As much as I love the idea of the @framework laptop, and as much as I want one, I just can't seem to justify it over my current Lenovo T480. Other than a faster/newer processor, I'm not sure that I'd truly get any benefit at this point in time. :sadness:

bolapara,

I went from a T480 to an 11th gen Framework and while I appreciate the upgradable design and better portability, honestly, I could have easily continued to use that Thinkpad as my main machine. If you don’t need the upgrade, save your money and drive that T480 into the ground. It’s a fantastic machine, as is the Framework.

@bolapara yeah, I plan to use this thing all up. I had one before and sold it at the height of the pandemic. Picked up another cheap with Thunderbolt issues, fixed it and trucking solid with it. It just has so much expandability.

helenslunch,

Yeah if you don’t need the power (they really only sell high end components) it makes much more sense to keep using yours or even to pick up a used one.

Brkdncr,

Lenovo t-series is pretty good.

bitwolf,

The nice thing is that they’re established. When your t480 breaks you have a reasonable option (I don’t believe the newer Lenovos have the same spirit).

@bitwolf This is correct- the newer Lenovos are not in the same class as the older T480. It would definitely be a thing for when/if this T480 breaks. Currently, with dual SSDs and 64GB of RAM, it's just a tough sell. If I decided to pull the wifi card, I could throw in my Coral.ai TPU. Parts have been just as swappable, really- upgraded trackpad and display thus far. I've also got a TON of ports, and I really have used them all.

I just wanted a reason to buy a Framework 13 NOW.

fayoh,

Can confirm, while it does work my T495 has been a disappointment in so many ways.

If it hadn’t been called a ThinkPad I probably would have bothered much less, but that name brought some expectations.

Jumuta,

when the t480 breaks you could get a t420

bloodfart,

Ayy what kind of cooling would a person willing to give up their wireless card need to put on that little sucker?

kancept,
@kancept@mastodon.social avatar

@bloodfart it doesn’t need anything. Runs great without any cooling. It’s currently in my ThinkCentre m900 tiny in place of WiFi there. I’ve had it in my T480 without issue prior to me getting the m900. I wish it’d fit in the cellular/nvme slot, but it’s a different connector.

bloodfart,

Sick. Now I just gotta learn tensorflow lite.

Nice beos av. Been a while.

@bloodfart yeah, it’s all Python, and I’m not a fan of Python. It’s also older libraries so you have to make sure you’re running in a pythonenv. OR do like me and use it for Frigate with Home Assistant for camera object detection.

fidodo,

The main feature of the framework laptop is that it’s more maintainable and and sustainable. If your current laptop is fine then neither of those matter and using your current laptop is the most sustainable option.
