The two greatest challenges facing humanity right now are reversing climate change & halting the spread of fascism.

Digging through some old analogue photos, found this one I took in Santorini in Greece around 1992. This is a view down to the caldera (rim of an old volcano).

Oklahoma’s governor refuses to let kids in his state access the federal government’s new summer EBT program, to ensure that kids can have meals when school is out. In response, five tribal nations have teamed up to provide the benefits to any eligible kids who happen to live on tribal land (which is a lot of Oklahoma). https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/09/us/politics/school-meals-summer-ebt.html?unlocked_article_code=1.jE0.NZAi.mehkrnKm8xuN&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&ugrp=u&sgrp=c-cb

Periodic Public service for all tv/radio journalists: the Higgs boson is pronounced not BOW-zin, but rather BOW-zawn.

Hearing a lot of that today.

LillyHerself,
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross I remember walking behind Prof Higgs in a corridor at Edinburgh Uni once, and noticing, just before I passed him, that he'd put his pullover on inside out, with the label showing at the back. :-)

LillyHerself,
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross It was very endearing. I was also always amazed that he was not bothered by the HUGE portrait painted of him, which hangs in the Informatics building. Possibly the most unattractive piece of art I have ever seen! And HUGE.

Just looking at upcoming total eclipses, and there's an area in the north part of New South Wales Australia that'll see two total eclipses two years apart (2028 & '30). Looks pretty isolated, but a good deal for tourist operators there no doubt. No substantial towns nearby, and arid landscape it appears. Many hours inland from both Brisbane and Sydney.

LillyHerself,
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross If memory serves, that looks like the giant, more or less empty area where the military used to test weapons, some of them nuclear. 😬

LillyHerself,

@ottaross I'm thinking of that Carly Simon song:

"Well, I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Learjet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not
You're with some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you"

Getting close to totality. Waiting to see my first spectator who gets excited and points at the sun, as if others were unsure where the event was happening.

So the morning breakfast done and wandered through Atwater market shops to select bread, local sausage, cheeses, bread and paté and then took metro & walked to the St Lawrence river near Verdun to select a picnic & eclipse viewing spot.

Fun seeing people scouting spots! It's an event!

There is also an element of Volkish ideology here - the assumption that rural white people with certain reactionary sensibilities do, in fact, represent “real America” and therefore command deference - while the groups that make up most of the pluralistic Democratic coalition constitute a deviation.

LillyHerself,
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@Alon @tzimmer_history It's quite common for people on low incomes to have one barely-working car and several non-working cars of the same type (sometimes on their lawn), which they cannibalise for parts to keep the working one running.
It's not very "scenic" and would be classified by most people as trashy.

My modest proposal: Failing water companies should go bankrupt, their investors lose everything, their boards and C-suites be fired, and the gov should buy them for £1 and run them as national utilities. Ditto the railways and privatised energy orgs that price-gouged us last 2 winters. Then every statue of Thatcher & her ideological allies should be melted down and turned into commemorative medals to celebrate the day we free ourselves of the stupidity that saw the nations' utilities and housing stock sold to profiteering wideboys.

LillyHerself,
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@brucelawson The taxpayer will still get stuck paying to catch up on 10 years of no proper maintenance or development.
I wish there was a way to claw back the dividends that were paid, instead of that money being spent on the waterways.

Feels like I'm going to lose this whole day to new networking/backup/NAS issues. A few things snowballing together here I suspect.

There was a silent app change on my NAS () I didn't know about which now is causing probs, simultaneous with a update and a new weird routing issue within my LAN.

Chipping away at it and hoping I'll still get to address an item or two from my to-do list for today.

Very unpleasant looking outside as my morning starts. Not much snow accumulation (a couple of cm?) but slushy looking and howling winds too.

@ottaross For once the weather report was right!
It's not affecting northern Scotland, but I see that also Gothenburg, where I used to live, swung from a balmy +16 to a not-so-balmy +1 and snow, more or less overnight! Brrrr

It's likely that this photo can only really be appreciated on a larger screen, as it's taken in very little light.

Digital photography has an amazing ability to capture colour images in next to no light, and with such rich blacks. Can't help but remember how hard it was to get anywhere near this with old style photography.

I'd love to see others' dark photos too - shall we start a hashtag for it? (dark photos)

Just checking the outlook for Wednesday/Thurs now and I see that system is forecast at about 46cm now!

Lots of at-or-above zero temps though, so maybe it'll melt as it goes along? Depends on the rate tho, and I suspect it'll be pretty intensive if we get that much over that short a period.

LillyHerself,
@LillyHerself@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross It's weird how this coincides with a real warm spell on the continent, with Oslo at 12º and places in Holland at 15º. Here in northern Scotland we had a gloriously sunny day yesterday and today it's around 12º and overcast.
