How are username collisions handled since there is no centeralized userbase for the fediverse. Or is it just not an issue since the magazines of different instances are disjoined? Sorry I'm trying to figure this out as I assume the majority of us are.
Think like an email address, your username is 34@kbin.social but another user could be 34@fedia.io. This is the same as with an email address where your email is username@provider
I guess that is what I was sort of thinking when I said the Magazines are disjointed. But are they actually disjointed in the sense if there was a AskKbin on a Lemmy instance could I post a comment on the Lemmy magazine article from kbin?
Yes you can! If you see a Lemmy post in your Kbin feed and post a comment, anyone subscribed to that Magazine, regardless of the platform they use, can see it. Conversely, if someone else posts a comment on it, you'll see it in your Kbin feed regardless of the platform they used. This is the beauty of the ActivityPub protocol that all these platforms are using.
so if i want to try out fedia.io or lemmy.world i will have to make a new user account on those sites or can i just use my kbin login?
I tried login in there but it just loaded eternally
KBin is the only site that knows your KBin password, so you won't be able to use it directly to log in elsewhere.
Easiest would be to anonymously visit the other sites and then do a search and subscribe on KBin for the subs you like to bring them into your feed.
I did that to bring my Mastadon stuff in to see if I can use KBin as a pane of glass to see everything or I'm better off just keeping them separate (juries still out, probably need to wait until this server stops getting slammed).
ETA: if someone knows a better way, please correct me! I would love to learn an easier way. So far, I think it's just manual checking and people making lists that they share.
