Spontaneously made some #muffins for #breakfast. Not something I make very often. Maybe every year or two… These are unplanned oat, date, raisins, 12-grain cereal, and molasses things.

A split muffin with melting butter. Honey, not shown.

Local urban honey to the rescue.

@YurkshireLad@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross We used to buy honey from a local farm just south of the city, but I can't remember its name.

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@YurkshireLad this is our usual choice, from Crerar's, They are south of town in Vernon, maybe that one?

YurkshireLad,
@YurkshireLad@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross No, the jar and label are different. I'll see if we still have some left.

ukulelehans,

@ottaross @YurkshireLad Definitely, you need to get your honey from a local beekeeper. Much better quality than the crap you find at the supermarkets. Here's our supplier. However, she's retiring, but passing on the business to someone else.
#honey

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@ukulelehans @YurkshireLad indeed, and we probably use at most one kilo per year, so paying a bit more isn't a big burden.

The bees pollinate on an organic farm in the burbs, actually:

"Located on a 150-acre farmstead in the Ottawa Greenbelt on the west side of Blackburn Hamlet, the Just Food Farm is ideally situated on the bus route and bike paths…"

Not so urban, but the results are an interesting, floral, slightly piney (?) honey. Nice stuff. (K won it in a prize pkg).

@ottaross what a cute logo

@lanastewart it is indeed!

@ottaross Unpasteurised??

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@LillyHerself not sure - it doesn't mention it, nor does our other usual-producer's jars so I assume that means they're all pasteurized.

LillyHerself,
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross I just wonder why they call it "raw" honey.

LillyHerself,
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross "It is not pasteurized or filtered" https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/raw-honey-vs-regular

Interesting. I know you can't sell or buy unpasteurised honey or dairy products in Sweden, not sure about the UK.

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@LillyHerself oh interesting, I totally missed that connotation of raw on that label. I assumed it meant no additives, but perhaps unpasteurized too. I assume that's not as risky as raw milk which I wouldn't drink, but I should read more about it.

@ottaross Inspiring!

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@chiasm tasty, but I think those who make muffins in a weekly basis probably get more fancy results. Fresh is nice tho!
