  • Autistic traits are just human traits.
  • All traits lie on a spectrum
  • Every autistic person is different

Think of the spectrum as an audio mixer with sliders set to different levels. Autistic people may have sliders all the way on or off.

Like all generalisations, including this one, it's wrong. But moderately helpful.

Assuming any kind of veracity in the pic, I'm gonna guess that I'm probably somewhere between "Special Interests" and "Eye Contact".

Some of mine are turned up, but most are down. (I was driving home from the dentist the other day, on the freeway, and realized I was wiggling toes on one foot just because.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic My problem with this illustration is, that it's so oversimplified, that it likely just leads to further misunderstandings and it's so underexplained, that it leaves too much room for interpretation.
This just seems one or two step above just having one slider called "amount of autism" to explain "aspergers".
I know it's hard to strike a balance between simplifying enough to get attention and not too much to be wrong, so I'm not attacking you or the person who made it

Slipp,

@autism101 @actuallyautistic don't mean to be insensitive, I just need some clarification. Aren't these all just traits every human has to some degree? Like, if the classification is this vague, it seems every human on earth could be called autistic

Slipp,

@autism101 @actuallyautistic To me, it always seemed that autism is a label for those who aren't as "productive" in a capitalist society. Maybe as a way too for doctors to overperscribe. I just want to know what makes autism fundamentally different from quirks that most people have, or a lack of developed social skills

@Slipp @autism101 @actuallyautistic In my bf's case, he says he has dulled emotions. So while he has highs and lows, it's not nearly as easily experienced as someone typical, and it also takes a lot more to get him to those peaks in either direction. When he does get there, it's obvious and almost uncontrollable. I've seen him slam his desk in frustration and cry from being overwhelmed, but otherwise he says things that would give me, for example road rage, he just brushes off and "whatever"s it

iamaugustreign,
@iamaugustreign@mastodon.social avatar

@Slipp @autism101 @actuallyautistic He also has this tendency to over explain himself, but to the point where it comes across as "You're wrong, I'm right". So while you've given him the correct answer, and it is proven thats the correct answer, he will still give further input that makes it sound like he's doubting you, but he explains it as giving futher context to how he got to his conclusion. I can't even try to emulate it, it's different than how I think.

Slipp,

@iamaugustreign @autism101 @actuallyautistic oh thanks for the input. that's how my younger brother is too. I've struggled to understand him for a long time

@iamaugustreign @Slipp @autism101 @actuallyautistic Part of the description of your BF seems like an OCD element in mixed in, because I'm like that, An explanation has to 'feel' complete, no different than some people's OCD touching of a on/off button until it 'feels' complete. It drives everyone, including me, crazy. It's different than mansplaining, but comes across to others the same.

@timo21 @Slipp @autism101 @actuallyautistic Shrug. I just asked him if he knew of anything else he's been evaluated / diagnosed with. As far as he knows, it's just Asparagus*.

*forgot the name for asp. nowadays but I've seen people hate/shun the term cuz of negative historical events

@iamaugustreign @Slipp @autism101 @actuallyautistic. IMO Asperger's is just an NT way of saying 'but you seem so normal, not like that person over there 👉 ". {Edit, I was under the impression that the 'spectrum' concept supercedes all the old catagorizations created by NTs such as Asperger's}

Yes, named after Hans Asparagus who grew vegetables for the Nazi war effort back in the 1940s.

Nowadays the Asparagus name is no longer used. It's incorporated into Weird Pointy Vegetables.

@Slipp @autism101 @actuallyautistic We are literally wired differently.

NTs have similar nervous systems and settings to each other. We don't. More unique than the average individual. More room for variation. Been around for millenia.

But we also develop in divergent ways. And get no help. Nothing but hurdles, all the way down.

We disrupt the oppression plan of making everyone the same. So I'm proud to be disruptive, by my very existence.

Less work for me.😎

I had a discussion with my parents recently, who are most likely ND too. My father said, everybody feels kind of unnormal that it's part of life to accept it.

I could convince him in the end that not "everybody" feels that way. And that most people will not suddenly read multiple books about bow crafting and create their own bow over many months. He really thought everybody was secretly like that...

@Slipp @autism101 @actuallyautistic Imagine the sliders are hearing. I'm. Hyper. Sensory So. I would be driven crazy in classrooms with fluorescent lights all buzzing around me. I would be overwhelmed by sensory input, not realizing because everybody else is sitting around being bored.

That's only one thing that's different. And the problem is, no one believes you when you try to tell them "the lights are too loud."

Slipp,

@brainpilgrim @autism101 @actuallyautistic ah yeah that would be incredibly annoying and frustrating

@Slipp @autism101 @actuallyautistic my experience is the 'spectrum' is not a graditional scale, it's a grouping of certain traits that are different for everyone. Most people (NTs) don't have those traits, so no, everyone is not autistic, but NTs will catagorize everyone on a scale, just like they catagorize autism as 'bad' and needing to be 'cured'. That scale image is not something an autistic person would use except to placate NTs. IMO.

axnxcamr,

@Slipp

I personally don't like analogies because they usually fall short on many levels. Remember that analogies are a way to simplify a concept and not give a complete or even accurate description of that concept.

But, given the audio mixer analogy, where humans in general would have slight variations of most of those traits and high variation on one or very few, autistic people might have high variation over multiple traits.

There lies the distinction.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic
Good analogy. A mixer takes in many inputs and sums them into a stereo output, just like a brain takes many inputs from senses, and emotions, and sums them into an experience that consciousness can interact with.

That said, that’s not a mixer in the picture, but a ten band EQ, which also could work as a brain analogy but not as well as the mixer.

I think a mixer with built in EQ is better than the individual ones, as the brain not only takes input at different intensities but also colorizes them with its many different filters.
