If you're the team that's banning songs, you're on the wrong team

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

That’s not a universal truth, there are a bunch of neo-nazi anthems and xenophobic songs banned in several countries, and for good reason.

theilleist,

Exceptions prove the rule. Plenty of good rules have the corollary, “unless you’re a nazi.”

mozz, (edited )
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

As far as I know, there is no neo-Nazi song that is illegal in the US. I can buy Mein Kampf, I can sing whatever I want.

Back when Substack wasn't banning Nazis, more than one person told me that that was definitely the right way to do it, and pointed to laws in countries like Germany that prohibited Nazi content as an example of a good approach (sometimes, for some reason, claiming incorrectly that the US had the same laws).

When I said that those laws would invariably classify speech that the ruling party didn't like as "hate speech," they told me I was talking pure nonsense and that they were only classifying actual hate speech, so there was no problem.

Guess which country in the Schengen Area has classified speech against Israel as "hate speech" and prevented a doctor from coming to a university and giving a speech on what he witnessed in Gaza.

The point is not that Nazi songs are okay. The point is that people are going to sing what they want to sing, whether their songs are good things or bad, and that laws telling them they can't is (a) a big waste of time in the big picture (b) a lot more likely to be used against songs that are on the right side of history than the wrong side.

viking, (edited )
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I have no knowledge about songs being banned in the US or not, but I disagree with your assessment of laws being a waste of time. I’m not if favor of a police state whatsoever, but I would consider attending concerts of some right-wing rock bands as a first step towards radicalization.

Hence, preventing those from occurring where possible might keep gullible people out of the influence of radicals, or in the worst case, help keeping tabs on potential future offenders by being able to charge them with something.

mozz,
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

Yeah, I mean, I agree on principle sure. If I was running the music festival I would probably take that attitude sure. The issue with when it becomes the law, is that it's never going to be you or me deciding what might be the first step towards radicalization and what needs to be kept away lest it influence people; it'll always be people who think the Palestine protest songs or Rage Against the Machine are the first step towards radicalization that we really need to be looking out for. So better not to give them the power to shut down the music they think is dangerous.

jsomae, in Always amazing to watch people realizing how they're being brainwashed about China by western propaganda.

China was a third world country a few decades ago. Her thoughts about China are very out of date. Regarding smog, Beijing’s AQI is typically 3 to 4 times London’s, already a pretty smoggy city.

Regarding the street food being clean, there is an illegal practice of using gutter oil; the government has cracked down on it, but it’s still rampant. You could get cancer 20 years later if you choose the wrong vendor.

As for being a progressive country, one of my favourite webcomics was effectively shut down because the author, a lesbian, wanted to include lgbt content such as the leads kissing.

No country is perfect. But, I still have more faith in China than in the U.S.A. You could compare the gutter oil problem to Flint, Michigan; and the U.S. is losing its mind over LGBT people too.

tardigrada, in The Great China Unwind: Foreign Investors Pull $29B Out Of Chinese Equity Markets In 2023 despite the People’s Bank's efforts at making China an attractive opportunity for foreign investment

To provide context to the article: There is a proven dynamic relationship between trade openness, foreign direct investment, and industrial economic growth within economies, and this is true also for China. There is strong evidence for this (for example, see here).

A significant portion of China’s GDP depends on foreign direct investments, and the Gini coefficient, a metric for economic inequity, is 0.45 in China (for comparison, in most European countries it is between 0.3 and 0.35). It is commonly said that any Gini above 0.4 bears a high risk for social unrest.

davel,
@davel@lemmy.ml avatar

GDP is a garbage metric in the first place, and even moreso when you try to apply it to a mixed economy like China’s. GDP considers rent seeking and the real, productive economy to be equivalent. It’s absurd.

If you look at the gross national product accounts of the United States, they depict America is getting richer and richer when people have to pay higher rents. And richer and richer if you own a home and your housing price is inflated. In the national income and product accounts, they say that if a homeowner were to rent out his house to himself, what would he charge for the rent? Well, as rents go up, as if housing prices go up, GDP goes up.

One way to accelerate GDP is to fall behind in your credit card accounts. If you fall behind in your credit card payments, then your interest rates go up from 19% to a penalty rate of 29%. The GDP accounts say that that is providing “financial services,” and GDP goes up.

I’m not familiar enough with Gini to know how much to trust it, so I can’t speak to that. But China’s Gini has dropped from 43.7 in 2010 to 37.1 in 2020. I’m not sure what it is today.

Only the capitalism-brained worry about flat or falling properties values, because they can only think in terms of profits. And that’s why most Americans can no longer afford a house.

they cant afford a house due to a variety of reasons such as minimum wage not being increased, less housing owned by people rather than companies, etc… not because they ‘think in terms of profits’?!? wtf is this rant.

yeah, obviously the us is also commiting genocide. if the us commited a billion genocides, that doesnt change anything about china commiting this one. thats what we call deflection. if trump rapes 26 women and biden rapes 1 woman, bidens actually a stand up guy apparently by deflection logic (not saying biden has or hasnt, no one but him and tara knows that however trump is definitely a serial rapist)

You know who is confused about economics? Most Americans, because neoclassical/neoliberal economics are complete shite.

forced incarceration!!!

  • What country has more incarceration than the US? None by a long shot.
  • Yes, China incarcerated people from terrorist cells that were setting off bombs & fires & assassinations & abductions in Xinjiang. What country wouldn’t?

Yeah, terrorist groups have sometimes been known to form in that manner, or have you forgotten America’s War on Terror?

People were not incarcerated in the millions, not by a loooooong shot. Nor were there millions of terrorists. The CIA/NED can only prop up so many nutjobs. Where are the satellite photos of these prisons holding Gazan-numbers of prisoners? There aren’t any. Has Bell¿ncat been asleep on the job? Anyone can travel there and see for themselves, and talk to the Uyghurs themselves, and see that this is all bullshit.

mutilated genitals just randomly occur then, dumbass

Where’s the evidence of the Chinese government mutilating genitals, dumbass. There isn’t any, and there never will be. There is a history of it in some Muslim groups, however. Note that I’m not saying that any Muslim groups in Xinjiang have a history of it; it’s simply not something I’m knowledgeable of.

@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

what??? china is well-known for having unpopulated cities falling apart and trains that lead to nowhere.

Bartsbigbugbag,

Have you been there? Their high speed trains are the most high technology transportation I’ve ever taken. Imagine getting from Vegas to Denver in 3 hours, in luxury. I’ve only been to one first tier city, and even the lower tier cities are more developed than any in my entire state.

jackpot,
@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

youre cherrypicking their best infrastructure, in their metropolitan areas. in general, averaged out, it’s shit

Bartsbigbugbag,

As I said, I’ve only been to ONE tier 1 city. Most of my time was spent in poorer, less developed regions. Even with that caveat, every city(specifically city, not village or town) I went to was more developed than my own states cities. Even the rural areas had train routes directly through town and hospitals within 15m at most.

There’s poor areas definitely, but, it’s not 2000 anymore.

jackpot,
@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

As I said, I’ve only been to ONE tier 1 city

yeah yeah i know and thanks for the clarity but one train in one city just isnt a good metric yk.

Even with that caveat, every city(specifically city, not village or town) I went to was more developed than my own states cities.

the states are notoriously in bed with the car industry. try europe instead.

There’s poor areas definitely, but, it’s not 2000 anymore.

warning (this is a rant):

it’s nice to see the development but chinas expectations have become delusional, having that sort of constant rapid expansion never lasts for any society and now that their whole ‘cheap labour with lots of factories’ dynamic is eroding due to economic and competitive shifts, im curious where theyll go. its birth rate is horrifically low and china is doing jackshit to convince couples to have kids, the work hours are only ‘regulated’ in paper and never enforced beyond propaganda leading to multiple counter movementa. im very curious about where china will go. also with taiwan, a bursting housing market, tech sanctions, covid damage. in short, it doesnt look good for china and all it would take is one solid 4 year US administration (thats a big ask in fairness, if both contenders die maybe lmfao) to leave them in the dust.
