Generalities:

My favorite pastime is learning.

If something is unconventional it's typically better for it.

Music is crucial and experiencing it is mandatory - be it through listening or creating.

Reducing suffering is the best life goal I've come up with.

How much effort do you put in to discovering new music? Is it an active focus for you, or do you let the new stuff find you? Do you not worry about new music at all, and are happy with what you've found already?

How do you discover new stuff (blogs, webzines, playlists, radio, forums, newsletters, independent searching, etc.)? Which ones?

Curious to see the spread of responses on this.

Hello,

I created the community “Japanese Metal” https://sh.itjust.works/c/japanese_metal The problem is, it can’t be found on several other instances. I tried on Lemm.ee and Kbin.social, and both return a “not found”. What’s wrong? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

@Hanabie

I was able to pull it up in a search and just subbed. I saw a tip here earlier to eliminate the initial "!" when searching for a mag and that worked. This was the first time I've been able to do so though after checking back every so often as functionality has been slowly improving.

Don't be discouraged by people saying these protests don't work, or by subreddits going public

People discredit every type of protest, IRL or not. I think back to every major protest that's happened in response to some major event, and the response every time is "That won't ever work", "You're wasting your time", "Imagine caring about that"....

Wouldn't "Fist fight the Mastodon!" be more appropriate in this case?

I adore this collective of musicians. All of their other projects are worth checking out as well.

I nuked and deleted my main account already. I have an alt with zero posting history that I could conceivably use if I wanted to try and get more people to shift away from reddit, but I have no interest in going back for any other type of activity.

I'm pretty open to most genres, though I am pretty particular about what I like. I tend to gravitate toward stuff that's more experimental, but I like plenty of straight forward stuff too. Black metal is my most frequent go to as far as subgenres, but lots of doom, melodic death, gothic, etc., etc. as well.

Some favorites: Dodheimsgard, Ulver, Solefald, Summoning, In the Woods..., Blut Aus Nord, Aura Noir, At the Gates, Taake, Wolves in the Throne Room, Lifelover, and anything Stefan Kozak ever did.

Houtua or Infant Islander?

I dig on Dishammer, and I enjoy Coffins - 'The Other Side of Blasphemy', but don't really feel compelled to go much beyond that. Wish I could get into Oxygen Destroyer just for the aesthetic, but the music doesn't do much for me. There's other stuff we might overlap on, I'm sure.

You get into hardcore at all? I've been spinning the new Gel a lot this year. https://gelhc.bandcamp.com/album/only-constant

Slooooooow and unapologetically dense. I was into it enough that I listened to the whole thing. Thumbs up to your buddy.

So, are we talking like Pig Destroyer and Cephalic Carnage here? What noise rock? Swans, Melt Banana? I need to know!

Alter_Id,

Nothing wrong with knowing what you like. Unless you're actively looking for more and can't find anything I guess.

Alter_Id,

Right on. Looks like I'm seeing lots of love for some abrasive, grimier pockets of existence from who has responded so far. Sludge pit.

Alter_Id,

Excellent. Glad to see some more appreciation for that flavor.

Nice. It took me a wrap my mind around Clutch, but an old drummer of mine just kept on playing them around me until it clicked. I dig the earlier stuff a lot up through Blast Tyrant, then kind of stopped paying attention. I heard their most recent album though and I enjoyed it.

As far as RATM, I see them called out as nu-metal and rock kind of interchangeably depending on who you're talking to. Genre debates can be tiring and I often don't think a concrete answer is necessary or even important sometimes. They're heavy and if you like it... good enough.

Elder rules. I was just recently turned on to them, but I binged their discography pretty much immediately. So good.

Persefone is maybe most in line with what you're describing that I get into, but I dig certain Periphery and Monuments (and some BtBaM as well) albums too. Am I close?

Alter_Id,
Alter_Id avatar

Ah, man, it was a while ago that my brother showed me that Native Construct album (this type of stuff is way more his vibe and where I hear a lot of it). I remember it being good.

Alter_Id,

Soundgarden was the first band that I got really into, like to the point that I went out and bought all their albums.

Alter_Id,

With what I'm familiar with there it looks like you're pretty hard in on symphonic metal, and some of the later stuff goes more into different flavors of folk metal. Not necessary to know that to enjoy it at all, but might be useful if you're ever looking for more in the same vein. Good to see more diversification of tastes popping up in the thread though, for sure.

The new album is so good. Up towards the top of new stuff that's come out this year for me.

Solid album, man. Nice work!

Nuked and deleted my 10 year old account last night, and glad to be rid of it tbh. I'd been wanting a paradigm shift for a while already under whatever circumstance. Quite happy to see the momentum growing for an exodus really.

There are things that I'll remember positively about reddit for sure, but I still look back most fondly to the MySpace days for it's sense of tighter community which is something I never felt through the sea of randoms that flooded reddit. I don't participate on any other major social media sites, though I do have accounts on some individual forums for stuff I'm into. I definitely still have to learn my way around this place a bit. I can't pretend to know how this federated concept will flesh itself out and evolve, but I really think I see some promise for more familiar communities with the way it's structured. We'll see; I'm optimistic.

At any rate, something about how every end is a new beginning or something. If I'm allowed to welcome you though I'm a newborn myself, welcome. Glad we're here.

Alter_Id,
Alter_Id avatar

I hear you on that. If we're taking a step back so as to not continue walking in the wrong direction though it's better in the long run.

Important to note that the benevolence of those working within an otherwise uncaring system isn't lost through abandoning that system. Reddit only helped to facilitate the support that people within your community were willing to give. It wasn't responsible for generating that support itself. There will be plenty of people looking to fill the gap. It probably won't look the same, but hopefully the structure undergirding that support can be more robust and less subject to exploitation for the temporary disruption that's happening now. If this idea of federated social networks takes hold I think that's one thing it's offering.
