Re: last boost - something i noticed with my medic friends here, even with (or especially because) our public healthcare, they tend to be very right-wing/neoliberal with regards to personal choices. I've got some thoughts why, but it's also why I'm unsurprised by the performance of the just-replaced minister.

Sorry haven't been here for the last couple of days, metafilter has a custom of taking turns of doing fresh first page posts (FPP) of ongoing events (since each FPP only stays active for 30 days for commenting), so I took up the turn to do the current one for the 2023 Gaza siege, since I had been collecting news and related pieces on the situation anyway. But mefi's thing is really the collective comments that make up the post. OMG Naomi Wu actually managed to bring to market her far-UVC lights, which are magically germicidal and make it much safer to eat in public. It's not even close to the top of the horrors and present dangers faced by Gazans, but I recall the aftermath of 9/11 and the lifelong respiratory conditions caused to firefighters, rescue teams and residents due to demolition dust, containing ash, asbestos, concrete, plastic and fibreglass particulate matter and other toxic materials.

The explosive demolition of 50% of Gaza's buildings will have huge consequences for public health in Gaza for generations.

My daughter practiced her eyeliner skills on me. My eyes are made out of hound dog mouths, and she wasn't prepared for that difficulty level, so now I look like I blinked two spiders to death

@middleclasstool let her know this trick for downturned eyes: Start lining (with a pencil) on the bottom lid, not the toplid, first. This will give her a better sense of what's the best angle/curve for those eyes in particular. Then, if she wants the final look to only be the top lid lined, lift the final line a couple of degrees higher than the sketched endpoint (and start lifting/angling up before the actual end of the top lid curve). 🙂

I was very worried I passed #Covid to my parents, whom I met for breakfast on Sat. Fortunately, they are negative. I think #Malaysia has gotten lax over masking. Masking mandates have been lifted, but not for public transportation (as far as I know) but more than half are not masking. I believe I caught COVID last week when I was in a packed train to KLCC. -_- Most were not masking. I was, but it's almost a pointless exercise.
I think I will be avoiding crowded LRTs & malls from now on.

One thing I want to point out to people new to cmedia (or even international cmedia fandom with no connection to the cfandom side of things) is that engaging with cmedia (from China) has specific undercurrents:

  • Things have to undergo censorship review
  • There are shifting lines in the sand about what themes/stories/content is okay and not okay (deliberately left somewhat vague so people self-censor a lot)
  • Actors/actress can and have been cancelled/edited out from their own works for tax evasion/moral misconduct/visiting Japanese war shrine (don't debate me on that photo, I'm not interested in discussing whether or not any of these are valid reasons for disappearing people's works, so it really doesn't matter if it's real of faked).
