I have a permanent branch that's never going to be merged into main. Is there any way to get GitHub to stop asking me if I want to merge it whenever I push new commits to it? I want this to go away for specific branches (I'll also accept it going away for all branches, because I mostly don't care about this).

Maybe you could create a new orphan branch from it and use that new branch?

@MisterMagoo Neither branch is an orphan though. They share the same history and should be able to trace it as such.

@bradwilson I suppose a fork's out of the question?

@stevefenton I actually want it all in the same repo. It all belongs together. It's two versions of the same project (vCurrent and vNext) that have irretrievably changed because of major architectural overhauls.

@bradwilson You could...Create a new repo, delete the local git folder and push it to the new repo. Then delete the branch from the og repo. Lots of work but...that will work.

@billseipel But then I force contributors who want to work on that branch to go find a separate project...

@bradwilson Yep. Pick your poison.

@billseipel It's really not a choice. I put up with the yellow banner until I can convince someone at GitHub to pick up this as a feature. 😄 It inconveniences me vs. a fork/new repo which inconveniences everybody else.
