@emmaaum We have a lot of folk dances in Italy. Salterello is from the central regions, then in the South there's pizzica and tarantella.
I'd really love to go see this festival once in my lifetime.

She made a conscious effort to smile on the inside, to school her thoughts in such a way that she was neither muttering hostilities nor trembling with fear.

And the odd thing -- or maybe it wasn't so odd! -- was that when she smiled inside she stood taller, walked with an easy grace, looked at the world with open, clear eyes, and . . . smiled on the outside as well.

It was easy, too easy. to carry about bitterness and anger, resentment and fear within her -- there was so much to be angry and bitter about.

But she felt in her heart, sensed it in her steps that these emotions caused her to be clumsy, awkward, unable to stand and move with strength.

The grace and freedom she sought did not live in hatred.

Kumina, an Afro-Jamaican religion based on communication with the ancestors, has Congolese origins and was brought to Jamaica by indentured Africans in the 1840s-1860s. The ritual dance, along with drumming that summons and controls the spirits, “seems to be the bridge between esoteric and the exotic...” (Olive Lewin, “Jamaica’s Folk Music”)

Twenty-four more hours until my freestyle showcase, in which I have to perform:

• Argentine tango
• country/western swing
• foxtrot
• nightclub two-step
• rumba
• tango
• waltz
• West Coast swing

I’m so doomed.

mjgardner,
@mjgardner@social.sdf.org avatar

@swaggboi Thanks for not telling me to “break a leg” 😉

I played in a rock band for seven years. I’ve been taking dance classes for two. I still get stage fright.

But it’s an energy I can use to propel me into un-self-consciousness. Then I feel free to take creative risks and win big.

I overthink like hell both before and after. But during the performance I flow with the music.

Such a perfect place, perfect time for a spontaneous, extemporaneous dance on the beach.

The folds of fabric were just calling out to be unfurled in a flowing ripple of light, color and glow.

The last light of the sun cast its golden rays across the glistening surface of the sand, and there was no orchestra but the surf.

There was youth, and joy, and innocence.

Argentine Tango - a thread.

.. about the dance, the music, the culture around it, and a bit of history too.

(caveat - i'm no expert, just an enthusiast)

Let's start with a fun taster - a dance to one of the 3 main genres of music within tango culture - the milonga - we'll talk more about it later.

Enjoy it - but if you do want to watch more carefully, notice the most important element of tango - connection!

The first thing to say about is that it is danced by ordinary people - not trained dancers.

It is something we do socially.

Something we look forward to once (or more!) a week - like many people go to the pub at the end of the week.

This famous film "Tango, Baile Nuestro" (1982) interviews ordinary working people.

That transformation from the working week's clothes to dressing up more formally is a thing we enjoy and respect.

Behaviour in a milonga conforms to fairly strict rules when compared to most dance settings.

It is an environment which is more sober and thoughtful = tango, than jolly and extrovertly energetic = salsa.

Some of us prefer our evenings to be like this. I do.

The well-known "passion" of is strengthened by the constraints of fairly formal behaviour and the rules of the dance floor.

Here is Piazzolla's Oblivion - to set the right mood.

johnl, (edited )
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

I wouldn't say I was a fan of dance but then I saw this video the other day and was mesmerised. So I guess I do like dance and it just depends on the dance. And you know, maybe the editing and the music and the wardrobe etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REPPgPcw4hk&list=RDREPPgPcw4hk

I do love the wardrobe. How does one go about dressing like that? It would be quite a move for me from grey pants and black hoodies. And I guess I'd have to learn to iron?
