ignore. why you even open edge? just bloatware for grandma to use. studies show a percent will pick edge

Kethal,

What is this from? It looks like a large version of the app selector on Android.

Outlook for Android

Edge’s first launch setup is a straight-up fucking barrage of pop-ups and tabs auto opening. It’s ridiculous. I groan every time I have to go through it at work. It’s almost a shame because when edge-chrome first launched it actually wasn’t bad. Of course Microsoft couldn’t have that and had to fuck it up as soon as they could.

turkishdelight,

DMA says no

STOMPYI,

This is why I’m figuring out dual booting with Linux today… use windows in case I have too…

Pantherina,

Be careful about your grub

Btw is there a “how to reinstall grub” guide? I have no idea how to do that.

Its a standalone part of the system so it could just be written to the correct partition.

EddoWagt,

Plenty of people will fall for that, my mother rarely uses her laptop, so I installed Firefox for her. She got a notification telling her to switch to Edge, so she did. At least she told me so I could switch it back

Yeah good point. I’d recommend uninstalling edge using Aveyo’s edge uninstaller, it won’t annoy you anymore.

last time i tried using it, it broke all pdf files on my system and eventually i also broke the open with menu while trying to restore it (well i restored the file association and made it point to firefox, but it seems like if you forget to set anything but edge before restoring the file association, it will break the open with menu permanently for all file types, causing it to crash explorer shell when hovered over)

owen,

I’ve been rolling out linux mint to some older family members. Firefox gave them troubles (they couldn’t identify the logo), but switching in chrome did the trick. I’m now convinced that the most common OS use-case is a browser launcher.

EddoWagt,

Indeed it is, browsers are very complex pieces of software as well, they’re almost like their own operating system

owen,

For sure. And increasingly so. I used to think chromebooks were silly but after this experience I totally see their value: 0->WWW as fast as possible is what people want

Flax_vert,

Chromebooks were genius

Flax_vert,

Isn’t that what Chromebooks are for?

owen, (edited )

Exactly! However, in my situation, I was helping them out with some old hardware. I had to help so many times with Windows that I took a risk and offered to “update their PC”. The “update” failed because chrome was gone - but I “changed some settings” and now chrome “came back to the computer” and now it’s smooth sailing 🤣🤣🤣

Pantherina,

People are social beings. They trust people recommending stuff. Its so bad that you need to tell people “well dont believe a thing big tech tells you”

EddoWagt,

I was always told to not trust strangers on the internet, but I guess if a multi billion dollar company is telling you something, you should believe them

SomeGuy69,

Is this the choice pop-up they are now legally required to buy new EU laws? There’s also a “remember” toggle. Isn’t this a positive thing to exist?

AA5B,

Yes, let’s require setting a default value as to whether we use the default value. Maybe when Edge still isn’t as popular as they like, they can use a prompt to set the default value whether to use the default value whether to sue the default value

my_hat_stinks,

No, one of the two options there is “default browser” meaning the user likely already has a non-edge default browser set up. This is clearly Microsoft trying to trick users into using Edge even when they’ve chosen not to.

groet,

Absolutely. But MS chose to go the evil route again and ask right when you want to open a link. In that situation users want to open a link and not choose browsers so they are more likely to click on edge. It is deliberately annoying which is what op is angry about

Also the EU doesn’t require it to be a pop-up, you just have to use the users set default afaik.
