This from depicts 'Kurma', the second of God in form of a emerging from its mouth in form of a deity.

@ssharadmohhan @cendawanita Mom’s family was originally from those parts three generations back. Now nobody is left there, partly because there are no more opportunities left.

I get angry each time I see something from the ancestral lands being shown in V&A and British Museum. Entire generations don’t have access to this cultural heritage (Hindu and Buddhist, I should add)

@ssharadmohhan @cendawanita Specific to this image, you see Vishnu in 2d and with a moustache and not muscular at all: completely different from more contemporary images which are inspired by classical European paintings and later films. This sort of profile - with relatable Dravidian features - doesn’t exist anymore, partly because people don’t see images such as this in temples and such anymore.

cendawanita,

@cydonian
That's an extremely appreciated point, and thank you so much for sharing. Just because of this post, I'm just learning on the historical dynamic of this and how it relates to the visual representations.

@cendawanita Will post more on this tomorrow. V&A is full of such cultural loot. @ssharadmohhan
