dipbeneaththelasers,

I'll be staying here. I'm no longer interested in supporting Reddit, and more importantly I like it here.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

"No longer interested in supporting Reddit" is a great way to put it.

jclinares,

I have to go back tomorrow, because I need to see the state of the subreddit I moderate, and see if they want to continue the blackout indefinitely. But I've pretty much made peace with the fact that I'll be deleting my Reddit account at the end of the month.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

Yes it'll be interesting to see which subreddits continue the blackout or not. But like you I'll be deleting my account at the end of the month as well.

Alter_Id,
Alter_Id avatar

I nuked and deleted my main account already. I have an alt with zero posting history that I could conceivably use if I wanted to try and get more people to shift away from reddit, but I have no interest in going back for any other type of activity.

100%

It's brilliant now we have viable alternatives we can build on after all the shit they've pulled over the years.

Andalusian_dawn, (edited )

I kind of like kbin because of the familiar layout, but I just don't really understand how to use lemmy, even with reading the instructions. I expect to probably stay here more and more once the cloudflare debacle gets situated and phase out my reddit usage over time.

I mod on an smaller medium subreddit (100k+) that didn't go private, so I will probably open a magazine here for it, although I am getting tired of modding...it's been almost 4 years modding, 8 years on reddit.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

Over ten years on Reddit and I never was tempted to be a moderator, always seemed a thankless job.

I'm in the same boat as you, still figuring this whole thing out. But it's starting to feel like this Lemmy thing could be the future for Reddit-type websites.

lastrogue,

If Lemmy and Kbin could get together and have some kind of combined offspring, that would be good I think. I know they are both a part of the fediverse, but interacting between the two is problematic at best.

Lemmy is still using websocket vs REST API, and is pretty buggy, even on the less populated instances. It has potential and they are making progress though.

Lells,
Lells avatar

We're kind of "here at the beginning" right now, I think it's exciting :) I've been looking into the kbin code for a bit now, may look at Lemmy as well then, as I code websockets professionally. I'm liking this whole fediverse idea.

mattrussell2319,
mattrussell2319 avatar

Kbin federation to Lemmy is off right now because of the Cloudflare thing but it should be temporary

b_crussin,

I swore to myself I would never use the official app again, so it looks like I’ll be following kbin’s development for a while

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

I remember using that app at some stage or another and just getting spammed with useless push notifications even after I turned them off. Promptly uninstalled it.

Don't know if that's changed, but doesnt seem that way based on what i've read.

Ignacio,
Ignacio avatar

I'm in the fediverse since April 2022, but not at my full time. Thanks to spez, I'm in full time.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

Must be exciting for someone who's been in over a year seeing it take off like it has.

Ignacio,

For me, it's most exciting seeing other places falling apart because of their CEOs screwing everything up (Musk, u/spez, Zuckerberg).

UpChuck,

I'm not going back to reddit, except to delete my shit. I like the 3 alternate sites I've signed up for so far, and I'll be sticking with them and not reddit.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

I like it here too. I'm still figuring out the whole Lemmy-verse thing, but I definitely like the idea of it rather than some of the other Reddit alternatives which are seemingly more centralised.

AdmiralSnackbar,
AdmiralSnackbar avatar

Would it be in poor taste to steal posts from reddit and post them here? That would be the only reason I go back.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

No. I actually think it'd be a great project and help fill out a lot of the communities here and elsewhere on Lemmy.

It would help fill them with content and act as a draw for people I think.

One of the things that made the Reddit experience good was finding random communities you'd never heard of, and sorting by top posts of all time.

Though I suppose it contributed to my doom scroll habits... haha

Nepenthe,
Nepenthe avatar

Only downside is, a lot of the ones I frequented were geared towards OC content. I'm not just gonna steal someone's work just because I really want m/macrophotography to take off, for instance, and it's not something I see myself having the time and stubbornness to ask permission of when the users are in the thousands and may have gone ghost five years ago for all I know. So my hands feel tied there.

lastrogue,
lastrogue avatar

I deleted my account already. posts are left behind but if anything some of them are technical related to problems I asked about or helped solve and may help someone. So I'll leave them be.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

Good idea, I'd been thinking about just nuking my own account but that's food for thought.

I was ready to jump ship already, but spez's comments in that internal letter really sealed the deal. Honestly Christian said it best, even Twitch, which has been making some pretty crazy decisions lately, has listened to the loudest of the complaints against them and made minor adjustments to their strategy. spez, and by extension reddit, clearly feels their position is too strong to bother caring about the concerns of their community.

i made the decision 10+ years ago to never use amazon again. it's been tough finding alternatives in some cases, but i'll live without reddit just like i've lived without amazon.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

I was honestly surprised that Twitch changed course like that, even in a minor way. Though that's not a community I know a lot about.

I'd been ready for a long time too, I'm really glad we now have some great alternatives.

JoeLaffingMatter,

Possibly? Still looking for a good alternative. Kbin is the first one I signed up for.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

Me too, I've been enjoying it though. There's some others but I like the idea of Lemmy so I think I'll be sticking around here or somewhere else connected to it.

PFShady,

I was telling myself I needed to cut back on Reddit. While this isn’t a full social media stop, I won’t be going back to Reddit.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

It's only after I gave it up I saw the hold it had on me. I removed the Sync icon from my home screen and have found myself instinctively tapping the blank spot where it used to be.

trivialnicesuit,

I love the idea of kicking Reddit and staying here but the huge userbase and subreddits get me information I need quickly. It’s hard to leave a place that provides such quick and helpful resources. I don’t want to use it, but it still serves a purpose well. I would love if this place got that sort of traffic.

thesingingcrow,

I agree. I'll still allow myself to plunder Reddit's knowledge. But the nights of doom-scrolling crap are over.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

That's the aspect of Reddit I will miss. Here's hoping we can build something like kbin up to that eventually.

Lilkev,

Definitely stay in the fediverse. The only thing I'm missing is the porn subreddits I used to follow. Any recommended magazines or other instances for this?

scabrous-leper,

@Lilkev ME TOO! I'm staying here, and intend to help build up the NSFW universe here...

If you build it they will cum.

tal,

Note -- if you are not aware of this -- that kbin apparently defaults to hiding adult content.

In your Settings, in the general tab, in the Appearance section, you'll want to uncheck "Hide adult content" if you haven't already.

Lilkev,
Lilkev avatar

Yep, I've already done this. There's just not as much content or niche magazines at the moment. I'm sure they will come with time.

Spaceman2901,

As long as there are mods “on strike”, as it were, I’m not crossing the picket line.

aughisky,
aughisky avatar

I hope the "strike", doesn't end and the mods and power users find their way here.
