This is why you use Sharkey and not Mastodon. You won't get these strange sports betting users trying to sign up for your instance just to advertise their betting site.

@yon@chikorita157 A lot of these spammers are just big-number games. If they get 1 hit in 5k spam messages, that's a win because the cost to generate that 5k is pretty low.
I suspect they're only targeting the mastodon side because they make the same mistake as most laypeople in assuming that "fediverse == Mastodon". That, and the Mastodon API has a lot of client-code already written for it.
I would also scrutinize accounts with 88 in them. That's a dogwhistle number for the nazi-types 😒 Probably unrelated to the SE Asia case though.
And Pixilfed is not big fish. I left one instance because of the feed starting to be more and more testimonials to the wonders of betting on some site or other.
Poor moderation. An easy target is more important than big.
