I can’t even imagine what pernicious elements they can add to it to bog down someone’s website too. They don’t even have to introduce it on purpose, if it’s just a byproduct they can shrug and not worry about it. It’s shocking how much traffic you lose if your website takes three seconds to load.

Everyone should switch to Firefox/Mullvad

RaoulDook, in Could you please fuckıng not, Urban Dictionary?

Why the fuck would anybody install an APP to use a website?

(Puts on clown face) “Sure, I’ll install this program on my pocket computer from the Urban Dictionary to save the time it would take me to open a web browser and type in the URL of it, all it costs is me giving direct access to my stored personal data and real-time activities”

Rai,

The state of people blindly using apps for everything is atrocious.

“But it saves me a 1USD on my fast food burger!”

Serinus,

Fast food charges you around double if you don’t use the app. I think it’s mostly about tiered pricing. They want the money from those willing to pay $15 for a burger AND they still want the money from people who won’t pay more than $10. This way they get both.

Rai,

Makes sense. I don’t eat fast food, so I didn’t know. But no way am I installing apps for… basically any commercial thing.

RaoulDook,

Same here, but I do eat fast food on occasion. Their small discounts are not worth enough to compromise my phone’s integrity and my privacy.

Serinus,

Wendy’s order through app showing around a 45% discount.

It’s not a small discount. Of course just using the app isn’t the only hoop. You also have to order correctly to maximize the discount.

Rai,

I just looked at their app permissions, and woof. It’s almost as bad as Threads.

Moonrise2473,

Those kind of apps have a special place on my phone: petercxy’s shelter (don’t install it from play store because in order to meet the Google requirements it has been nerfed). Apps installed there use a dedicated throwaway Google account and are completely disabled with a toggle on my launcher. (Lawnchair 2 has a toggle in the drawer for it)

If an app is installed in shelter it’s on a completely separate partition and can’t access any file or photo on your main one. And once you quit, they are all disabled like if the phone is turned off

kadotux,
@kadotux@lemmings.world avatar

Fast food charges you around double if you don’t use the app.

In the US, I guess? Not where I come from

Moonrise2473,

In Italy it’s also like this

You literally pay double the price if you order without using the coupons found in the app for McDonald’s, Burger King and KFC

extant,

It’s just an incentive to install the app, the amount of data being harvested and sold/traded is basically the new economy.

ArtVandalist,

You could as much harvest more data from a browser honestly. Most apps are sandboxed, a browser shares its cookies.

extant,

Phone apps have access to significantly more data than a browser does, especially when people haphazardly agree to any and all permissions.

ArtVandalist,

If you believe that’s really true I’m probably not the one to change your mind.

Browsers usually don’t even ask for any permissions, where iOS and Android apps do, and explicitly state what data they’ll steal.

It’s much easier to fingerprint your behavior when using the web than it is when using apps.

Unless you’re only talking about “the wrong kind of apps” but then I could continue about “the wrong kind of websites”.

But hey, you do you. Happy tracking.

Edit: I feel sad that sites like The Verge et al. trick people who want to learn in those kind of directions. They’re writers, not tech people. They earn from ads! Don’t listen to them.

extant,

Yes, I’m comparing the threat level based on the maximum potential akin to the likes of “those apps”. Permissions are straightforward and will protect users just like ad blockers, decentralized static frameworks (JavaScript/CSS/fonts), and clearing cookies. But on average users are not well informed and aren’t considering permissions, add-ons, or even which browser or app they use so I compare based on the potential threat level.

A_Random_Idiot,

“but i can save a dollar by letting mcdonalds root itself deep inside my large intestine!”

flames5123,

When they introduced the app back in December 2016, they gave you a free burger/fish filet. Me and my college roommate took advantage of this and made accounts with sharklasers.com emails. We got 3 free burgers a day just by driving to the closest McDonald’s, down the road 10 mins to the next one, then back.

Anticorp,

Free burgers are definitely a big deal in college.

skizzles,

It absolutely will work on a rooted device. Mine is rooted and it works fine. Also, in my experience (maybe this is just in my area) outside of the points perk, prices are the same between the app and physically at the store as I have checked out of curiosity.

vox, (edited )
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

there are bundles and deals which are only available in the app, usually you can save like 50% with them
depends on the region i guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯

e.g. I could either get a big mac for like 22zl? or big mac + medium fries + any sauce for 16zl, or a cheeseburger for 30% of it’s price + 300 points (which you literally get back, exact amount for your order)

Don’t see the point of WebView/web apps packaged as mobile ones tho…

RaoulDook,

And that’s why your phone’s probably fucked up. Just install whatever, for the alleged convenience. But you already have a web browser, and you could simply make a bookmark to the website you visit frequently.

I get 3 days of battery life between charges on my phone without all that kind of bullshit on there. Running GrapheneOS on a supported Pixel with sandboxed Google Play services and zero social media apps that are not open source.

NikkiDimes,

Btw, I use Arch

RaoulDook,

Actually I use CentOS, Raspbian, Windows 10, Android, and MacOS on my various computers.

NikkiDimes,

Lol I like you.

chatokun,

My phone runs fine. I use some apps, and many others I use websites. My ebooks, music, podcasts, and video stuff uses apps, as well as some games, my banking app, and this lemmy app. I don’t use apps for just about every other social media (mostly because I barely use em), for many websites etc. Email I do use the apps, as well as my robovac, and some other communication based ones. Also MFA apps.

Use of apps can be decided on a per use basis, as long as the person knows the possible issues stemming from them. It doesn’t need to be all or nothing, and your solution doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. It doesn’t make you better than them, nor them better than you, just different. Stop assuming everyone should do things like you do.

Anticorp,

Redo the voice training. I agree you shouldn’t have to, but it massively helps.

SuperSpruce,

Here’s a real reason: It’s generally more optimized and smooth than the web version. And before you say that’s because the websites purposely nerf themselves, one of the best examples to support my statement is Mastodon, which is slow and laggy on the website but fast and smooth in the app.

mexicancartel,

But this urban dictionary app looks like some webapp. Also this slight smoothness costs your personally identifiable data for such apps

mystik,

Here’s the REAL reason: Apps grant Developers/Content owners more control/metrics/data about the user to feed their advertisers, which translates to more revenue. It’s way easier to hoover up data about the user outside of the browser sandbox, and in apps.

Duamerthrax,

That’s more like it. We’re glad to have you as product customer.

sunstoned,

Especially with Firefox and derivatives allowing you to run the webpage in an app-like way! I do this for everything from the public transit website in my city to financial sites.

A_Random_Idiot,

Seriously. Apps are stupid. They exist solely to steal your data, and they do that by asking for insane permissions.

And the overwhelming majority of this could be avoided if consumers didnt just straight up braindead refuse to use the actual website because “hurr hurrr I do nothing wrong why I have to hide anything I WANT MAH CONVENIENCE! REAL OR PERCEIVED!”

flames5123,

It’s quicker to load a known json into a know UI than an entire webpage. Plus, you don’t get any features in the webpage like swiping, double tapping, or notifications (for things like DMs).

I use a Lemmy app because it’s faster and just works. It hasn’t asked for any extra permissions.

Waldhuette, in Is that “Balkenkreuz” beam cross, which was used by Nazis, intentional or not?

Not everything is WW2 related my dude.

Showroom7561,

The saddle product family you’re looking at literally has Medicus in its name and you rather associate a cross with the military and not the red cross or medicine.

Because their older product lines did use a cross symbol that looked more like a medical cross, but these newer ones absolutely look like Balkenkreuz from WW2.

https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/cc754b57-91f5-4a52-8ac3-f5942243876a.jpeg

I have to reiterate that the company is German and has been around since WW2.

Seemed like a funny coincidence(?).

db2,

I see Tetris blocks. That clearly means it’s a Russian conspiracy to conspire with the Germans conspiratorially.

Susaga,

Sorry, you think it’s suspicious they put a cross on a new version of a product when the previous version had a cross on it in the exact same position? It’s just a modern, minimalist design like you see just about everywhere else. Also, Werner Herzog was born in Munich in 1942, so he’s also a German who’s been around since WW2, but that doesn’t make the guy a Nazi.

Showroom7561,

Sorry, you think it’s suspicious they put a cross on a new version of a product when the previous version had a cross on it in the exact same position?

I didn’t even know they had a different cross until the other poster mentioned “medical cross”.

Medical crosses are SOLID and usually all red or all white with red surrounding it, usually inside a circle.

I’ve never seen a medical cross that looks like a Balkenkreuz. Not even Nazis in WW2 used this symbol as a medical cross. LOL

It’s just a modern, minimalist design like you see just about everywhere else.

Of course, I’m not saying they are literal Nazis… I thought it was funny that an old German company would put a ubiquitous symbol used by Nazis during WW2 on their products.

There must have been some discussion over this at the company!

Susaga,

I find it extremely funny how you asked a question, received an answer of “no”, and then started arguing with everyone about how the answer is actually yes. The answer is no.

You cannot expect to be taken seriously when you’re arguing that a minimalist cross outline in red is the same as a black cross with a white outline, but it’s totally not the same as a red cross. And that black cross outlined in white is totally different to a grey cross outlined in white that uses the same name.

There was probably no discussion because only you saw the connection, and it’s a VERY tenuous connection at that.

Showroom7561,

You’re right. And I overestimated this Lemmy community for thinking it had more of a sense of humour.

Given the multiple coincidences of that specific symbol being used, I thought it was something funny. My apologies if it came out as not funny.

Resistentialism,

Tipping it over could cause a drop, which could be costly to replace. And if you’re just holding it to one side. You’d need a second person to either hold it, or take the plug out.

If you can afford it, cough up the money for a laser printer. I’ve had mine for years and only changed the ink once. So much better than ink jet printers, which are a total scam

Showroom7561,

Tried to fire up an older HP monochrome laser printer that is still working perfectly.

The problem? Windows 11 has no drivers, and it literally cannot be used at all. Not through Wi-Fi (old drivers, too), not through the USB port, or my shared through my router.

I mean, seriously, this stuff should work on a generic print driver until the end of time, but nope.

maengooen,

Hot news, linux is incredibly compatible with printers. CUPS is very well designed. With relatively little technical knowledge you could probably plug a raspberry pi into virtually any old printer and get it running with the Pi as a print server sharing it with the network.

Showroom7561,

Hey, that might be a good project to try. I’ve got a Pi that’s unused :)

riceandbeans161,

we’ve done this with our router at home. Plug the printer into the router’s USB (has to be direct tho, doesn’t like a hub) and then install the drivers on my mac and it works. Even though this printer is an ancient brother.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot,

Never thought I’d see the day when it’s easier to get a printer working in Linux than Windows. How the turntables.

WhoRoger,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

It’s actually been the case for 20 years now. Same with lots of other devices.

Around 2008-ish I saw a Tesco-branded webcam for something like 5€. I was just in need of one, so I looked up if it’s not, by any chance Linux compatible. It was, right out of the box.

Same thing with Sony Ericsson phones of that era. Capable of lots of things, like Ethernet over USB or Mass Storage, but with Windows it all needed a massive and annoying driver package. Linux - plug and go.

Same with Bluetooth and lots of other things.

Dicska,

I think the earlier ones were great, too. Jokes aside: people have been saying how much better Brother printers are (used to be?). I only heard positive comments about them, but even my HP laser printer is just a reliable workhorse. Or at least it has been in the last 2 years. I’ve been trying to convert people ever since (to laser printers, not HP).

CarbonatedPastaSauce,

Old HP laser printers (20 years ago) were tanks, unstoppable workhorses. I had a 4000N that was virtually unbreakable. But they’ve been coasting on that rep for a long time while they changed to inferior hardware and predatory subscription practices. Nowadays they are so enshittified I can’t imagine anyone will even be buying HP printers 20 years from now. I went to Brother for my last two printer purchases and they just work. Look through this thread or any other printer thread for “brother” and “just work”. It’s not an accident.

Dicska,

First I read 4000N as four thousand Newtons and it even felt appropriate, considering its supposed weight (Mass? Force?). Yeah, you can read everywhere how shitty HP is with printers nowadays. I just wonder what other owners of relatively new HP laser printers think, because in my 2 years I haven’t seen anything dodgy yet. I hope it stays that way crosses fingers.

Relax4939,

Unfortunately, our local credit union would end up costing a lot more per month in fees than the “free” account I have with data mining. LOL

NoIWontPickaName,

I do not understand this, I don’t recall ever having seen bank/CU accounts that cost money.

Hell my credit union pays me like 2-5% on my checking account, can’t remember and CBF to look it up, and like 3%on my savings.

I have had checking accounts without interest before, but never one I had to pay for, and I am not using shady online banks either, mine are legit respected ones.

In Canada, there are only a few banks that I’m aware of that offer free accounts. Many are online only and end up being really limited.

No listing on most popular and the only search engine that counts. Most popular browser gives a big red warning for your website. Even with different browser it won’t connect due to Google being the most popular DNS provider. No app on the only widely used app store on Android - the only OS phone manufactures use besides Apple. Your app is automatically uninstalled on >99% Android phones. Your calls gets blocked by Android spam detector. Your e-mails get blocked by Gmail. Showroom7561,

Even the black, red, white colour scheme used ties in with the Third Reich colour pallet.

And from a German company who was around during WW2…

I mean, I’m no conspiracy theorist, but this couldn’t all be a coincidence. LOL

ShadowRam,

Balkenkreuz was in use prior to WW2 and prior to Nazi's.

It appears to be a symbol of the German Armed Forces, which is a separate entity of the political Nazi party.

Some of the German forces,(like the Luftwaffe) were actually pretty anti-nazi.

So while that symbol was used by the German Forces during the Nazi regime, I wouldn't automatically see that symbol and think Nazi's.

The Swastika (with colors/rotation) and some of the SS symbols/group icons are definitely Nazi, as those are directly related to the political party.
