Why would the nationalisation of Thames Water end up putting its debt on the public books? If a company goes bust, and the govt buys the remains, surely the investors simply lose their investment and the debt falls to zero?
They want water companies to operate as profit makers, so they should accept when they go bust too.
@chrisgerhard@localzuk But Thames water OpCos still have assets and many of the lenders seem to have charges over the proceeds of the sale of those assets
Challenge is the public taking on the minimum of debt while staying out of legal battles and Investor / State despute processes
@andydavies@chrisgerhard I think this comes to my investor vs supplier comment. I'm OK with suppliers having their debts paid, as they'll still be needed once the govt takes over.
It's investors that should lose out. And companies that loaned them funds.
The Tories don't dare feature Sunak in their campaign materials ... Just as #Captain_UTurn (AKA The Great Progressive Socialist) has airbrushed the union flag from election materials in Scotland.
There are limits to his patriotism it seems.... Sir Keir is truly the #StarmerChameleon!
So Victoria Derbyshire reveals today that disciplinary proceedings against Diane Abbott ended months ago. Consequently Starmer had to come clean that they have no intention of allowing her to stand in the next GE. What a nasty piece of work he is. #Labour#ukpolitics
Remember the main allegation was she didn’t take tax advice to avoid the risk of paying extra tax. As it is HMRC concluded there was no extra tax due, so she saved herself the cost of an accountant.
All journalists should remind themselves not to amplify smears from political opponents.
@zzypt I'm a pensioner, I would like to pay less tax. However I would also like to live in a country with functioning public services and with infrastructure that isn't decaying. More importantly I would like to see societal results for paying so much tax. #NeverVoteConservative#GE2024
Me too. I like money but I like life even more. Most pensioners depend on the NHS. Or should I say used to when waiting lists were weeks not years.
Giving us money instead of the NHS wouldn't wash with me. Let's hope some sharp journalists expose this votes not lives fallacy and it, like so much so far, backfires.
Tories appear (once they gain a position in government) to value greed, dishonesty, corruption & cruelty.
Those are not the UK values I was brought up to value & respect.
We used to be, in the main, a tolerant and compassionate country. But the Tories have done their best to destroy that.
We are poorer in every sense for their 'contriibution' & I will be very glad to see them gone.
First YouTube video for Bristol Central labour MP. Key theme “I like the green policies but Thangam is a nice person”.
This shows they know who the threat is -and are prepared to spend money trying to keep her as an MP. My reaction: turn on the iCloud “hide my network location” service #ukpolitics
Delighted that I’ll be able to vote in the #ge2024 for an eco-socialist candidate.
I can’t vote SNP again whilst they proudly platform folk like Cherry in my old constituency. I don’t say that just as a “disgruntled” voter but as a queer Indy activist which picked up the role of an SNP branch organiser in her constituency after Alba defections.
The only choice for me in this election is the @ScottishGreens
"From railways to nurseries and children’s homes, investors are taking advantage of chances to siphon taxpayer funds offshore. Sector by sector, private equity is making deep inroads into UK public services"
