I’m on an energy saving kick.
So far this month between the hours of midnight and 8am we are averaging 1.2kWh per hour of use.
I can only account for a max of 400Wh/hr and even that is a high estimate.

No ac on. All computers shutdown.
The only thing running is about 200w of network gear, refrigerator and freezer. And some phone chargers.

Something is drawing power that shouldn’t be 🧐

Got power monitoring in Home Assistant, hopefully i can track down the energy vampires.

maleandroids,

@notsle I'm envious! I'd love to have a setup like that! 💙🙌

@notsle@kzoo.to avatar

@maleandroids I went with a Emporia Vue2 then flashed it with ESPHome. You got to do a bit of soldering and have a serial tty device. But wasn’t terrible.

@notsle I can't exist without AC. I'm extremely heat sensitive. :yahoosweating:

@notsle@kzoo.to avatar

@elleybirdy my wife disagrees with me. But I don’t think it’s been hot enough for AC yet 🤷‍♂️🤣

@notsle

And a pretty significant amount.... too.

That's more than "a vampire load"...

Have you checked for outside extension cords to neighbors?

Can you flip breaker on outside sockets overnight - maybe someone is hooking up their EV...?

🤔

@notsle I love this. I've been doing some investigating of my own. I'm measuring the fridges, network gear, desktops (mine and husband's with all our electronics) and have an estimate of the lights, but I still have about 400W of unaccounted usage overnight

notsle,
@notsle@kzoo.to avatar

@motoridersd doing the same, I have 4 smart plugs with Usage meters connected to home assistant, i have 4 more coming today.

But yes, @JohnJBurnsIII gonna start turning off breakers.

Right now im doing a full breaker mapping to ensure i know what all breakers go to, This house was built in the 70's and has not had a electrical upgrade. so its kind of a mess

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@notsle @motoridersd

I get the electrical mess... 1918 house - w/remodel in early 80's. I don't think the electrical was via actual electrician.

I've changed all sockets out over time and they all had old-style metal crimps around wires and they were all loose. 🤯

If you have a sump pump - is it running all of the time? Probably would burn out or throw a breaker by itself.

Our panel map had 2 or 3 handwriting of circuits. I collected info and put it all in spreadsheet and taped to panel.

motoridersd,
@motoridersd@pug.ninja avatar

@JohnJBurnsIII @notsle Our house was built in 1950, the electrical has been decently upgraded, but most of the house has no neutral wires for example.

I have an Emporia Vue that I need to install on my main panel and start monitoring circuits.

And I was wrong, my unaccounted power is more like 100W. Overnight, it's around 0.11 kWh.

The higher usage of unaccounted power are things like the Dishwasher, Convection Oven, Coffee Maker, and other lights.

@motoridersd @notsle

WOW - something is happening at 1am... that's a lot of pink.

Do you have any overnight local to cloud backups happening that kick off at that point? That still seems like not enough load to create that spike...

It will be interesting to know the cause...

motoridersd,
@motoridersd@pug.ninja avatar

@JohnJBurnsIII @notsle the blue spike? That's the hot tub heating the water when the Super Off Peak rate starts at midnight :)

The 1 PM spike is probably the electric convection oven which I don't have on a measured circuit.

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@motoridersd @notsle

HA... got the AM & PM confused... I thought it was AM overnight... :)

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@motoridersd @notsle

No neutrals. Interesting. So hot and grounds only. They must have just replace wiring from a knob & tube system - and not gone to 3-wire.

Unfortunately - good electrical revamp is not a small task (time & $$).

motoridersd,
@motoridersd@pug.ninja avatar

@JohnJBurnsIII @notsle yeah, and with no attic or basement/crawl space, redoing electrical would require tearing out all drywall and that's just not worth it lol

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@motoridersd @notsle

Oh ugh.

I looked at the Vue - and it appears to be DIY possible. Was that your plan - or were you going to get electrician in?

motoridersd,
@motoridersd@pug.ninja avatar

@JohnJBurnsIII @notsle It's definitely DIY, especially since I don't plan on putting the clamps on the service wires (I already have a Solar system that is measuring this).

I installed it on my office subpanel to test it, just haven't tried it on the main panel. Had to order some extra clamps.

I flashed mine with ESPHome, so it doesn't depend on the Emporia cloud

@motoridersd @JohnJBurnsIII Mine is scary 🫣😬☠️👻

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@notsle @motoridersd

Reminds me of some network & pbx closets in the 90's...

I've hesitated at opening mine...

notsle,
@notsle@kzoo.to avatar

@motoridersd @JohnJBurnsIII

Im looking at a Emporia too.

I shut off all breakers except my network gear. (which i did isolate on its own breaker)

I know this isnt the right way to use this and it should only be on one wire. but before the meter, on the wire to the utility pole. Im reading .4 amps
After the meter to my house its only reading .2 amps

so maybe the meter is reading wrong.

If i had a better in home monitor i would know more, I'll get there

@notsle@kzoo.to avatar

@motoridersd decided to order one. I can flash it with esphome so I don’t need to use their cloud service too 🤘
