Hardware companies love AI because it means more sales of "faster and more powerful" hardware, which means more money for them.

Software companies love AI because it means you'll buy the new version, or re-up your subscription...

@rasterweb The AI I run is all local. There is nothing sent to the internet at all. I’m sure companies may find a way to monetize their types, but for now, local installs are truly that, as they are just the model aspect of the whole picture. There are a few other moving parts. I’m also running mine on an 8th gen Intel and no dedicated GPU. 😅

kancept,
@kancept@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb yes, that I agree with. My AI is local and I chose to install it. Not forced in as part of a product with telemetry to train on my data. That’s why I razed my Reddit profile years ago and never contributed to StackOverflow. I don’t need AI trained on my garbage. Now, I don’t disagree with AI training as a whole, it’s the charging for access to what is contributed as open in the first place. It’s beyond providing a public service like a library.

Some good news, it’s 6 months to the election and in our rural-suburban interface area in Arizona there’s not a single Trump flag on any of the hundreds of houses I can see (we’re on a hill).

And yes, I can check because I'm a creeper with access to several telescopes.

kancept,
@kancept@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs unfortunately, in my hellhole Idaho location, I’m surrounded by the idiots and their flags.

kancept,

@thomasfuchs given that most of them don’t care for the rules and do mostly what they want, it tracks. I think the strangest this is that most of them have young daughters. Make it make sense.

kancept, to framework
@kancept@mastodon.social avatar

As much as I love the idea of the @framework laptop, and as much as I want one, I just can't seem to justify it over my current Lenovo T480. Other than a faster/newer processor, I'm not sure that I'd truly get any benefit at this point in time. :sadness:

kancept,
@kancept@mastodon.social avatar

@bitwolf This is correct- the newer Lenovos are not in the same class as the older T480. It would definitely be a thing for when/if this T480 breaks. Currently, with dual SSDs and 64GB of RAM, it's just a tough sell. If I decided to pull the wifi card, I could throw in my Coral.ai TPU. Parts have been just as swappable, really- upgraded trackpad and display thus far. I've also got a TON of ports, and I really have used them all.

I just wanted a reason to buy a Framework 13 NOW.

@bolapara yeah, I plan to use this thing all up. I had one before and sold it at the height of the pandemic. Picked up another cheap with Thunderbolt issues, fixed it and trucking solid with it. It just has so much expandability.

kancept,
@kancept@mastodon.social avatar

@bloodfart it doesn’t need anything. Runs great without any cooling. It’s currently in my ThinkCentre m900 tiny in place of WiFi there. I’ve had it in my T480 without issue prior to me getting the m900. I wish it’d fit in the cellular/nvme slot, but it’s a different connector.

@bloodfart yeah, it’s all Python, and I’m not a fan of Python. It’s also older libraries so you have to make sure you’re running in a pythonenv. OR do like me and use it for Frigate with Home Assistant for camera object detection.

There was a time when I used to code graphics drivers. I used to love . Nowadays, I can't code my way out of a paper bag. Its been so many years and I'm just a jockey these days. I've been trying to learn , and while I get the basics, it just doesn't seem to gel in my head to make an app. I want to like Go, but I feel I gotta get something down like python to get to that (and to do some projects I want to do). The goal is to learn , but man, I'm dying here!

kancept,

@Migueldeicaza It’s still a place that’s in my daily reading. I don’t comment there these days, esp since my account has been “lost” a few times now and I’m tired of bothering. It’d be served fine as a feed in RSS if I bothered.

If this doesn’t go the way I am hoping I will probably nuke my system, lose the , and go with a new distro.

We’ll see. Hopefully it works. @thelinuxcast pray for me

@elementary is the new Dock background customizable as in we can keep the current half-height background? I like both (and the new animation is sweet), but was just curious.

Docusign just admitted that they use customer data (i.e., all those contracts, affidavits, and other confidential documents we send them) to train AI:

https://support.docusign.com/s/document-item?language=en_US&bundleId=fzd1707173174972&topicId=uss1707173279973.html

They state that customers "contractually consent" to such use, but good luck finding it in their Terms of Service. There also doesn't appear to be a way to withdraw consent, but I may have missed that.

Who is everybody using for NS services these days? I got grandfathered into ZoneEdit’s free tier almost two decades ago, and have not had a need to change it since. But now I need an automated LE cert via ACME.sh and ZoneEdit is not supported. I have heard horror stories about CloudFare what else is out there?

kancept, (edited )
@kancept@mastodon.social avatar

@spacerog I moved to DeSec a few months back for my and have been super happy. With API access, it also allows me to update my dynamic IP.

Updating to add I moved to them as GoDaddy (I know, I know) doesn't properly support LE, whereas it is native to DeSec.

It's both weird and sad to me that some of the easiest phones to degoogle are Google branded phones. Why aren't more mobiles just plain open?! I’ve been saying the New York
Times is a right wing newspaper for years, but here you can hear it out of the (Nazi) horses’ mouth:

NYT publisher A. G. Sulzberger: “So our job is to help give the staff confidence to do those stories that explore unpopular positions and wade into controversial areas that challenge conventional wisdom."

(Don’t give them a single click ever.)

@thomasfuchs If you have to read a NYT article, copy th URL and paste it into this. It'll pull up a snapshot of the article. It'll give NYT no more clicks or page views and you can read the damn article.

@box464@mastodon.social avatar

As of this morning, ProxMox has been installed after a few hiccups with a static IP mismatch. Belgarath is spinning.

The good news - I can now complete the install and post-install steps in my sleep.

Next up - a backup plan, and learning about templates.

What to install first? I hear pfSense and Portainer often.

kancept,
@kancept@mastodon.social avatar

@box464 for sure! So far I'm liking it. It's just an abstraction layer over docker, but it's nice. I'm getting ready to also install Homepage and see how that is compared to CasaOS. It's a little more Yaml config, but it does have widgets to get data from things like ProxMox and PiHole.

Enjoy and keep posting about the journey! I'm trying to and meeting some great people along the way.
