How did you get started with dancing?
Personally, I had never so much as imagined that I would ever dance before I entered university as an undergraduate student. However, my second semester in my American university, one of my friends invited me to join a waltz class at the university-affiliated ballroom dance club.
I hesitantly joined, but was immediately hooked. I was quickly recruited to participate in an upcoming event hosted by the club in a division that pairs absolute beginners with more experienced (though still amateur collegiate) dancers, to dance a single style. I think I did American Rhythm Cha-Cha.
Eventually, I joined the competitive team, went to (and won! — as a team, not individually) nationals, and ballroom dance became my pastime of choice.
I have since specialized in international standard ballroom dance. I say "specialized," but I really mean "my life is too busy to allow me to dedicate sufficient additional time to dancing to be proficient in more styles."
I have since moved to Japan and have continued competing.
