/ Spain to recognise Palestinian statehood by July, leader says

[…] State news agency EFE and newspapers El Pais and La Vanguardia cited Sanchez as making the informal remarks to the travelling press corps late on Monday in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on the first day of visits to Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

[…] He expected Spain to extend recognition to the Palestinians by July, he said, adding that he believed there would soon be a "critical mass" within the European Union to push several member states to adopt the same position, according to EFE.

@faab64 @palestine @israel giving Palestinians a place at the table as a party in negotiations about their own fate will be a huge step forward. The right for self determination was established in Wilson’s 14 points after WWI, and was never applied to the Palestinians. It’s about time this historical injustice should be rectified.

/ "To let Hamas win because of the captives? Most of the public opposes a deal"

Israel's former Ambassador to the UK and former International Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office shooting at every direction in an embarrassing and cruel online talk with "American Friends of Likud".

The Israeli government's disregard for the well-being of its own citizens has rarely been so blatant and coldly expressed, in this case with an Australian accent 🙄 ...

As many families of the victims emphasize: try to envision it was your own daughter or son being held captive in Gaza, before making such callous statements. However, one doubts whether Regev would have the courage to convey such sentiments directly to any of these anguished families.

/ Former President Rivlin: Israel is one step away from international ostracism

The former president expressed concern that Israel is at risk of losing international credibility and facing isolation if it does not change its approaches related to military conflicts and hostage negotiations.

In an interview with IDF Radio, Rivlin added:

[…] "We are losing the tremendous moral values that all Israeli governments for generations have enjoyed, by the conduct and behavior of the IDF and by the behavior of the State of Israel in everything related to the wars we have waged for 76 years."

Rivlin seems slightly delusional believing Israel had some exceptional “moral values” to be admired during its 76 years of occupation and abuse of international laws. It’s just that Gaza is more visible, and the crimes are difficult to explain away.

Hearing about the Israeli airstrike on Gaza which killed seven working for food aid NGO , I was reminded immediately of Meron Rapoport’s post about how Israel is sabotaging aid efforts. See Israel's Policy of Calculated Disorder in Gaza https://kolektiva.social/@oatmeal/112133541637687094.

There’s nothing much to add. At this point it does seem Israel is doing its best to sow chaos by killing foreign aid workers; as well as locals it agreed could assist in securing the deliveries.

[…] "This is not only an attack against , this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war," said Erin Gore, chief executive of World Central Kitchen.

The English edition of Haaretz seems to omit details of the attack, such as:

[...] Some of the passengers appeared to be getting out of the vehicle after being hit by the missile and moving to one of the other two. They continued on their way and even notified those responsible for them that they had been attacked, but seconds later another missile hit their vehicle. The third vehicle in the convoy approached them, and the passengers began transferring wounded survivors of the second attack into it—in order to get them away from danger. However, then a third missile was fired and hit them. All seven volunteers of the organization were killed in the attack.

[cont’d] more information in harretz’s English edition from earlier in the day describing the deliberate killing of aid workers, according to “defense sources”. Reminder, IDF had the coordinates of the convoy and knew in advance its destination. This seems to suggest that a decision was made that a “terrorist” should be killed at the expense of everyone in the convoy.

[…] At some point, when the convoy was driving along the approved route, the war room of the unit responsible for security of the route ordered the drone operators to attack one of the cars with a missile.

[…] Some of the passengers were seen leaving the car after it was hit and switching to one of the other two cars. They continued to drive and even notified the people responsible that they were attacked, but, seconds later, another missile hit their car.

[…] The third car in the convoy approached, and the passengers began to transfer to it the wounded who had survived the second strike – in order to get them out of danger. But then a third missile struck them. All seven World Central Kitchen volunteers were killed in the strike.

Famed Israeli Author Sami Michael Dies at 97

[...] Born and raised in , Mr. Michael was a political activist and member of the Communist party; when a warrant for his arrest was issued in 1948, he fled to neighboring Iran. Unable to return to Iraq, he immigrated to Israel in 1949. After working as an engineer and as a journalist for the Haifa-based Arabic newspaper Al Itihad, he became an acclaimed novelist who has been nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature. He [was] a human rights activist and the president of ACRI – the Association for Civil Rights in Israel.

Excerpts from a speech he gave back in 2012:

[...] The dominant culture in Israel has always directed its eyes towards the West. But this West, as always, weighs the existence of Israel as well as other countries in terms of economic profit and strategic value. The European settlers in Algiers, Zimbabwe and South Africa lasted longer than Zionist settlement in Israel. The hold that white men had over South Africa developed into an impressive power, but when the order of priorities changed in the world, it seems that the wall of Western support was a passing illusion, treacherous and deceptive. The State of Israel is in fact the product of traditional Jewish intercession. When the fathers of Zionism in Europe garnered sympathy for the establishment of a Jewish state they made use of the argument that the entity to be created would spread a wave of advanced European culture into the Middle East. This approach took root in Israeli consciousness, and until today Europe is the spiritual Mecca for a large section of the Israeli intelligentsia, especially for those writers considered as the shapers of public opinion. In my view, this is one of the deep internal conflicts in the Zionist idea. Zionist ideology emerged against the background of European anti-Semitism, yet the fathers of Zionism volunteered to serve as the agents of that very culture which nurtured a hatred of the Jews. It thus transpires that those upholding this approach regard the generations of anti-Semitism, the expulsion from Spain, the atrocities of Nazi Germany as if they had occurred on another planet, in some imaginary era.

/ Will Israeli Academia Speak Out Against IDF's Actions in Gaza?

The answer to this question, raised by Amira Hass couple of weeks ago https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/2024-03-18/ty-article-opinion/.premium/will-israeli-academia-speak-out-against-the-armys-actions-in-gaza-no-way/0000018e-4d97-dc34-a18e-ff9f21fc0000, is a resounding no.

As Israel kills dozens of academics, destroys every university and subjects Gaza's civilian population to horrible suffering, many in the Israeli academia are unable to bring themselves to speak up when it's their country that's being accused of such crimes.

All things considered, Ariel Porat, Tel Aviv University's president, does his best. But it does come across as the absolute minimum, as he stops short of calling Israel's leaders to stop and univocally condemn the indiscriminate killing and engineered starvation.

[...] In recent weeks, the humanitarian crisis has begun to be addressed, albeit quietly and with caution. A few weeks ago, a strong statement was issued, signed by nearly a thousand academics and members of several faculties in the country, including the IDF Chief of Staff, calling on the Israeli government to act forcefully to prevent a humanitarian crisis. Many refrained from signing the statement, not because they disagree with the call, but out of fear that it would be perceived as a moral judgment: after all, the State of Israel is going through its most difficult times, and it is essential to achieve the goals of the war as determined by its leaders.

[...] This is a grave mistake. It is highly doubtful whether a humanitarian crisis will advance the goals of the war, and in fact, it may hinder our ability to achieve these goals, both in terms of operational effectiveness and in terms of losing international legitimacy and support, even from our friends. But above all, it is a grave mistake because there is no goal, however noble, that justifies all means. And it is clear that Hamas's clear responsibility for the horrific disaster that has befallen us, which affects not only us but also our children, does not absolve us, in and of itself, of responsibility for the situation that has been created.

/ Antisemitism and "Aliya" (immigration) and IDF's chronic manpower shortage

With war in Gaza, Israel faces new pressure to draft the ultra-Orthodox into service, but there are other sources to exploit.
The "Accompanying Olim" project is a recurring initiative, of the sort Israel rolls out whenever its faces international criticism, which it then exploits to stoke fears of a supposed rise in .

This particular iteration involves veteran immigrants from France guiding new arrivals from the same country (Israeli Minister of Immigration and Integration Ofir Sofer was in attendance.) https://www.ynet.co.il/judaism/article/rjazehpka

The fact is that France's thriving Jewish community serves as a testament to the failure of Zionism, as well as the prudence of the luckiest Arab Jews who had a choice not to immigrate to Israel after 1948, sparing themselves from the institutionalized racism and marginalization that impoverished those who had no choice but to settle in what was essentially a colony of Eastern Europeans claiming to have founded a home for all Jewish people.

Professor Sergio Della Pergola's research highlights important demographic trends among Jewish immigrant populations in Israel and France. His data shows that in the 1960s and 1970s, Jewish immigrants to both countries from Europe/USA and Asia/Africa had comparable professional distributions, with those arriving to Israel from either geographies being majority blue-collar workers and unskilled laborers, rather than academics or professionals.

However, the trajectories of these immigrant groups diverged substantially within Israel over time due to government policies that marginalized and disadvantaged Arab Jews. While arriving with similar socioeconomic profiles, a significant gap emerged, with Arab Jews facing systemic discrimination and barriers to integration.

/ Preliminary probe finds unspecified flaws in UN Palestinian refugee agency

The UN has identified "critical areas" that need improvement in the UNRWA, following a preliminary investigation into the agency. The investigation was launched after Israel accused 12 UNRWA employees of being involved in a attack on Israel in October, resulting in the deaths of around 1,160 people. The UN immediately fired the accused staff members and launched an internal probe, led by former French foreign minister Catherine Colonna.

The interim report found that UNRWA has mechanisms in place to ensure neutrality, but also identified areas requiring improvement. However, the specific issues were not disclosed. A final report will be presented to the UN Secretary-General on April 20. Colonna interviewed UNRWA staff and officials from both Israel and Palestine as part of the investigation.

and the UN / Imseis, Ardi. The United Nations and the Question of Palestine: Rule by Law and the Structure of International Legal Subalternity. Cambridge, United Kingdom ; New york, NY: Cambridge University Press, 2024.

Imseis criticizes the two-state solution, stating that it was not aligned with core principles of international law when originally envisioned and has contributed to Palestine's contingent status in the international legal order. Despite the Palestinian Liberation Organization's recognition of Israel in 1988 and acceptance of the partition plan of 1947, the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territory remains in place, raising questions about the validity of this historical compromise.

[...] Put simply, partition could never be legal without the freely expressed consent of the governed, and in the vast majority of the population outright refused partition as an abomination of international law and their right to self-determination vis a vis the European settlers in their midst. Examination of the record, in the form of the public and private meetings and report of the UN Special Committee on Palestine () as well as the General Assembly debates that followed, demonstrates that partition was not based on these international legal considerations. Rather, it was driven by powerful European states and their settler-colonial affiliates. The UN record reveals that the declared goal of these states was to rectify Europe’s centuries-old Jewish question in the wake of the and to do so at the expense of the innocent third-party Palestinians.
