The shops in Cornwall, for some reason have stopped selling them, even the tory Warburton ones have vanished. So please help a Scottish lass in exile in Cornwall to remember hame wi a good recipe and tell me how you make yours? I can get proper black pud and square sausage nae bother but hame made tattie scones have tae be the best, nae?

@RosePuckey being lazy, we use this version (from the Scotsman). Desperate paper, but…

@Wen they look nice enough, thank you, I'm getting so homesick at the moment and need a reminder of this sort of thing..

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey we serve them along with Haggis and extras. Crisp and tasty.

@Wen Was thinking of poached eggs as decent haggis here is a luxury. Did you see they found a piper haggis recently? An amazing wee beastie with 6 legs.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey but surely Haggis is available - pricey maybe, but easy if time consuming to make and tastes better

@Wen Yes, the supermarkets have their offerings but I use a Scottish butchers for all the good stuff. Although, for me, the best square sausage is from the barras but nobody knows what beef ham is, sadly.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey ahh the Piper… a rare breed, they are hunted wit sound dugs…

Haggis with spicy Spanish omelette works well.

RosePuckey,
@RosePuckey@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen Even the ausies knicked oor woodland haggis and turned them into drop bears. But the pipers are supposed to be the best.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey I hesitate to imagine the sound as they drop… the original killer drones!

RosePuckey,
@RosePuckey@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen Like the drone of the pipes?

The hillside ones are too easy to catch. The males with shorter left legs and the females with shorter right legs. Just chase them round the hills into nets. But no, the woodland ones sit in branches of trees waiting for passing walkers to drop on. Whereas the pipers emit a deathly squeal, rendering their prey deaf and so easier to creep up to.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey well that’s Pipers for you. Are you aware of their stealthy Northumbrian cousins?

RosePuckey,
@RosePuckey@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen Ooooooh, do tell.

RosePuckey,
@RosePuckey@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen *settles down for a story, thinking about the Lambton worm of haggis.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey there is one. I might need to reinforce myself with a dram to be able to tell the full story though.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey a quieter beestie. It relies on an extended arm muscle to hunt. They are known to bellow as they surround their prey. To be avoided…

RosePuckey,
@RosePuckey@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen Aaaaah, so not so wormlike so much as Arm ish?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey they are bred to maximise the squeeze.

RosePuckey,
@RosePuckey@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen and being more Southern and near the toon I suppose they bellow Haway the lads...

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey I am sure, although the Sunderland variant hate their Newcastle cousins and never unterbreed. Except on chilly November nights…

RosePuckey,
@RosePuckey@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen Hang on a sec, you don't suppose those over appreciated mates from the toon are actually Northunbrian haggis are they?

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey difficult to tell in the North of England. I have heard whispers of a Yorkshire variant - ‘Gods own Pipes’ but Newcastle is sensitive about mentioning them.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey haggii I should say….

Thebratdragon,
@Thebratdragon@mastodon.scot avatar

@RosePuckey @Wen ooooh they look nice, especially if you cook them after frying bacon....

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@Thebratdragon @RosePuckey except thar we are veggie 🤣 but it’s a solid easy recipe.
