Rasta,

Happy to all you who celebrate it.

I'm watching the moon, and I'd be shooting photos, but for the low-hanging fog.

It's still dark so there's no progress I can make on repair work (outstanding since the hurricane of 2022, insurance claim time has run out, the contractors never came.

I've, unwillingly, stepped up to the plate.

What am I going to do, when I finish every series of ? I'm the only one, my wife won't watch it....

Happy Caturday, Rasta! 🐈‍⬛✨✨
Enjoy your weekend❣️

Rasta,

@mikako6 good evening, how have you been?
I'm busy all the time now, I look forward to winter for the rest. I think I gained 5 pounds back though, now that I am doing lighter work

mikako6,
@mikako6@fedibird.com avatar

@Rasta

That's good! 😊✨🍀
It is almost autumn in Japan.
The mornings and evenings are cool and comfortable, but the daytime is still mid-summer heat.
Have a relaxing Saturday and don't work too much!

Rasta,

@mikako6 much like our temperature, and Fall conditions. The blackflies came back though. They are miserable to work around, they are lazy buggers, always sitting around sucking blood, when there's work to be done 😂

mikako6,
@mikako6@fedibird.com avatar

@Rasta

Blood-sucking creatures are tough, aren't they? 😂
I've been bitten on the leg by ticks, stung by caterpillars, and attacked by all sorts of little critters this summer.
It was painful and itchy! Aha ha!
You should be careful too! 😆

Rasta,

@mikako6 I'm a bug magnet. I have to tuck my pant legs in my socks in the produce section of the store LOL

mikako6,
@mikako6@fedibird.com avatar

@Rasta

Aha ha!! 😂🙌🙌
That's a good idea.
I'll follow your example and put my pants inside my socks when I go outside!✌️

Rasta,

@mikako6 I'm always concerned about ticks, so I don't mind wearing my socks over my pants all the time. I just scream, THE FLOOD IS COMING, and I'm old enough people just ignore me LOL

LesterHammerer,

@mikako6 @Rasta I do that for protection against ticks

Rasta,

@LesterHammerer @mikako6 Mostly deer ticks are the risk but I wear a mask for Luna TIcks too

Rasta,

I've never subscribed to a service. I'm not even being frugal (but should be), I just can't justify paying for TV shows I don't have time to watch.

Long ago children, we had something called CABLE TV, and you could watch TV shows in Detroit! It costs a lot for a subscription to 20 channels, 10 intentionally bundled, that you won't watch. I tried Sat Dish, but it used to annoy me, that I paid $70 for Cable, and my wife watched only one channel, the local over-the-air channel?

Rasta,

Naturally, I , but it was because the cable company was misleading me, not because they overcharged me. They kept converting a few channels a week to digital, claiming I needed a digital box to view? Rent a box for the bedroom, and office TVs?
I saved a bundle, without the Gecko.
Cable company lied. It's a descrambler/digital box.

I saved so much eventually being smarter about my entertainment choices, that I was able get 12x the speed at two locations, with money left for Netflix

Rasta,

And OTA (Over The Air) TV still exists. Modern TVs don't come with Rabbit Ears (google it) anymore, so you'll have to buy one somewhere else.
Because Digital signals are weaker, we don't get them outside the city. Most people gave up their floor model TVs in 2010 when it switched to digital.
So, in the city, I get 3 local channels (FREE) and can stream anything. The same things I stream in the city, can be watched wherever I have internet (here) so, now all we need is content?

Rasta,

I should have warned you this would be a rant? LOL
So, there was CRACKLE (even came built-in to the Smart TV) but was dropped in Canada. Still free sources, YouTube (except for the ads), GlobalTV, TubiTV, etc.

Local one channel I manage to pull in over the air, my wife watches. She has never pulled up the streaming services to pick something else. So, if I had gotten in on Netflix, again, it would just sit there, unused, like cable.

Back to series, Shameless. It's hard to make out

Rasta,

But it's exactly like some British Pubs I remember, add some slur to the local British dialect and everyone sounds like they are speaking a foreign language.

I spent 29 days in Plymouth, we'd all started speaking Queen's English by then.

Many good shows never played in North America, let alone Canada. Until grey-box Sat Dishes and Internet Streaming.
My wife and I got into binge-watching Australian Cop shows, and we were starting to talk like them!
BOOT = Car Trunk
Wellies - Rubber Boots

Rasta,

I haven't had time to watch TV, since I am working all daylight hours and I'm too tired to watch TV afterwards, I stream a few episodes while waiting for the sunrise.

I think that's where I was going with this rant? That I might watch a little Shameless until the sun comes up, and I'm wondering how long until the series ends?

ON WITH THE SHOW, THIS IS IT!

@Rasta
Happy Caturday, nice to meet you 👋😃
I read your toot with great interest.

You must miss your wife living with you and not being able to watch your favourite drama with you 😢

Shameless is also my favourite drama, and although I have seen both the original UK and US versions, no one close to me has ever watched it with me.

I know you have a busy life, but I hope you enjoy Shameless as much as I do. I pray for you from afar 🙏

Rasta,

@capla why thank you, and I found another friend who also loves shameless, but it's not for everyone. I'm sure I'll miss it when I finish all episodes

capla,
@capla@mstdn.jp avatar

@Rasta
Yes, it's not for everyone, in Japan, only US S1-5 are available on Netflix right now 😅The other stories can only be bought on DVD.

But Japanese houses are small, so if you buy DVDs, you have to think about whether you want to play them or not, because you can't find a place to put them or put them away.

I can really sympathise with the fact that there is no way to watch it again, even if you want to.

My English communication is poor, but please keep in touch with me 😉

Rasta,

@capla Your English is very good, you are easy to understand. I know about space, I was a DJ for decades, and each music CD takes up space, and I had thousands of them to transport. They were taken out of bulky cases and put in CD Wallets as soon as they were purchased.
Anything I want to save, to use again later, I put on hard drive. I've converted everything to portable, with or without internet access.

capla,
@capla@mstdn.jp avatar

@Rasta
Hello 👋😃Thank you for your reply.
I like your idea of using a CD wallet, but carrying thousands of CDs must be hard.

Music CDs are allowed to be copied, but drama DVDs are illegal to copy, so they can’t be made portable in the same way😞

Internet streaming is convenient, but I wish people could have easier access to a wider variety of works.

It is a pity that I can't watch it in the country or region where I live, even if I have reached the webpage…

Have a nice weekend!

Rasta,

@capla actually, no copying is legal in North America and places licensed for music.
I questioned the regulators about copying what I own and it still wasn't legal. When I switched from records to tapes, I could not just record them, I Had to rebuy them in cassette form, and later, again in CD form COPYWRITE appears for any owned creation books, music and movies.

capla,
@capla@mstdn.jp avatar

@Rasta
It's illegal to copy music CDs in North America😱
You must have gone to a lot of effort and trouble.

In Japan, it is legal only to copy music CDs that you have bought yourself for enjoyment within a limited range, such as yourself and your family.

However, CDs have already become a collector's item and I mostly listen to them on the amazon service😅

If you have any recommendations for music, please let me know anytime📻🎶

Rasta,

@capla Because I was a DJ, I can play music to suit any crowd. Any age, style, or ethnic group. With some variations, they all end up the same, with people dancing, so for the last few decades, all I have focused on, was dance music. Not club music, music you dance to. I love Bob Marley, but I never played it as a DJ. That's my music, not the music the client paid to dance to, and it's not dance music. Sometimes people dance to country music. I have that too. All types, all years from 1930s

Rasta,

@capla Just where I am now, daily, I listen to music. After normal people are awake, I play my music to hear anywhere on my property, more than an acre in size, and the music can be heard for a mile, or more, across the ocean. But respectful times, and I will take requests. But today, I went through 1950-1990s music, and all the neighbours did too 😎 because my speakers are huge, and PRO and I'm kind enough to let them hear their TV too LOL

capla,
@capla@mstdn.jp avatar

@Rasta
In Canada, Japan or anywhere else, the police take fines from where it is easy to get them.

Your friend was unlucky, there are probably worse people out there. 🤷‍♀

If it can only be heard a mile away😅it doesn't seem to reach my ears,

I like New Orleans funk, Punk and Alternative Rock, but I'll listen to any genre of good music 😉 Your neighbours are lucky!

Rasta,

@capla I like some of those choices, I still think about dance beats, I like Reggae, World music in general, Rock, RnB/Soul, very little Rap or Hip-hop, if they have explicit content warnings, and can't play on public radio, then I don't bother listening to it anyway

I follow pop music up to about 2010, and since then, I only listen to the music I gave up to DJ other music

capla,
@capla@mstdn.jp avatar

@Rasta
You prefer popular and danceable music. I like that kind of music too.

You know a lot about music and you've also worked as a DJ. That's great 😃👍

I don't know much about music, so it would be great to learn a lot from you!

I don't know how to listen to Soundcloud... 🤷‍♀ Just what I'm listening to now is this (the one in the image),

Sunday in Japan will be over in less than 10 minutes, good night 💤

Rasta,

@capla I was outside working, from dawn to dusk. I missed your good night, so I'll bid you a good morning. We should be 12 hours apart. I don't use SoundCloud, but the song trivia does.

I am not good at geography and had never thought about the time difference between Canada and Japan!

Thanks for telling me 😊 It’s just about half a day. How is your morning going?

I was able to play the video you introduced, it’s exactly what I was listening to before going to bed!

You work hard, but I have dysautonomia and agoraphobia, so I sleep at home a lot, I live like a feeble cat😿

So I enjoy watching your discoveries through the screen✨

I hope you have a great day 👐

Rasta,

@capla ah, that's different, we have such a law in Canada.. Personal use. We used to record from radio stations, to get our favorite songs. But, Because I was a DJ Business, everything had to be owned, and able to prove ownership. The music police did spot-check me once, and checked every CD to be sure they were originals, nothing downloaded, nothing copied, and they never bothered me again. They caught a friend playing a tape, fined him, and kept spot-checking him after that to fine him again

raymierussell,

@Rasta
I stopped paying my UK TV license about 3 years ago as I was watching almost no live TV. You need a license to watch ANY live TV channel or the BBC catch-up service iPlayer. All the other main UK catch-up services include ads so you can watch them sans licence. ITV(and STV, in my area), channel 4, channel 5 and UKTV Play (covering 4 digital channels) all have comprehensive catch-up services.

Rasta,

@raymierussell I'm located about 100 miles from the city. Before 2010, we had a roof antenna that brought in 3 analog channels. Cable services never reached us. When they went digital, there was no other option to replace it. We lost local news, and all programming. Everyone got a dish. I watched downloaded movies until the Internet rolled down the highway a few years ago. I needed internet anyway, and I have access to everything, even telephone, since digital cellular also doesn't reach us

raymierussell,
@raymierussell@mastodon.scot avatar

@Rasta
I am well within range of the main transmitter. Currently the digital terrestrial service which delivers free to view (if you have a license) channels has about 80 TV channels.
I also got rid of my fibre internet and replaced it with cellular internet. It's is slower but very usable as I am the only person in the household but it a about a third of the cost.
It is not a dedicated internet service but a SIM that has unlimited data, mins and text. It is in a basic 4g router I purchased.

Rasta,

@raymierussell
I'm a power-PC user, glued to a desk over winter. I have to use laptops or mobile phone over the summer months (now)
I need good internet but lately, without power during hurricane, I used my cellular data, and for the things I do most (textual social media) I don't use a fraction of the basic 5gb with my phone. My phone costs $25 a month with 5gb data. My internet costs $128 in one home (No competition) and $68 in my city home. 100mbs.

raymierussell,
@raymierussell@mastodon.scot avatar

@Rasta
With those mobile prices I hope it includes your device. I am SIM.only.
I get unlimited data, text and mins for £18 GBP and my 2nd actual phone SIM is £7.30 GBP for 8GB data with unlimited min and text. Those are rock bottom prices and you can pay much more with other providers. I use one of the big networks MVNO's. After I switched from the big network to their MVNO I still get the same signal etc. but a 40% cost reduction. Also no min contract and the price hasn't risen in 3 years.

Rasta,

@raymierussell our big names are crooks. They won't put cellular towers where they're required. They won't put in fiber unless the government pays for it, even though they reap 1.6 billion profit a year. They don't want to spend it on themselves and their infrastructure. Our internet prices and our Cellular prices are the highest in the world. We have three major players, and each of them have three smaller own companies to fake competition

raymierussell,
@raymierussell@mastodon.scot avatar

@Rasta
Oooft that sound sub-optimal ;-)
In the UK there are 4 networks but 2 are in the process of waiting for the regulator to allow them to merge.
With broadband it is a bit complicated. There is Virgin media who own and run there own cable network/fibre/telephone and merged with one the big mobile phone networks. They are available in under half of homes but have been on a big expansion kick. (1/2)

raymierussell,
@raymierussell@mastodon.scot avatar

@Rasta
British Telecoms have a network called Openreach. British Telecom still operates as a telco and are merged with one of the big mobile networks but Openreach although owned by them is independently operated. They must give equal access and wholesale prices to competitors. It is getting more complicated as some competitors have started building extra network stuff on the back of Openreach. If you have a 'BT' (land)line you can choose from lots of providers.

Rasta,

@raymierussell We can pay anyone we like, for any kind of services. The money still goes in the same pockets and there's still no service

raymierussell,
@raymierussell@mastodon.scot avatar

@Rasta
If I was still with my Fibre company it would be about £50gbp for 100mbs. You can get cheaper promo deals for 18-24month but they rise sharply after the promo deal. It is quite difficult to get vanilla broadband deal at speed x. They all want to upsell Streaming services, landlines, mobile phones etc as bundle.

Rasta,

@raymierussell I'm not even on a contract for anything? Just turned out by accident, the more you look, the more you don't need the big ones.

Lstn2urmama,

@Rasta ..I have digital antennas and get 6 and 7 channels depends on which floor ...

Rasta,

@Lstn2urmama there's no need for digital antenna, people get duped into paying for something a coat hanger would do. Rabbit ears will pick up digital TV in the city, but not any distance, I have a tiny antenna on a pole, directional, and get one channel only

Lstn2urmama,

@Rasta maybe there but here was an essential thing to have and even have a booster...

Rasta,

@Lstn2urmama oh, the booster is essential. Digital is weak, that's how we all lost TV rural, in the city, it just switched to digital and your channel went from 8 to 48.8 or something, but exactly the same. Rural, TV stopped and you could pick up a large screen floor model for $20 at a yard sale.
I know how to get TV, they don't. If you're still using Analog, get a converter, I simply bought cheap digital TVs to replace them, and an antenna, and point it around, and tune it

Lstn2urmama,

@Rasta ..we have had a complete removal of air space changed and why nothing old will work ... still have 2 older sets one black and white and one newer color sits in my closet from many years ago..

Rasta,

@Lstn2urmama I had a black and white in the garage, the picture was too scrambled without an antenna but I could hear it, so I put it on for news. Eventually, I threw it out. We had analog signals from one rural tower but it was a long way from us. But analog signals go much further than digital, I got Cellphone 60 miles at sea, now I can't get it 20 miles from a tower

Lstn2urmama,

@Rasta ,the Philips black and white is from the 70's and can be be watched in the car.. it was something different back then and has a black screen cover to no shadows ...

Lstn2urmama,

@Rasta tried cable once and did not want to watch same show 6 times or any other multiple.. always do antenna TV...

Rasta,

@Lstn2urmama I had three over the air channels, and my wife watched only one, and we paid $70 for cable channels, to watch just one, over the air? She wants what she won't watch, and she thinks the pre-news hour is news

Lstn2urmama,

@Rasta since getting very ill and the need to function mind more , barely opened one set and other died ..all new ones still in boxes for last few years...
