Jews from Arab lands are the missing piece of the Israeli-Palestinian discourse by American Syrian Jew Lisa Sayegh May 7, 2024

"...Over the past years, I have often been frustrated when I find people do not understand the trauma of the 700,000 Jews from all over the Middle East who were violently expelled from their countries in 1948 and how it resonates today. Pro-Palestinian activists who call out Israel as a “European settler colonial project” omit a critical part of the story that calls into question their claim. They ignore the Mizrahi majority in Israel who are descendants of Jews expelled from Arab lands when Israel was declared a state..."

My Persian college roommate said that his family could trace their roots ~1,900 years back in Iran, until relatively contemporary expulsion. I couldn't believe it, but he showed me a remarkably detailed family tree (yes, with omissions). Heard him comparing notes with another Iranian Jew during Minyan recently — similar story!

I had no idea. Ignorance by others probably should be no surprise. https://www.worldjewishcongress.org/en/news/the-expulsion-of-jews-from-arab-countries-and-iran--an-untold-history

The problem isn't never having know, because we can all learn new things. The problem is learning the truth but clinging to the lies and propaganda.

@RunRichRun @shekinahcancook My Tibetan Buddhist friend told me he can trace his family tree back ~5,000 years! If you ever get a chance in NYC, I recommend a visit to the Metropolitan Museum Of Art's Middle Eastern wing. Really blew my mind - a magnificent collection.

this article is dishonest in lots of ways just glancing at it. Mizrahi Jews didn't "come" to Israel, they were stripped of their possessions and expelled from the Muslim nations and sent there with little more than what they could carry. I'm including my own not too distant ancestor in that assessment.

While it's true there have been issues with Ashkenazi leadership, there is absolutely no majority of MENA Jews who aren't zionists. Any impression otherwise is simply false.

So this article is bunk from the get go.
