: Error checking for update. Me: Oh, let's check the logs for what the actual error is. Logs: sad logs noise no error written to log. Me: of course not ... sigh ... fine, I'll go grab the update manually because the autoUpdater is refusing to autoUpdate and also refusing to tell me why!

I find myself contemplating Dutch pejoratives today. Where the Americans appear to have an unhealthy obsession with one's anuas and everything that happens to it and comes out of it, see also : asshole, shit, assWipe, assHat, etc., the Dutch appear to have split their attention between horrible diseases (typhoid sufferer, cancer thing, get tuberculosis) and genitalia, particularly the non-dangly kind. Our word for fuck as in "aww fuck!" as well as "this fucking thing' is all replaced by essentially the dutch word for pussy, with that same level of formality. One has to wonder how these things happen :) Can we combine them? Can something annoying or unwanted be defined as a typhoid pussy thing? Spoilers, no, not really, but its fun to contemplate. Or should that be cuntemplate in thse? ehh, I am goin

What is this thing about Windows Terminal and NVDA somehow not working together well? I hear from various people they're having trouble, but it's working fine for me, I'm wondering where the difference is.

jfayre,

@zersiax @simon I’m definitely seeing Windows terminal problems here as well. If a lot of text gets output to the terminal, NVDA will pretty much freeze. Need to restart it. I would love to know how to fix this.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@jfayre @simon that I've seen in regular CMD as well though. I think the upcoming 2024.1 actually fixes that up to a point ....while also breaking all addons again :P

Do I know folks who with a ? Got a couple questions after today's thing

miki,
@miki@dragonscave.space avatar

@zersiax I've done it briefly, but I hate it. Use VS Code if you can. I usually just use "jupyter nbconvert" or whatever to convert the notebook to Markdown and/or Python, depending on what I need, and then work with it that way. It would definitely come in useful for me, there are things that would be a lot easier to do inside a notebook, but the interface is just horrendous, especially if you're working on the code.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@miki it's gotten a little better than I remember. You can arrow through the cells now, the cell contents read with NVDA just fine. It just weirdly truncates output towards the right edge of the lines and some other things work oddly. VS Code's implementation is definitely better, yeah, when I have that luxury :)

Damn ... last night I smelled smoke which caused me to do a quick wellfare check on my devices to see if anything was amiss, only to find out there was just a strong, smoky, gunpowdery smell coming in from outside. Now I know why ... an apartment burned to the ground just a few streets over, can't be more than 200 meters. I must've walked by it all the time without even knowing. Now its gone ...and unfortunately so is its inhabitant. Really sobering thought...

@zersiax It's strange how much I love fire, but how much I'm afraid of an uncontrolled fire or fire somewhere I don't want it. Like in my home. And for some reason I'm much more afraid of a house fire than flooding for example, even if both are really bad and the flooding bit actually already kinda happened. Twice.
