Yeah, and I can't speak for everyone here, but I didn't even bother trying it even though I was intrigued. It seemed like the kind of thing that could be completely game-changing and I wasn't willing to get hooked on another Googler's pet project that'd just get the axe in a few years. It's a self fulfilling prophecy at this point, nothing new is likely to get any traction because no one wants to run the risk and then Google cancels it. If they were willing to put in writing that they'll support something for x number of years (that's end user facing, not just whatever contracts they make with devs or whatever), it'd probably go a long way, but they're not willing to support an expensive flop if the product is what actually sucks, so, they're not likely to do that.

Hell, even anything older still runs the risk at any time :-\

When I installed fdroid from their website a month or two back it was like 2 or 3 clicks. Then whenever I want to install anything from there it's an extra click or two over what it would be from Play.

I've seen people click through way more complicated processes than this without even knowing they did it. Modern computing has taught people to just keep hitting whatever the approval text is (yes windows, I really do want to copy all of these god damn files. Yes, really, I still do! Yep, again, ALL of them!)

Yeah, it's like the ad supported Kindle's ... I've got one, I've paid attention to literally 0 ads though. I hit the power button and swipe away the 'lock/ad screen' ... it's completely unobtrusive because I have literally not paid attention to 1 single ad and what I have to do to unlock is exactly the same as I'd do with the non-ad-supported version.

The problem is at least with the Kindle, I got something out of it (a kindle at a discount) and I do buy some books through them every now and then, so they don't have an incentive to fuck up the experience for me.
Google on the other hand has every incentive to continue to fuck up the experience. First, it'll be still ads, then videos without sound, then videos with sound, then you won't be able to start your video back up again until the pause ad has finished, etc...

Alabama lawmakers advance bill that could lead to prosecution of librarians (apnews.com)

Alabama lawmakers on Thursday advanced legislation that could see librarians prosecuted under the state’s obscenity law for providing “harmful” materials to minors, the latest in a wave of bills in Republican-led states targeting library content and decisions....

ok, Millennial ... look at you over there ::checks notes:: loving the woman you married! What a disgrace!

Seriously though, best of luck through this and hopefully the 1st Amendment is upheld

ETA: Not sure on your age here, was just a joke to play on the boomer 'wife bad' stereotype that in my experience is way too accurate.

tjhart85,

I'm a millennial that doesn't like avocado at all, so, speaking of disgraces!

We managed to get a house, but there are also 3 of us with no kids, I can't imagine managing with two people in todays economy. We got in just before the rates skyrocketed in 2021, the house price is basically what the inflation calculators say the original owners bought it for decades ago, so, there's that at least, that we only paid the equivalent of the original list price for a 5-6 decades old house with decades of shoddy repairs such as every single plug with a ground having the ground pin tied to the neutral!

It's a real rough time out there right now though with ownership out of the realm of possibility for so many :-\

Regardless of anything else, it's a medical procedure, your employer shouldn't be privy to private medical details just because they don't agree with them. You should be able to get a doctors note that you're having a procedure, will require time to heal and be done with it, in any reasonable world, but ... here we are.

Trump Lawyer Makes Disturbing Immunity Claim Before Supreme Court: Apparently, John Sauer thinks staging a coup should be considered a presidential act (newrepublic.com)

Donald Trump’s lawyer pushed an outrageous line of thinking on Thursday during oral arguments at the Supreme Court over whether the former president has immunity for trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election: that a U.S. president could order a military coup d’état with almost no chance of repercussions....

As far as I can tell, Lori is just some rando who threw their opinion up on the most basic website I have seen in at least 20 years. They aren't a journalist from what I can see. Their site doesn't have ads. Why in the ever loving fuck would they make something click baity when they didn't really expect anyone to click it and seemingly aren't monetizing it?

It's just some rando who threw their thoughts up and then had them completely reinforced by a shitty CEO sealion-ing them.

What happened to "stoner" comedies?

Half-Baked. Happy Gilmore. Billy Madison. Grandma’s Boy. Dude, Where’s My Car? Where have the movies like this gone? Clerks 3 was, I think, the last good one I’ve ever seen (and even they got too real and too sad so I don’t even know if I ever want to see it again as a comedy). There’s gotta be some good, funny shit...

tjhart85,
tjhart85 avatar

Right‽

The movie was unbelievably dumb and personally I loved it! Dunno what that guy wanted/expected out of the movie, but I feel like it delivered on what the title promised me

Floppy emulators for old hardware are a thing too ... I think the larger risk is just that the hardware is ancient and it's better to plan to replace it as just part of a plan rather than wait for it to become an emergency replacement instead that'll cost a ton more to do in a hurry.

We're a non-iPhone household and went with the AppleTV when my Nvidia SHIELD died.

Ads were getting put on the SHIELD and I definitely didn't want to buy another one because of that and it has been a while since its had a refresh, so went with an AppleTV instead.

The device itself is fantastic, the UI is so smooth and so much nicer. OTOH, I miss being able to cast to the TV more than I expected. It works decently with the Macbooks though (we're a weird household ... like Macs, hate iPhones).

So ... if ya'll have iPhones or don't care about casting, I'd definitely recommend an AppleTV with Plex (the Dropout, Youtube, Disney+ apps are all good too).

ETA: Apple is also making some pretty awesome TV content as well and IIRC you'll get a couple months free with the purchase ... verify that yourself though in case they've removed it, but Foundation, Severance & See are fantastic shows if you're looking for something to watch.

tjhart85,

You specifically said you use a 3rd party launcher. You know why you specifically mentioned that.

tjhart85,
tjhart85 avatar

My SHIELD would just randomly restart itself until eventually it stopped coming back online.

I definitely got my monies worth out of it, but didn't like that a device with no ads all of a sudden became a device with ads (and this is a Google thing not an Nvidia one, but still)

tjhart85,
tjhart85 avatar

Yeah I used to have a PC and a Harmony remote that would send macros to a custom script and Kodi would do different things or it could switch to Netflix and ... Like, we just want to watch a movie or TV show not have to perform tech support whenever Netflix changed their webpage!

tjhart85,
tjhart85 avatar

Ah, my apologies for the assumption, it's been almost a year but I'm still too used to Reddit apparently!

Yes, the default launcher had ads, the SHIELD itself didn't, but I also didn't like any of the 3rd party launchers I used but I don't remember specifically why. Then, the SHIELD stopped booting so I didn't want to buy another one and went with the ATV instead.

As I mentioned, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to someone who knows they'd regret not having the cast functionality, but, if you just want a device that works very well and doesn't ever have so much as a hiccup during navigation, it's been great!

I would still recommend the SHIELD for someone that wants cast or who wouldn't have a problem with (mostly) relevant ads being shown on the device (stock).

Conversely, maybe she thinks there will be MORE opportunity for $200k speeches if Trump wins!

Dishwashers are a luxury, but they also use a LOT less water than you'll use manually washing dishes and (as long as you clean their filters and use the right detergent) generally do about as well as a bored person doing the dishes will do (ie every now and then you'll find one with gunk but not too frequently).

Personally, my household has 3 adults and I would go for the full size dishwasher and figure something else out for storage ... It's also possible the smaller ones might be perfect for baking sheets and whatnot. If you haven't, try to do a mock layout with painters/masking tape and see what you can make fit in that space to try and help with planning, if you can.

With all that said, worst case scenario if no one wants to manually wash dishes, you have to run it twice in one day, every now and then, which doesn't seem horrible.

Edit: Jesus Christ, people. If you buy a $150 Thinkpad made by slave labor instead of a $1,200 MacBook made by slave labor, you’re still supporting a capitalist economy based on slave labor. We all do. We have no choice. The number of smug liberals in the comments saying “well I buy a cheap used laptop” or “well I buy...

tjhart85,
tjhart85 avatar

Yup, my last 2 MBP laptops have been from a junk pile and came to me free/cheap from a buddy who was able to grab a bunch.

All in all, everything I do on a laptop is in a webui, a terminal or within a remote VM so I mostly dgaf about what it can natively run, but the hardware is great and it can load the nix (and brew) package managers, so I really haven't found much that I want it to do that it can't. Hell, even games I can just Steam Link to another machine and play if I want.

My last job was disposing of a 2021 model and I was dumb enough to ask if I could have it rather than just taking it and got told no ... Sold for scrap by the pound! I could have left a 10$ bill in it's place and theyd have gotten more profit, fucking ridiculous.

Lol, even the "if legal tender is refused" concepts are for debts and not just things you want!

Like, if they're refusing to take his money after he ate food at a restaurant, he's got a bit of a point, but if he's in the grocery store and walked out with shit, they refused a customer not a debt!
