On Thursday will celebrate Victory Day, its commemoration of the defeat of in 1945. Domestically, this is nostalgia. In the 1970s, Soviet leader Leonid created a cult of victory. Russia under has continued the tradition.

Abroad, this is intimidation. We are meant to think that Russia cannot lose.

Russia can lose. And it should lose, for the sake of the world — and for its own sake.

@hanse_mina Of course, Ukrainians did a lot of the fighting and dying in the war against Nazism

@johnquiggin
A lot of the Soviet fighting and dying, in general. Also the Winter War and Continuation War frontlines against Finland were to large degree manned by Ukrainian infantry. But we don't hold it against them - it was all Stalin.
