theragu40,

If Biden goes hard on the indictments it will simply make Hunter Biden the primary attack target of Trump. They will absolutely fight fire with fire.

If he instead focuses on issues (where he can soundly beat Trump already), then he might avoid that mud slinging battle a bit, which is good for him personally and for the Democrats as a whole.

I hope so! I am hoping Trump once again drives out more people to vote against him because they can’t stand him. I can’t imagine another Trump presidency - it would be too horrible lol

Given that Special Counsel Jack Smith is asking for a Jan 2nd 2024 trail date, it's looking promising that the trail concerning Trumps effort to overturn the 2020 election will have concluded by the time we are casting votes in November 2024.

I know Trump has a pretty fanatical base, but Republicans still need to appeal to a respectable amount of moderates to stand a chance. And odds are looking decent that Trump will be a federal convict, something that I'm sure will be total repellant for said moderates.

Not to mention that Dems should have some really solid issues to campaign on. For instance, if they focus on enshrining abortion rights, that should help to secure some swing states. The most recent result in Ohio is promising in that regard.

I could go on, but I think Biden's strategy is sound so far. He has some really great stuff that he can focus on other than Trumps crimes. And hopefully some of those crimes will be addressed by the time the general election kicks off anyway.

I completely agree! I am also hoping that the January 2nd trial sinks Trump's entire ship, and I really hope it's not wishful thinking - he has never faced justice in his entire life. I really hope he does not find a way to weasel out of it, becuase then he will use it to fuel his entire campaign.

My main worry about his fanatical base is their propensity for violence. Too many of them are eager to create instability if they don't get their way.

Any thoughts on this strategy?

I think it could play out well - if Biden talks about Trunp's indictments too much, it could play into Trump's claim that all of it was orchestrated by the "deep state." Trump's indictments will get undoubtedly get insane amounts of coverage anyway.

It also draws another contrast between Biden & Trump - whereas Biden avoids commenting on Trump's indictments, Trump spends all day criticizing Hunter Biden.

“A story too big to ignore”

Honestly I don’t think it matters what Biden does.

Everyone will know the next election will be voting to put Trump in jail or voting to keep him out of jail.

You’re going to get intense voter participation simply because of it.

Democrats have wanted trump to face any consequences for 8 years, let’s see if they back it up.

True. The next election will be about whether or not Trump is guilty.

I find it sad, really, that the last two election cycles (and now 2024) have revolved around one man. He is truly one of the most destructive forces in American politics.

nbafantest,

My friend, you have brought new life to this little community and I hope you keep it up.

I’m rather enjoying your posts so far

Lol thanks! I am trying to keep interesting content flowing! At least one or two posts a day.

It’s frustrating though because kbin and lemmy have different sorting algorithms. Kbin relies on boosts, whereas lemmy is just upvotes. I also have no idea what the required critical mass would be to get good engagement.

It’s ironic, really, because I lurked on reddit for more than 10 years and never once posted or commented. Now, I’m the one try to get the lurkers to come out and post.

@CoffeeAddict yeah I think it's the right strategy, no need to give Trump any more free publicity. There are so many wins from this cycle, especially given the hardships, that a positive story that explains why those changes were good for nearly every American could be powerful on its own without needing to bring up the other side, though I imagine the loss of freedoms and privacy in red states will get highlighted. I'm sure the PACs will make the issue blatant once we're past the GOP primary.

@Neblib Replying to this from kbin.social

Exactly! Biden might not have to waste much of his energy pointing out Trump’s legal problems, and he can instead point out the republicans other failings.
