@hmaealdeza Hey Hannah! How's it going? Hope you're fine! I happen to be a huge telephony enthusiast myself. A quick question: have you got any recordings connected to telephony you could share? Anything goes: dialing sequences, ringback, busy and other service tones; service announcements etc? We're hosting a small collection of this stuff here in Poland so if you would be interested, I could link to that. The closest I have ever come to Filipino telephony experience is dumping the firmware of a Cherry Mobile smartphone and ripping the brand ringtone. Thanks a lot in advance. Have a great day!

It was a nice and very informative day at the Connections Museum. I’ve seen and experienced operating a switchboard,I saw some of the really antique telephones dating back to the 1800s, I’ve learned how panel switches, crossbar switches, and step switches work, experienced rotery dialing, and even got to use a blue box and old pay phones. The volunteers were really nice, and the tour was accessible. They even took us home.

Piciok,

@hmaealdeza Where's that? Wish it was Europe but...

Piciok,

@hmaealdeza Well, hopefully I'll see what Rotterdamm has going for it.

@drew Hello Drew. I hope you're doing fine. Apologies for a professional inquiry on a private profile but I think you might be the best source of the information I need. A friend and I are trying to use the new feature of Whatsapp where the audio of the smartphone can be shared during a screen share session. It doesn't seem to be working for us. We can't hear each other's VoiceOver audio nor the podcast we are trying to play in Safari. Do you know how this feature is supposed to be used? Thanks a lot for your response. All the best!

Piciok,

@drew Not yet. Will do. I simply thought I didn't understand how the feature works.

Piciok,

@drew We have tried both on iOS devices. Apologies for not clarifying this earlier.

Piciok,

@drew That's exactly what we did. Still no dice even with the podcast.

Dla osoby właśnie tracącej wzrok (diagnoza w trakcie) szukam rekomendacji linuksowych aplikacji typu lupa ekranowa, polski porządny screen reader i wtyczek do FF polepszających widzialność.

W przyszłości Jakiś , albo wtyczka do wiadomości głosowych na Friendice.

Anyone?

Piciok,

@8petros Screen Reader to Orca, jeśli do środowisk graficznych.

As I did not manage to snatch any audio of the thing, have some photographic proof...

In an amazing twist of fate, within one evening I have made several calls from an actual, albeit slightly modernized payphone and taken over the first phone number we have owned and consequently I have ever memorized. This GAAD was a good one.

Piciok,

The former would of course not have happened without the support from the excellent Hackerspace in Vienna. Also, I am active again on that old SIP thing of mine for anyone who cares.

Hej. Słuchałby to ktoś?

ps.

#podcast #PolskiPodkast #ambient #muzyka #efekty #natura

Piciok,

"Izabela in the Forest": https://tyflopodcast.net/z-mikrofonem-wsrod-ptakow/

Piciok,

To what degree does NVDA actually have support for TUIs? When I look at TUIs (terminal user interfaces) for tools like Joplin, Vim, practically anything that requires using arrow keys/tab within a terminal, it almost always is a horrible experience. Are there things TUI developers can do to better accommodate NVDA? @NVAccess @tspivey
Do terminal-first tools like TDSR in a WSL2 shell improve this at all? #nvdasr #screenreaders #accessibility

Piciok,

@zersiax @SunDial79 @NVAccess @tspivey At some point I was using a music player whose name evades me now, to arrange playlists on a Linux machine over SSH. I remember setting something in the config so that the cursor always lands in the currently selected line and that seemed to do the trick. Not sure if that helps.

I’ve been wondering why most the AI and non AI powered TTS engines shy away from using breathing when generating speech? Seems like Mac OS’s Alex and ChatGPT’s TTS are the only ones?

Piciok,

@vick21 Some of the Polish RHVoice voices do brathe in for the commas, I believe it could be programmed in while recording.

Hey blind Android users, anyone have a favorite more advanced GPS navigation app?

In particular, I'm looking for something that will let me save my own points and navigate back to them, with both directions and bearing/distance for cases where Google Maps tries to do a dumb and take me along small access roads and such when really I just need to hang a left and walk for about 100 feet, but the app doesn't give me that info because it's too busy holding my hand.

Likely moving to a new area next week, there's a lot of cool stuff to walk to, and I'd like to just mark my building entrance so I can return after exploring things. But so many of the apps I'm finding want to hold my hand more than is necessary, and that sucks.

Piciok,

@nolan Perhaps Dotwalker Pro or Seeing Assistant Move?

Today's shoutout goes out to something my colleague is co-creating with a team of dedicated authors. @techniktagebuch is a blog in German_ where everyday situations concerning technology are captured so that they can be preserved for eternity. Imagine going back twenty years and seeing how technology worked back then based on how it influenced lives of people like you and me. Totally worth translating using your favorite means of getting at content in a foreign language. They also seem to be adding alt-text in their newer posts which is always worthy of a special mention.

It seems there is a fail-safe way to show how much the GPT behind Be My AI can hallucinate - the slips of paper inside fortune cookies. Both a friend and I have had false results with these in two different languages, none of them being English, over a different period of time. Any experiences? And that's my random post for the morning.

This might be a long shot, but is there anyone who managed to go to the ICC camp with some other group since their country wasn't on the eligible list? I tried to contact the camp directly, but the email on their site seems to be invalid, and I'm not really sure what else I can do. Should I just email some other countries whose contacts they listed on the site hoping they would agree to bring me with them? I would really love to go there this year and this is so frustrating.

Piciok,

@Caoimhe @miki I second that, it has happened before that another country took an interested participant. I would start with somewhere close to where you're from to make the logistics possibly simple. I have been told the availability of places is generally limited this year, though, so don't be surprised if it turns out to be hard or impossible. Good luck!

what are fellow podcasters using for cloud recording these days? Cleanfeed is fantastic, but the lack of local recording on interviewee end means that if they don't have superfast connection, the glitches are saved in the cleanfeed recording. How is riverside, which seems to offer local recordings in terms of accessibility?

Piciok,

@jakobrosin Have you played with vdo.ninja? This seems to be able to backup recordings to Google Drive.

Piciok,

@WestphalDenn Meine Empfehlungen: Dotwalker, Seeing Assistant Move, Lazarillo, Walkers Guide

We’ve been floored by everyone’s support for Project Tapestry! Three of the pledge tiers on Kickstarter are already sold out, but there are still several to choose from with rewards ranging from wallpapers to stickers, pins, and even a free year of Wallaroo. At this rate, we’re going to need to come up with some more stretch goals soon! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/iconfactory/project-tapestry

Piciok,

@Iconfactory Hi there! Currently experiencing some issues with backing the project from my iPhone, will try from my PC later during the day. Would you consider supporting Wordpress blogs and comments' discussions within the posts? Would love to receive push notifications under some of them.

Have been playing with Vdo.ninja, a free solution by the dev of OBS Studio which makes it possible to stream and receive multiple sources through any web-based view. In practice, it can do what Cleanfeed does, except it's not as heavily Chrome-dependent, allows for things like changing audio inputs and outputs for other people which makes it so much easier for sound technicians to tweak the setup for radio show or podcast guests, and all of the parameters can be tweaked through URL parameters so it is easy to hand out customized invitation links with everything pre-configured for each guest. The dev, I am told, cares deeply for and, although some suggestions could still be implemented, it is rather pleasant to work with at present. https://vdo.ninja/

Piciok,

@stirlock I am trying to report all accessibility-related findings to the dev as much as my spare time allows. So far we have got ARIA regions for all of the connected streams aka guests, Cleanfeed style. Steve reacts very fast to such reports so it's definitely worth hanging out on the project's Discord server.
