OC The enshittification of “enshittification” (blog.bloonface.com)
Meta officially launches Twitter rival Threads. 10 million have joined already (edition.cnn.com)
Facebook has tried to compete with Twitter in numerous ways over the years, including copying signature Twitter features such as hashtags and trending topics. But now Facebook’s parent company is taking perhaps its biggest swipe at Twitter yet.
OC The fediverse is a privacy nightmare (blog.bloonface.com)
ActivityPub, the protocol that powers the fediverse (including Mastodon – same caveats as the first two times, will be used interchangeably, deal with it) is not private. It is not even semi-private. It is a completely public medium and absolutely nothing posted on it, including direct messages, can be seen as even remotely...
Aspartame a possible carcinogen, WHO cancer research agency expected to say (www.rnz.co.nz)
One of the world's most common artificial sweeteners is set to be declared a possible carcinogen....
“Reddit cannot survive without its moderators. It cannot.” - The Verge (www.theverge.com)
That’s a recent quote from Reddit’s VP of community, Laura Nestler. Here’s more of it: This week, Reddit has been telling protesting moderators that if they keep their communities private, the company will take action against them. Any actions could happen as soon as this afternoon.
Aspartame: Sweetener used in Diet Coke possibly causes cancer, WHO set to declare (ground.news)
This should be big - and about time. Studies have known about this for 40 years, and it's known in some circles that aspartame is quite bad for your health....
What search engine do you use?
Data on search engine market share is available, but I wonder what that looks like for Lemmy users in particular, who I would assume lean more technical than the average user, so probably use DuckDuckGo and alternates more than Google....
Google is laying off employees at Waze (www.theverge.com)
If ActivityPub can't survive Meta, it was never going to succeed in the first place
Corporations don't just sit out on new technologies, and no matter how hard you try you can't force them to. Defederating from Meta's new project preemptively is naive, and will not do much of anything....
Kev Quirk, one of the admins of Fosstodon (a Mastodon instance), destroys Meta in an email exchange. (fosstodon.org)
The exchange is about Meta's upcoming ActivityPub-enabled network Threads. Meta is calling for a meeting, his response is priceless!
OC Welcome!
Just created this on KBin to see if anyone else shows up from here, I'm Bloon and I also run the Fine City Social instance :)
