susurros,

While the U.S. is trying to spin its abstention, rather than veto, of the UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza as not representing a shift in policy, it most certainly is.

Of course, this is not the result of some change of heart by the U.S. regime, but rather due to the relentless efforts of innumerable folks around the country to lift up the Palestinian cause, to demand an immediate ceasefire, and to demonstrate the political cost to those in charge of continuing with the status quo.

It is disheartening beyond belief that the notion of opposing genocide should require such mobilization, but such are the fascistic times we live in. And while a victory, it is not time to let up the pressure. Nonetheless, much love to those organizing and mobilizing and acting for Palestinian liberation in whatever ways you are able.

@susurros @palestine Point worth noting: Biden apparently is responsive to pressure from his own party. Trump is not. So these people who think it doesn't matter who's president are demonstrably wrong.

Out of curiosity, does the resolution also include a call for Hamas to ceasefire? 🤔

oatmeal,

@paninid

That’s the definition of ceasefire.
Also, the resolution is about the people of Gaza, not the Hamas. The only ones talking about g about the Hamas after 5 months of indiscriminate killing of civilians are the ones who want it to continue. It’s two separate issues.

I think Likud are the intellectual heirs of Kahanists and they have a symbiotic relationship with Hamas.

Both serve to push their domestic populations further into deranged messianic, nihilistic visions.

A ceasefire that does not involve regime change for both seems…short-sighted, no?

oatmeal,

@paninid it was not always the case but the Likud and Otzma Yehudit (the new Khaneist part) are basically one (they ran on the same ticket in the local elections). Hopefully regime change is still on the table once there’s ceasefire. Difficult to imagine the war will resume. Elections next and hopefully, though I’m not optimistic, Israelis have learned a lesson about the limits of their dependence on the U.S.

Maybe they can get creative and find a deep-pocketed local sponsor:

The easy answer here is “no, it does not”

vmateusimeon,

@paninid @susurros @palestine malauradament, la vida que la Humanitat s'ha dispensat no permet conceptes com ara "fàcil" en aquesta mena de situacions.
