BREAKING: Huge crowds gather at Finland’s capital Helsinki to demand the resignation of in the cabinet.

Stoat,

@gimulnautti

Scene is outdoors with stone buildings in the background, a few tall green trees either side. Public area with hedges and grass on the right side leading up to a bigger stone building. Hundreds of people, some with banners. The sky is greyish and cloudy with a bit of sun breaking through.

@darwinwoodka By the end of the day it was estimated about 5000 people attended.

andrewporter,

@gimulnautti This is one of the challenges of a PR electoral system - those with repulsive ideologies are represented in government. While better than the FPTP alternatives, it does beg the question how to deal with these types when they are in parliament?

@andrewporter I think we are seeing the same issue as with the Weimar republic of Germany: The TF party only got 20% of the vote, just like the nazis didn’t win in 1933.

But it’s the economic right that lifted them to power by entering into government with them, thinking ”it can use them” to further their cuts and austerity.

Ignorance & greed. Ignoring their ability to change the political scene by poisoning the well of democracy from below was the fatal mistake. We must stay vigilant

andrewporter,

@gimulnautti So true.

Democracy is a fragile entity which needs to be nurtured. The challenge is how to reconcile people with such opposing views.

@andrewporter In fact Daniel Görtz made a fantastic statement about how is actually very easy for us, because: ”while it doesn’t make people happier, it enfuses them with a profound sense of meaning.”

And statistics from the election seem to support this. Mostly well-off men voted for the racist candidates. They ”got it covered” in the happiness department but are lacking in meaning or feel threatened in their purpose.

Fascinating talk: https://youtu.be/ljDO6HhrnBo?t=1h06m08s

andrewporter,

@gimulnautti
You touch on a good explanation on why people move towards extremist ideology, but I think there are a different motivations depending on the life, experience and position for each individual.

For example, they may appeal to simple answers to complex questions that don’t really have answers; or perhaps a desire to not have to think and reason; or an
appeal for a certain order in society.

Each person is different.

Looks like an interesting video.

@andrewporter There’s never a simple explanation, as individuals never conform to greater movements yet the stories those movements tell still shape everything whether we like it or not.

We are a story-telling animal. That is where our great power ultimately comes from.

Finnish public broadcasting corp estimates ” thousands” of people on about a week’s notice. Do note that this is actually quite a lot, for Helsinki only boasts about 600k inhabitants in the city and 1,2M with the neighboring cities included.

”The government, blue and black, does not have our back!”, chanted some of the demonstrators.
