In the last week, apart from following the usual roadmap, I added a new, unplanned theme, logotype, and icons to /kbin. What you see in the attached image is just the beginning. I've been navigating in a bit of a fog until now, but I have a clear goal in mind that I'll be striving for. If you want to track the changes, follow the grumpyDev profile - they're the one performing all the magic.

There's also a new version of the BetterKbin browser extension, which makes using the /kbin easier - @FediExt.

It might have been the most important week since the very beginning. I believe that well-designed and well-thought-out UI/UX is incredibly important for projects like this. And when you see someone dedicating their time to make the project better, it's an amazing motivation.

Very interesting. What about customization - is there an Admin panel? Scaling - total number of users supported, posts etc etc? The repo also says, Elasticsearch is (deprecated).

@Deus The admin panel is currently very basic. It includes essential instance settings such as the ability to enable federation, captcha, registration, and so on, along with some statistics and a user list.

There is also a magazine panel where everyone can manage their own community. Further development of the admin panel is outlined in the roadmap: https://kbin.social/m/fediverse/t/511/Kbin-Roadmap-2023

I'm transitioning from Elasticsearch to either Postgres full-text search or Meilisearch - I'm currently comparing these two solutions.

Thanks a lot for the answers. Just two more queries.

  1. I looked at the other instances and I noticed they all had the same favicon. Are you planning to go the Mastodon way? “You can have favicon but only the kbin favicon?” In essence, the kbin branding has to stay?
  2. The front page (or magazines) seem to be sorted chronologically. Am I correct? Are there any plans to use a sorting algorithm? E.g. Wilson score confidence interval? Based on time decay, user karma, and so on?

@Deus Absolutely not, I want each instance to be different and have its unique character. Currently, every admin can replace the file with their own icon/logo. Soon, it will be possible to do it through the admin panel. Additionally, there is an option to customize the appearance by adding your own theme.scss, and ultimately, I want kbin to be a modular platform, so each instance can look different and not even resemble what is on kbin.social.

/kbin is being created for people to use according to their own needs and preferences. I take care of building the brand on my two instances.

In the default "hot" sorting, several factors are taken into account, such as time, number of comments, number of boosts, and likes. However, I am not a proponent of user karma (except for obvious anti-spam measures), but rather a community where everyone can express themselves on the same terms. The platform itself can be horizontally scaled if someone has the appropriate technical knowledge, but in this development phase, I will primarily focus on minimizing the workload for admins of smaller instances.

I am not a proponent of user karma

True. No one wants to go through the ruckus of Power Users or Scamfluencers again.
