schizanon,

programming is fascinating.

is already mysterious, but programming a chip to emulate other chips is just straight up extraterrestrial

@schizanon FPGA is not emulation of hardware, it is an implementation of compatible hardware. Emulation means it is implemented in software running on a CPU. FPGA does not run on a CPU it is hardware, with programmable wiring.

schizanon,

@hansfbaier I know

@schizanon I agree that it is fascinating, but speaking as somebody who works with FPGAs, I would definitely not go so far as to describe any work with them as "extraterrestrtial". :)

If you have an interest in them and you wish to pursue that interest, I am confident you will find them understandable. :)

schizanon,

@cstanhope I've tried to understand chips themselves and it's just

video/mp4

schizanon,

@cstanhope is there an FPGA board you'd recommend for a beginner? Do you program with Verilog?

cstanhope,
@cstanhope@social.coop avatar

@schizanon I've used both Verilog and VHDL. I don't have a board suggestion. It will depend on budget and what you'd like to do. For instance, if you'd like to mess around with video generation, you might want to make sure your board supports that out of the box or can maybe support PMOD.

If you'd like to utilize open source tools, Lattice parts are a good place to look:

Of course, if you think you like to get a MiSTer, then you can consider starting there.

schizanon,

@cstanhope thanks for the tips!

what kind of work are you doing?

@schizanon I just remembered this post that streamed by here the other day, which might be helpful.

schizanon,

@cstanhope thanks!

AMD going all-in huh?

cstanhope,
@cstanhope@social.coop avatar

@schizanon I apologize, but I don't follow. I mean, other than Xilinx getting gobbled up by AMD a while back? :)

schizanon,

@cstanhope oh, sorry the link redirects to https://fpgajobs.com for some reason, and I just saw there are a lot of listings for AMD.

I thought that was what you were sending me to, but now I see the url is to a blog article that I can only get to if I copy paste the URL, odd.

cstanhope,
@cstanhope@social.coop avatar

@schizanon Oh weird. That is odd. Sorry 'bout that. But now that you mention it, I think that might've happened to me too when I originally spotted the URL. I assumed I made a mistake, and I navigated back to the article through their "Blog" link. That's just bizarre, but I'm glad you were finally able to see what I originally intended. 😆

schizanon,

@cstanhope yeah, I was wondering why you sent me to a jobboard, thought you must've had a lot of faith in my ability to learn 😆

these boards look cool, I'll have to think of a project to build with one!

@schizanon As far as integration goes, I suppose 😄

schizanon,

@vintprox what is "integration" in this context?

@schizanon The deepest level of nesting microschemes in each other that you can go with the resources at hand (next up: go nano, pico).
