How did I spend my morning? Since I'm in a "distro testing" mood, #nixos was running my CPU and GPU fans low (current guess), so my thermals were warmer than expected. I wondered if another distro would result in the same thing. Installed #popos for fun, half of everything locked up and I had to force quit, even to install a font! Installed Arch again and will be testing thermals shortly. More thoughts later...
I got a little busy with work and left Doom Eternal running. Sure enough, fans are spinning fairly high but the heat is about the same. Going to install mangohud, radeon-profile, and some other sensor related things to keep an eye on this because this freaks me out a little.
Got MangoHud installed and configured very easily. If I just run the main menu in Doom Eternal for 5 minutes, I'm getting at highest point 75C on the GPU and 63C on the CPU. In game, highest point is 80C on the GPU and 73C on the CPU.
I need to compare and see if this is "normal"; I may be worried for nothing lol.
@teamtuck That sounds normal to me. Have you checked the fan curves in BIOS?
Also I wanna add that I had a gaming laptop that would constantly hit 95C or higher and I would play for hours every day on it. The heat never damaged anything, I used it for over 7 years until it was just too old for me. I'm not sure how much heat really affects lifespan of components.
@teamtuck only thing I can guess with Pop is it will index your storage for their launcher to give search results. That indexing process can be taxing. I doubt fan speed control would differ greatly across distros.
Also my Sony #headphones appears to have a short in it. I tried multiple sources, multiple cables, but sound only plays on one side. If I plug in my "emergency" earbuds, it's just fine. Emergency earbuds it is...
