cordillera, in [Thread] End of Summer - Start of Autumn Songs

I live in Manila and there’s basically two seasons: hella rain vs no rain. We’re in the hella rain period. This is when all the typhoons, monsoons, storms, floods, etc. happen and it goes on from June to November.

So to commemorate the middle of the rainy season, here’s a live performance by Lola Amour performing “Raining in Manila”. I’m not familiar with them but the song is a little jazzy and all the dudes crammed in that bus are totally all in sync.

Probably one of my favorite covers ever

julianwgs, in 🎸 ⛷ "I can fly so high, I can fall so deep" Guano Apes - Lords Of The Boards (1998)

This is one of these songs everyone recognizes, but only few know the song by name. Great share!

Fairytale of New York is getting a lot of well deserved attention, but the fact remains that Shane is responsible for a fair share of the most beautiful songs ever written.

A Rainy Night in Soho is one amazing example of his songwriting.

And remember, death is not the end.

paddirn, in Electric Six - Gay Bar

This song, ‘Danger! High Voltage’, and a few others are so goddamn amazing, yet most of their songs are pretty subpar, they’re just really inconsistent. I can’t even understand how it’s the same group sometimes. I want to love them, but there’s just not enough there.

ivanafterall, in [QUESTION OF THE WEEK] What's an alternative band you should TOTALLY BE INTO based on your taste, but no matter how hard you tried... it just didn’t click?
ivanafterall avatar

I tried a few times with some of the indie darlings like Wilco and Neutral Milk Hotel. I didn't hate them--some okay songs here and there--but I didn't want to start a new religion to them like a lot of people seem to feel after hearing their albums.

I tried to listen to the whole album, but kept going back to this song… to this day that’s the only song I know of them. It’s really beautiful.

The album 'pride' is originally what got me into him. It's really good and has a weirdness to it I love. But I agree - song for zula is one of the greatest. The rest of this album didn't do it for me either.

However, seeing them live is fucking fantastic. You don't need to like their songs to have a good fucking time. Their passion is contagious.

Hackerman_uwu,

You’re allowed to say: “one hit wonder”.

I think the whole forced hipster faux-Americana country folk indie fad did about as well as could be expected.

No one can name a song by Edward Sharpe and the magnetic zeros other than Home either.

Nurgle, in At the Drive-In - One Armed Scissor (2000)

This band was so good live when they weren’t absolutely gakked out of their minds.

ren, in [30 Day Song Challenge: Alternative Nation Edition] Day 28 - An alternative song by an artist WHOSE VOICE YOU LOVE. 🎤🎤🎤
@ren@lemmy.world avatar

I love unique voices. From Michael Stipes mumbling slight twang to the nasally whines of Gordon Gano from the Femmes, Jeff Mangum from Neutral Milk, and Colin Meloy of Decemberists. The voice is the glue that makes or breaks bands for me.

But if I can indulge and push the envelope of what is “alternative” a smidge, one of my very favorite voices of all time loves to sing of love and fantastical environments, who feels almost genderless and ethereal, and whose music rarely dipped into the mainstream (just once or twice). Is prog alternative? Probably not, but it ain’t mainstream.

So many songs to choose from that I love so much, but I’ll narrow it to 3.

A beautiful song with one of the best bass drops in history from what’s considered one of their best albums Close To The Edge: “And You And I” - youtu.be/IwpB6b6mhUM?si=rUuD9jr7hr7e7ovu

A massive sprawling epic overshadowed by the song “Close To The Edge” called “Awaken” - youtu.be/59feSG8U5EQ?si=snZJT9xbatKJBt32

And finally, a much later epic from Keystudio, a song called “Mind Drive” which dips toes into almost-jazz fusion jam - youtu.be/zvBknHFa8PQ?si=ocB4VViT1RH71sjS

CrabAndBroom, in Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta

What we really need to do is create a powerful sense of dread. See, the longer the note… the more dread.

perishthethought,

What’s this from? (Not this song, I hope, lol)

Afghaniscran,

Peep show. This song was the intro music.

CrabAndBroom,

It’s from Peep Show! Here’s the specific thing lol
