Molly Tuttle is a fantastic performer. Highly recommended. Very charismatic. Strong band. Excellent singer. Good songs, some very good ones. She's also the best acoustic player of her generation that I've seen so far. Her technique is exquisite without letting it get in the way of art. The moments when she switches into precision flatpicking/crosspick mode are astonishing! Her wrist freezes rock solid and all the motion goes into her fingers. And her left hand reach is immense. Wow!

@mrcompletely thank you for this report. I had plans to see her in Bellingham on Saturday but other plans got in the way. I still have one ticket left if you know anyone up there who would be interested in it for face value. The show is sold out.

21stCenturyDead,

@mrcompletely She's so amazing, seeing her in December and very psyched

@21stCenturyDead crowd was delirious by the end

darkstar91970,

@mrcompletely I have only heard a bit of her but I got tix to see her in a month or so, your review has me very excited.

@darkstar91970 it's interesting bc it's kind of an old school Nashville style bluegrass show in some ways. They're dressed to the nines. The band members really project personae as performers. It doesn't feel like a jam scene show at all in presentation though there are a LOT of songs about weed and getting weird which is a fun juxtaposition.

But when Molly solos, just...Focus on that. Really watch her. It's amazing

darkstar91970,

@mrcompletely on way home from this one. Fucking tremendous.

@mrcompletely one of my favorite elements of Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway is the strength and unique stage character of each of the band members ~ 5 incredible musicians who let their selves loose on stage, each with a different role and vibe ~ like part band and part Broadway musical

Sjwillis,

@mrcompletely She's the first woman to receive IMBA's guitar player of the year and she totally deserves it. Saw her play with Billy Strings several years ago before either had really blown up and the contrast of their styles was a joy to watch.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Sjwillis the fact that they were roomies once is amazing. Quite a nice little generation of talent going there

Corry342,

@mrcompletely Since she grew up in Palo Alto, it’s fair to say that like many country singers, she sings the traditional music of her childhood that she learned from her parents.

Phreba,

@mrcompletely she blew me away a few weeks ago the private gig I attended. Her guitar playing matched with great songwriting and singing skills was real eye opening. A genuine talent!

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Phreba total package show right? Charisma, material, band, vocals, guitar all great

Phreba,
@Phreba@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely I caught her just solo under a tent at this private gig thrown by some billionaires I don’t know. Lucky to get in as a guest of an invite. And man, she just sucked me right in. I was mesmerized. Look at that coat! So cool…

Setlist was mostly stuff from the last two albums, some of her back catalog, Dire Wolf (very nice), their version of White Rabbit (fun) and an unplanned/request solo version of Standing on the Moon. Her take on that is truly wonderful and of course really points out what a brilliantly written song that is. Funny, she started doing that tune a couple years back, and since then she's been taking off like a rocket. She deserves it. Delightful show and again just an astonishingly accomplished player

@mrcompletely Thanks for reminding us that she is on tour.

Sadly she doesn't get within a 6 hour drive for me. So I suspect I will miss her.

Decent sized venues, 9:30 club in DC holds a fair crowd.

Good for Molly !!!

@tor_haxson the little Aladdin holds 650 and I think she'll be in a place twice as big or more next time through

@mrcompletely saw her open for Hiss Golden Messenger in 2019 having known nothing, and was floored. Also does an amazing take on Cold Rain & Snow, of which there’s lots of YouTube footage. The album she had out at the time was weirdly smooth pop and didn’t play to her strengths, but her more recent studio stuff leans into bluegrass like she ought to.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@DaveG924 yep. This is my first time seeing her but I've been listening since around then. Seeing festival footage made it first she was a badass, but the albums weren't that engaging to me. Since she formed Golden Highway and cut these two albums and got a little heady she's been on a great track

@mrcompletely She's just amazing. It makes me happy you got to see her, because it's always a treat.
