Moan number 1. I really, really wish there was some kind of key for Independents during council elections. I like to get an overall feel of results, but that label tells you nothing. I really want to know are they left, centre, right, absolute fash, extreme local focus, etc.

Moan number 2. A much bigger one this.

I really, really wish the UK media would get a grip when reporting on far right parties. Headlines like "Reform UK becoming real opposition to Labour, says Richard Tice", when they haven't won any council seats and came third after Tories in the by-election is just ludicrous. Tice saying it does not make it so.

There's a discussion to be had, but not like that.

@eclectech Indeed! "Conservative swivel-eyed loon support being eaten away by even more extreme parties" might be closer to the point.

I wonder if that headline was printed on a paper news? If it was only published on digital media it has a minor meaning because it was cheaper (and faster) And cheap talking mostly comes with cheap media.😃
Btw, have you noticed that you missed the source for Tice's publisher?

@enigma No idea how the printed media have reacted as I don't get a paper, but this is a general trend over the last decade (hence me not picking up one example, my moan is wider than one headline); the coverage Farage got pre-referendum similarly over estimated his / UKIPs electoral results, while Greens, for comparison, get very little attention with better electoral results. It's rubbish.

@eclectech
so the bad taste of those headlines comes from pseudo scandals or heads that wants to see their heads on the lines😫. Best example of printed scandal paper in UK is still the Sun, right ? ( in germany the Bildzeitung, boulevard so called).

@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@enigma Oh, it's so difficult to say which is the worse printed paper here 😫 The Sun is awful, definitely one of the worse, but a lot of others are terrible too.

@eclectech that's a side effect of a fundamentally 2 party system that anything else is immaterial which is soo damn stupid and backwards

18+ eclectech,
@eclectech@things.uk avatar

@Darkedge Yep. The only briefly entertaining thing about it is, given that we're in a 2 party system, I just checked the latest results and Tories are in 3rd place

@eclectech it takes a bit of delving, much more than an average Joe is willing to do. Plus, several Conservative candidates have been giving the impression they're independent by omitting most/all Conservative branding from their leaflets.

@ItsThatDeafGuy Aye. We have taken to obsessively checking any political literature sent here to check which party, as our local Tories have done that.

I know that however much of a political nerd I am, I'm never going to track down the 159 (so far) Independent Councillors in other areas though, and would quite like to know which vague direction they lean in!
