Jews from Arab lands are the missing piece of the Israeli-Palestinian discourse by American Syrian Jew Lisa Sayegh May 7, 2024

"...Over the past years, I have often been frustrated when I find people do not understand the trauma of the 700,000 Jews from all over the Middle East who were violently expelled from their countries in 1948 and how it resonates today. Pro-Palestinian activists who call out Israel as a “European settler colonial project” omit a critical part of the story that calls into question their claim. They ignore the Mizrahi majority in Israel who are descendants of Jews expelled from Arab lands when Israel was declared a state..."

    @cjerrington I appreciate what you're saying here. I actually faced the identical problem yesterday of figuring out how to get nvim 0.9+ on my debian machine so I could try out some of the custom configs (I went the AppImage route, which seems to be working). At the same time, installing a custom nvim config is a fairly advanced task, no? At least not something the "average end-user" would be doing, I'd think. I'm a non-programmer myself, but I've embraced the "fun" of figuring linux stuff out.

    What's the possessive of Alzheimer's?

    I just tried to formulate the following sentence: "I recall reading about some research that seemed to find that problems in sleep architecture proceeded onset of Alzheimer's (other) symptoms by up to two decades".

    This is driving me slightly nuts. I mean, technically, if English were sensible and consistent, in the above sentence it should be "Alzheimer's's".

    drhoopoe,
    @drhoopoe@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @siderea I guess technically it'd be Alzheimer's Disease's symptoms, since that's the full name of the condition.

    Flying! Stinging! Ovipositing! Bright warning colors!

    Ants looked at the main advantages of being hymenopteran and said... nah. I guess stinging is OK... (Though most ants don't sting.) ... but most of this is nothing compared to going eusocial.

    Personally I think eusociality is such a huge advantage this makes sense.

    Currently writing an article that should be 8,000 words. I am now at 17,000 and I, as a beginner in professional academic writing, need some advice. I know I am the kind of person who thinks through writing. This means that I have probably written a lot that can be cut and left out.

    But how do I learn to write reasonably lengthy papers? I swear I thought my topic and questions could be addressed in 8,000 words. I had an outline ... with word counts per section. Still, it went completely off the rails.

    Will this get better at some point?

    @academicchatter @phdlife @phdstudents

    @drhoopoe@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @natalie @academicchatter @phdlife @phdstudents I also tend to think through writing, and I routinely write 2-3X the word limit and then edit things down to size. It's not ideal, certainly, but I don't anticipate developing new habits at this stage in my career. The good news is that, if you save all the 'extra' material you can often repurpose it for other projects.

    @oblomov There's a common misconception that anarchists are allergic to organization generally, which is quite the opposite of the truth. Anarchism is all about organizing, but doing so non-coercively, i.e. wthout relying on state violence. That in no way excludes the possibility of coordinated international efforts (which I guess is what you mean by "superstructures:). IMO such efforts would be all the more effective and enduring for not relying on state violence.
