I did the Online Monotropism Questionnaire survey and my results are:

Monotropism Score: 222 / 235

Average: 4.72

This score means that you are more Monotropic than about 95% of autistic people and about 100% of allistic people.

@IzabelaKaramia @actuallyautistic well that was fun to do .. I am only more monotropistic than 8 % of autistic and 79% of allistic… I think I have just learned to mask so much I have conditioned myself away from my natural response.

Well, this explains /a lot/ and describes me well. My spouse now quietly walks in and sits in my office and waits until I disengage. When I was younger, I could go all day without thinking about food (and was quite thin). One time, I was concentrating and holding a pencil; that pencil ended up stuck in the ceiling when someone tapped my shoulder. (Nobody has been that stupid, since.) Now I have word for this behavior:

Monotropism Score: 186 / 235

Well, working in a scientific environment, where being able to focus and ignore the social noise of the office is a benefit, probably helps. 50+ years of learning to let go of frustrations and anxiety (including yoga classes) probably helps too.

Thanks for letting me discover this indicator !

It's a questionnaire developed by researchers who have developed the monotropic theory of autism. The website which describes the theory is at https://monotropism.org/

I find it pairs well with Intense World Theory, though IWT tends to be more concerned with the sensory experience autistics have of the world.

Monotropism is more about how autistics process and think about the world, in my opinion.

I just read the test without actually answering, just to see what was considered a valid evaluation.
I found that I would be all the way to the top on a lot, probably at least 80%. But the terms "anxious" & "anxiety" derailed a lot of them for me. I don't think I am ever "anxious." Perhaps I don't understand the word. I get annoyed, irritated, worried but to me it is not "anxiety." If there is something concerning, I either tackle it or turn away.

axnxcamr,

@dbc3

A boss once told me I was so smooth that he thought if I wasn't a heavy coffee drinker, my heart would stop. I'm that kind of calm.

I am now in a very stressful situation at my current job, like never before. All my quirks and tics are turned to 11.

Cheeks chewing, shaking legs, jaw clenching, beard stroking, knuckles and neck cracking... all those behaviours were always there, but inconspicuous.

Was I always anxious without even realizing?

sentient_water,

@IzabelaKaramia @actuallyautistic @ferrous Like you say created by autists for autists. I usually hate questionnaires as they're riddled with ambiguous & unanswerable questions but I absolutely flew through this.

axnxcamr,

@sentient_water @IzabelaKaramia

I often struggle to choose between "[dis]agree" and "strongly [dis]agree", because all I can focus on is that one time when I didn't exhibit the behaviour, so I think I might score lower than I should.

...or maybe my own biases make me think I should score higher, while the results are correct?

Thoses tests... they do not bring me peace of mind. 😭

    Your description sounds similar to me; a diverse set of hyperfixations which rotate on multi-year time frames.

    "If you've met one autistic, you've met one autistic" is a common refrain in the community 🙂 For me, there's no compelling reason to seek clinical diagnosis - if I would even pass! It's enough for me to understand that my mental shutdowns and social missteps have an explanation and that I am not alone. Aside from the negatives, I am fortunate to get a lot of positives from my neurotype.

    @JoBlakely That's rough that people weren't able to look past your appearance! I definitely have the hyperlexia one, somewhat ridiculous scores on literacy as an 8 year old I never lived up to 😅 My challenge with appearance is that people don't see the mental strain when I am close to a mental shutdown.

    The real annoyance, and maybe one common to a lot of late diagnosed, is that no one ever thought they should tell me specifically what weird meant. No one was like "uh hey, you know you have ADHD/autism right?" Social taboo apparently 🫠

    @JoBlakely fair point, hard to know who knows and it can be risky to broach neurodivergence with someone.

    Choosing vulnerability is a brave thing for tou to do ❤️ I’ve always kinds missed (or ignored? Im not sure) those power relations. My own (perceived) independence is born from luck and happenstance. Im happy to work for others so long as I am trusted and there is mutual respect.

    It’s definitely more fun embracing those in your tribe rather than fitting into a culture that wont really accept anyone for who they are.
